As a pianist, I attended two of his Summer Music Camps at the University of Redlands, CA., in '70 & '71. I had the privilege of meeting Stan both times. He took the time to give me some pointers on the keyboard. What I remember most were his hands; they were huge, like a baseball glove, whereas mine were half his size. At the end of both camps, his orchestra took the stage for a concert. A relatively small band, but they were so perfectly in tune with each other they practically blew out the walls of the auditorium. R.I.P. Stan.

I was a doctoral student at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah during the summer of 1972 and Kenton brought THIS same orchestra ( same personnel ) to BYU for one of his famous ''Summer Workshops''. Each afternoon a fellow student & I would take our 2 oldest sons to watch & listen to the Kenton orchestra practice. Then at the end of the summer - August 1972 - Kenton's orchestra did a ''live recorded concert'' at the BYU Music Dept. auditorium. That concert that I attended with my wife & 2 sons resulted in the album - "Stan Kenton at Brigham Young University - 1972'' That album is one of my ALL TIME favorite 33 r.p.m. albums in my collection. Two years later - 1974 - we saw Kenton perform live in Ventura, California at the Ventura Community College Auditorium.

I saw Kenton at a danceland in 1954 and nobody would dance......we just stood there gathered around the stage in awe. He kept saying....dance, dance, but no we were mesmerized. I adored him. Still do.

I could never figure it out. Stan Kenton and his band toured the world, played in places like the Hollywood Bowl, and Carnegie Hall, played for Presidents and royalty. Yet every spring, he and his band would play a concert in the tiny auditorium at Springdale High School, just outside of Pittsburgh. I'm glad they did.
When I was in high school, our band director would take the members of the Jazz Band to watch them play. Even in the 1970's, their sound was awesome, and they put on a great show.

I saw THIS band in 1971 as a college freshman. It was a jazz seminar at Indianola College featuring only the Kenton band. Stan introduced Willie Maiden who would give a short talk. Willie shuffled to the microphone..... paused....... paused some more....... and finally spoke one word.... "TIME." Of course, he explained how important it was. I thought it was quite profound and remember it as though it were yesterday! Later, I spotted their bass player eating dinner alone, so I asked him if I could join him. He told me that he had been driving a bus in Denver, when he got a call to play with Stan. That really surprised me! I was a trumpet player and sometimes used the Mike Vax mouthpiece.
