Given the circumstances, Zach was the winner here. From the footage it seems all Nehemiah did was sharpen the blade while his master did the work and still went with a broken handle. So... the video shows apprentice Nehemiah mostly standing around with hands in his pockets, while Frank, the master, made the weapon. So this competition was Frank vs Zack... master vs apprentice. Pretty sure I wouldn't be too proud, as a master, to beat an apprentice.
As a master, your job is to encourage growth in your apprentice, not have them stand by as you win $10k in a contest against a far less experienced opponent. There's no honor in it.
In this instance, If I were Frank, knowing dang well that Zack's master was gone, I'd have stood back and let Nehemiah do the job, without any interference at all. Then, regardless of the outcome, I'd have been proud of both students, and commended both for their excellent work.

he was on his own and his weapon technically received no damage (no chipping of the blade, just a minor roll).
while the other weapon clearly was falling apart *and* it was a master/apprentice vs just an apprentice after the other master blacksmith had to leave for personal reasons.
now, if you were to repair both weapons, which one do you think would take longer to repair ?

For only a single roll, turning in a heavy weapon, and having a slight cutting issue, he did outstandingly. Unfortunately, sometimes that's just how it goes. @Lucas Carlson no they dont. It's illegal to make a weapon on tv in NY unless it's a prop. They hang the winners up on a wall in a special room.

Zacks weapon is actually better. I highly doubt a light axe with without curve will go through any kind of armour. Plus that straighter blade helped it cut better through the rope and piece of meat. That test was mostly determined by design and human actions.
