HOW TO BOND RABBITS | Bonding my all male trio

  • In this video, I'm going to show you how to bond rabbits! I have an all male trio of lop rabbits. They have currently moved back a step from being completely free roamed, to being contained in a play pen (just for bonding purposes). Once they stop any aggressive behaviour for a few days, they're going to be enjoying a free roamed life as a trio :3
I briefly go through the steps of bonding rabbits, some common bonding mistakes and misconceptions as well as things I've learnt from my bonding process which will hopefully be helpful to you too! Stay tuned for updates on the buns and their upcoming bonding progress.

No that’s a misunderstanding! They are using their excess energy to practice high jumps and rapid changes in direction, but that’s an instinct they have from wild rabbits, since domesticated rabbits are the same species as European wild rabbits. They practice to be ready for running from predators and defending their territory from intruding new rabbits.
These jumps can be a sign of stress if they are attacked, cornered or chased, but it can just be “practice” also when they have extra energy!

Thank you so much! I'm taking in a second male bunny to bond with my first male bunny tomorrow, and a lot of the sources online have just been saying that 2 male bunnies won't work out. This video really gave me hope. I'll try not to be discouraged if the bonding takes some time, as seeing all the work you've put in and the bond your boys have now is really inspiring.

I got two young females (no relatives) and they got along very well at the beginning. But when they became adults (and became more hormonal), they just started fighting REALLY badly and got very serious injuries from each other. The vet gave us the advice to spay them, so we did. About two weeks after the operation, we put them back together but they were still fighting so bad and didn't get along (I think the hormones were still high because not enough times had passed after the spaying). Some months later, I re-bonded the two females (it was just a few weeks ago), and I did it on a neutral territory, which worked pretty well. I just put them into a room without a border between them because I had the feeling that they just became more aggressive when they only saw each other but couldn't "fight it out". Sooo at the beginning they were fighting again (with breaks where they would just lay around somewhere) and it was still really tense (and as they're lops they also hurt their ears again, but nothing serious so we didn't intervene). But after a few hours they started kinda liking each other again and now they're like best friends (thank god)! So don't give up, it can take some time and effort, but it's totally worth it! :)

Castration / Sterilisation is also incredibly important for successful bonding between bunnies. It lessen their hormones, leading to an decrease in hormonal behaviour, such as destruction, aggression, mounting ect. giving them a much better opportunity to live together peacefully. There is also a lot of health reasons to get your bunny fixed, there is a huge decrease in cancer, especially in the reproductive system and for females. Fixed bunnies also often live longer. It is very important to chose a well qualified doctor, here in Denmark only very few vets are properly educated on rabbits and know how to perform both the surgery and proper aftercare. I feel that this should definitely have been mentioned.

I hate when people who have education and real knowledge is when they tell people to stress bond meaning; shove them in very small areas like a pet carrier and magically no fighting will happen. Obviously that's not the case, spaces like that can be deadly for them if they do not get along, smaller areas together doesn't mean they will bond. You want a neutral based area as you said, a decent size to start then gradually increase their areas together. This video was definitely helpful girl!

Would you recommend that I start the process of bonding immediately as in day 1 of bringing the new bunny home or should l need to give the new buck time to settle in his new environment first?
I've already tried putting them together in a carrier and there's no aggressiveness between the two. I've also put them in a small enclosure but nobody wants to be the alpha bunny - they're both very calm and submissive. I've put them together for atleast 25 mins - 30 mins with no humping.

Before they got spayed one of them was circling, humping, peeing, & RIPPING the other bunnies fur out. My family was really worried so we got them spayed. When they went back together the one bunny was still attacking. Thankfully she was only circling & no longer biting, humping, or peeing. We decided to separate her from the other 2 because they were gonna get seriously hurt. We currently are trying to bond them back together but it’s taking forever & doesn’t seem to be working. Hey! I can only advise you as best I can from the information you have given me, definitely ask a local rabbit savvy vet what to do. The only tips I can give you is if possible have a pet gate separating them so they can still see and smell each other and interact while you're not around. Make sure they can't get to each other though! The only other thing I can recommend trying is bonding them all in pairs first. Bond the first bunny with the second, the first with the third etc. Don't be discouraged if it takes forever, just make sure you're keeping a close eye on them. Don't allow any fighting ever.
This channel has the best tips for bonding. Feel free to ask her what to do as well. xx

introduce them again! get some oven mitts on just in case they start to nip each other and you have to break it up. when you introduce them, make sure the area they’re in is very small. this makes it so they have to tolerate each other because they’re going to be so close together. it sounds bad, but you only have to do it for a few days to a week, gradually increase space over time it will be worth it! my bun and her sister came to me as a bonded pair as they were born in the same litter and a couple months after i got them her sister died unexpectedly, and i’m finally getting her two more sisters. she’s getting spayed on monday whoop whoop! i’m so nervous to bond them but i really think it will help her!

unfortunately the same happened with my bunnies! i even had to get surgery for the smaller one.. i seperated them after the incident and neutered both, but even after endless tries they never got friendly again... also the smaller seemed extremely lonely but i didnt have the space for another bunny. luckily a very good friend of mine adopted the smaller one and found a girlfriend for him and they are inseperable and happy. i kept the bigger brother and he is absolutely happy with me (i work from home so he is never really alone) and has no interest in other bunnies (i tried haha) i really hope time and many tries will help your boys to bond again !!!

However, I have my own bun now (male too) and I've learnt a lot more about rabbits and neutering and i'm really unsure on whether or not to neuter him. I’m commenting this on multiple bunny videos. I hope someone sees this and can help. I have two female buns. One is a year old and one is 3. They are both lops and are both spayed. When I brought home the 1 year old she was 5months. They both got along great, would groom eachother and play. Neither of them were spayed at this time. But once we got the youngest spayed she started to get aggressive which we thought was odd. She started biting and nipping our other bun. So we separated them. Then I thought that getting my other bun spayed would help. But nope. It’s been 6months and I’ve tried everything!! Stress bonding, a neutral territory, giving them each others litter boxes, having them spend time in the other ones territory. Everything. As soon as they see each other their tails go up and they want to bite. Absolutely no hesitation they just want each other dead I swear! I’m not sure they can even be bonded! But they used to be so cute running around together and I want them to do that again. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know how it went, but it's really difficult to form same-sex pairs in bunnies. Female can be extremely territorial and will try to kill each others in some cases. My thought is that your younger female went through puberty and try to assert dominance, this enhanced by the fact that she was recovering from surgery and therefore felt threatened by the other. How did it go ? Still, I hope they settled.

have you tried bonding just one at a time? I'd say pick the less aggressive one and do a few bonding sessions with the new girl and if you see progress, you can slowly introduce the third rabbit

    • @Kevin-vl6bh
      @Kevin-vl6bh Pƙed 3 lety +1

Try seperating the pair and the girl for two weeks so they cant smell or See eachother.
That way they loose their aggression for eachother. Then put all three together at the Same time in a room or Place none of the bunnies have been in before. Do NOT seperate them(also not at Night),bunnies fight which is totally normal. Only seperate them when they are biting the other so hard they bleed. If they loose hair thats also normal and Not Bad. Just let them fight they NEED to settle their ranking.
Also its important That they have MUCH room, only That way three rabbits will be okay with eachother.
Trust me with this! I have 4 bunnies myself and That way it has worked the best. Good luck!

I'm actually about to bond a male and female rabbit (spayed and neutered of course) and my plan is to keep the new one in their own space for a few days, then scent swap by exchanging items of the others' for a while, and then end it off with them living as separated neighbors for around a week or so before trying it face-to-face in a spot neither has been to. Wish me luck!
