  • In this video I take my rabbits to the vet. I explain what happened at Ash's check up and chat about pet carriers, rabbit illnesses and vet care for bunnies. I specifically talk about the importance of rabbit savvy vets and ear infections in lop eared bunnies.

    Having a rabbit-savvy vet in your area is SO important and definitely something you need to consider before getting a bunny, because certain conditions can be fatal in small animals when not treated ASAP. When my 3 month-old Holland Lop started showing signs of GI stasis, I was thankfully able to get in touch with my local small-animal vet and have her seen within an hour... I don’t even want to think about what might have happened if there wasn’t someone experienced in rabbit care nearby.

      It's amazing that you prioritise having a rabbit savvy vet nearby! Your bun must really thank you for it, definitely a scare to see signs of GI stasis in your buns and not having the proper care close by xx

    YES YES YES!! I got my first bunny when I was 12 and he passed at 6yrs old right after my high school graduation. I totally neglected him, didn’t get him neutered, and he lived a lonely life in a 3 story condo and never really binkied or had the chance to do zoomies. 😓 I was a horrible person at the time and had limited education and I was very- let’s just say If I saw my past self neglecting him as much as I did today, I would have beat the S outta me. Two weeks after Oreo passed away from a tumor in his chest I got Jonah who was being neglected in a pet store which I thought was a rescue. It’s not and I don’t support them anymore. Jonah was EXTREMELY violent, but with love, care, and a year of constant time together he is now comfortable and finds me trustworthy. 💖 In September 2020 I applied for adoption at my local rabbit rescue and in January, it was now Jonah and Naomi.🐰🐰I’m doing everything right from then on out.💛 If anyone relates to my comment just remember that you have the power to change your rabbits quality of life. It’s better to do it right now in this moment rather than later. Everyday is an entire week for a rabbit. Don’t carry the same regrets I do while you still have your buns, because I would do so many things if I could see him again and let him know that I am sorry for being such a failure parent. Rabbits are definitely needy creatures, but if you have the heart for it it’s a beautiful thing and very rewarding. I share my story to hopefully provoke positive change. 💛
    On a lighter note, it was so nice to finally watch a well put educated video! 😌You taught me about the lop buns being prone to ear infection because of the limited airflow. Usually, I already know about the topics so it was refreshing to learn something new. One of my dreams is to open a rabbit rescue in the next few years because I made horrible mistakes I will forever regret with my first rabbit Oreo. I want to teach people the correct way to do it the first time and of course rehabilitate the bunnies. I was filming videos about buns too, but I got unmotivated and frustrated. Every time I pick up the camera I never finish it. Anyway, from one Katt to another Kat you’re doing a great thing! 💖✨😌

      omg hi Katt! Thank you so much for sharing your experience, we all start from somewhere and along the way we fall in love with these creatures and the more we learn, our rabbit care changes too. We're all just trying to do our best and it's wonderful that you've been impacted so much by your bun Oreo. I've had a similar experience with my childhood bunnies, totally regret how they were cared for, but try to make up for it now by giving my current buns the best life possible. When you're introduced to bunnies, usually your knowledge is very limited about them and that doesn't make you a terrible person. Super excited if you ever open a rescue, you would give a lot of much needed love for every bun out there xxx amazing

      I feel the same but I had guinea pigs when I was a kid and of course when you’re a kid you don’t completely understand that you’re caring for a life. I feel bad that I didn’t do a great job for them. I have bunnies now and I do my best to give them great lives. I’m glad there’s many people online sharing proper care info now to prevent neglect and poor care! :) If I ever have kids and they want their own pets, I’d do some research with them and have them do lots on their own before letting them get a pet. And probably have them be at least 14 years old to make sure they are responsible enough so they don’t go through the same mistakes as me. :/

    • @iisimplyamy8031
      @iisimplyamy8031 Před 3 lety +1

      I've felt the same, except my first pets were a variety of fishes: betta fish, goldfish, and more. The betta fishes were mine; however, the rest of the fishes belonged to my 4 year old brother. Due to the fact that he was very young and could not fulfill the responsibilities yet of taking a pet, it was up to me to take care of them for him. I did not complain tho, it was nice having more than one pet! I named my first beta fish Swimmie, and the other one something else that I could not remember. However, \at that time, I was 8, and I had limited knowledge of how to take care of pet fish. I left the duty of taking care of them to my parents after the first couple of months of taking care of them. It was irresponsible for me, and I neglected them as a pet owner. When I still took care of them often, I would sometimes forget to feed them, and they may have gone off a day hungry, which is unacceptable. Thankfully, under the care of my parents, they had amazing health and lived longer than two years (last year, my parents sold them to PetSmart to provide care for them bc they were too old, and we didn't know what to do. I have no idea how they are doing at the moment if they somehow managed to live this long or if they are even alive at all). I feel terrible for giving them a poor life, and I certainly wish I could travel back in time to be a better owner for them and apologize. even writing my pets' experience hurts my heart. hence, if you guys happen to have a pet or are going to get one, PLEASE do not make the same mistake as me and do all you can to provide them their best life. they need your care and you need them. anyways, sorry i wrote a paragraph lol but have a good day! 💖

I would just put the carrier in their play pen for 10 minutes with some food or snacks in there, and increase the time everyday. After some time they'll learn that the carrier doesnt necessarily mean a trip to the scary vet. I hope this'll work for you :)

    I know lops are also more prone to having teeth issues as well because of the shape of their skull - they usually have smaller, flatter faces compared to some other breeds. Just something else for lop owners to be aware of! It definitely is sad to me that people have bred certain animals to a point where their quality of life can be severely diminished just because we think it makes them cuter. :(

    Lop eared rabbits (as well as other breeds like netherland dwarfs) are bread for flat faces, known as brachycephaly. It means they're also prone to a lot more issues with their head, especially their jaw. Lots of flat faced rabbits have misaligned teeth and need them trimmed, since they cant trim them naturally.

    I was looking for a rabbit savvy vet near me but couldn’t find. My mom recommended our dogs vet, as he said he takes rabbits. Thankfully it was just a regular checkup but that’s all I needed to know I will not be going back there. I felt as if I was more educated on rabbits then the vet and I knew I had to get out of there right away when he said he does not think I should get my bunny spayed......because rabbits don’t get sick like other animals so he “doesn’t recommend it, she doesn’t need it”..... excuse me😭I have now found an exotic vet in a different county but I’m willing to take the drive to get my bunny the best care and someone actually knowledgeable on what she needs!!

He has to go every 2-3 weeks to the vet to get his teeth trimmed. To get him to overcome the fear of the carrier, I let him use it as part of his space as well as enrichment exercises. He was able to explore and really comfortable with it.

    Believe me, i have watched CZcams video's about rabbits and rabbit care since i got my lovely rabbit lop for my B-day from my mom & sister and since i know how fragile they are, every time i see something that i personally think: "Oh, that's not normal", i call my vet. He's been here sometimes for nothing, but meanwhile i ask to clip the nails, i ask a bit of more info, about food or hay or anything really and the thing is, he takes his time with me and my rabbit. It's not that he is constantly trying to get out or is in a hurry, and that's what i like about my vet. Also if he needs to give him is his vaccines, he just let my rabbit choose the most comfortable way to sit. There are a lot of vets who just grab your rabbit and go for it. But anyway, i understand you when you say that you call your vet when you think there is something wrong, even if there isn't. I can see that you love your bunny's! 🥰

I'm scared that he would chew on the wires, but i have already experimented with that and he doesn't seem interested at all. So, while supervised, i'll let him out whole day so he can run. Even though he himself goes into his cage after 10Min. They're wire shelving I found at a dollar store! You can try brushing or just try petting your bun a lot to get all the loose fur out while they're eating. Make sure they're getting tonnes of hay and water xx

      @@Katesque Awesome thank you!! Her poops are looking a bit better, so I will continue to keep an eye on her and help her molt best I can. I accidentally picked up the adult rabbit food rather than the young rabbit food, so I was a bit panicked about that fast transition because I know what it can do to your bun. After a bit of research I found that other people have done it too and their bunnies were fine so I was crossing my fingers. Id say she’s been on it for about two weeks now and i’ve been giving her a sprinkle of alfalfa on her hay to hopefully substitute for the alfalfa-based pellets she was used to having. She’s my first rabbit but she means so much to me so i’ve not been getting much sleep thinking about her.. I am pretty sure she is completely fine and I am just over analyzing and being emotional, but it’s nice to talk to someone that has also done extensive research and loves their buns just as much.

      You can try suggesting keeping them in an x-pen or free roaming in your room. You can try offering to be extra good or do more chores and help out around the house in exchange for letting them in your room xx

    I recently got 2 baby bunnies that were very social and I was unaware that rabbits do not like being carried so I carried them often I now know that they do not like to be carried but they are very scared and do not like to be pet anymore does anyone have any tips on how to make them more social again

    • @Katesque
      @Katesque  Před 3 lety

      Give them their space and slowly let them get used to your presence without touching them for a long time, then when they don’t run away anymore you can try giving them treats and slowly start petting them again xx

Although, I have a puppy that tries to play with every living thing she sees. I don't want to give the bunny a heart attack.. what do I do?? please help!!

      If you can, try to put the bunny in the corner of a room, that way 2/4 sides are “protected”. Maybe drape a blanket on another side so that the puppy and bunny can only see each other through one side. I brought a puppy home last year and my bunnies are fine with him, but you’re right to be extra careful when it comes to not spooking the bunny. Also you could take the puppy for a walk before the bunny gets there, so that he/she is mellow, and then keep him/her on the lead for when the puppy first is “introduced” to the bunny so that he doesn’t lunge at it or anything. Hope that helps a bit!

    Spay or neuter them all you have to do is take them to the animal shelter and they’ll do it for free
