A bit of a presentist bias? How could they miss one of the most popular and memorable songs in Eurovision history, Domenico Modgno's Nel "blu depinto blu", better know as "Volare", from 1958? According to Wikipedia:
"It spent five non-consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 in August and September 1958 and was Billboard's number-one single for the year. Modugno's recording subsequently became the first Grammy winner for Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the 1st Annual Grammy Awards in 1958. The song was later translated into several languages and it was recorded by a wide range of performers. "

Fairytale the following year which got more, people always forget to mention that the voting system had changed, just like 2016 which has changed again and countries are able to get even more points than ever. During the older traditional voting system though, Lordi got the most points there'd ever been.

That was my second favorite Eurovision winner. However, didn't 2016's winner Ukraine beat the old record with 147 points, with a total score of 534 points. 2016 runner-up Australia got 511 point, 124 points more than Norway's Fairy tale. But still, it still has the highest margin ever, with a margin of 169 points from the runner-up.

and Rybak only had the highscore because around 2005 the contest changed and the competing countries almost doubled (from around 25 to up to 43). so it's also not fair to say scored the highest score.

I'm French and while abroad became friend with a swedish guy and a finnish guy, and we actually ended up talking about Eurovision because they were saying that they were about to watch the eurovision this year and all. With my other French friend we started laughing because for us Eurovision is oldfashioned and my friends looked so serious that we thought they were joking. The conversation was very interesting cause we realized that actually it was a huge thing in other countries especially East Europe and Scandinavia. There are apparently huge interests in winning the Eurovision etc. While in France we don't really want it to be held in France for economic reasons and also since not a lot of people watch it, who would come to see it live, you know ? Haha It tends to change now, for a couple of years, we only started to have a TV show where you can choose who will compete at the contest. But again, there is not a huge audience watching it. My point is, I am just guessing that the reason why scandinavian countries tend to win more is ( apart from the fact that Loreen is a goddess haha
