The settlement of Loxton began in 1894 and was initially a farming and grazing area. It is now a thriving irrigation town and a popular holiday destination for fishing and watersports on the River Murray.
When we visited Loxton, we wandered down East Terrace, visited the Historical Village and saw the Tree of Knowledge and the Big Pelican. We then walked along the conservation trail and drove out to Banrock Station.
East Terrace is a lovely tree-lined street with cafes, a bakery and unique specialty shops, and it also has some interesting historic buildings and information boards.
The Loxton Historic Village is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm and has over 45 fully furnished buildings and sites. You can visit the general store, bakery, church, garage and many more exhibits. As you view the exhibits, you can also listen to the recorded historical stories.
At the Riverfront Lions Park, you can see the Big Pelican and the Tree of Knowledge, which records the heights of all the floods in this region.
The Loxton Community, Conservation and Heritage Park trail has early homestead ruins, lovely native gardens and tree carvings created by Tim Baulderstone.
Forty-five kilometres from Loxton is the Banrock Station Wine and Wetland Centre, where you can wander along the wetland walking trails or relax on the spacious deck and enjoy morning tea, lunch or wine tasting.
