🏡 Explore Richmond Tasmania ~ Things to do in and around Richmond Tasmania
Richmond is a charming historic town in Tasmania's Coal River Valley. It has a fascinating convict history and lovely Georgian architecture, with many restored buildings dating back to the early 1820s.
It is a popular day trip destination as it’s only 25 kilometres from Hobart.
00:00 Introduction
01:00 Richmond Village
02:05 Richmond Bridge
02:45 Richmond Gaol
03:50 Richmond Heritage Walk
06:00 Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary
07:10 Coal River Valley Wineries
07:40 Wicked Cheese
As you wander around Richmond Village, you will see many lovely old Georgian buildings. You will also find a selection of cafes, bakeries, traditional hotels and art and homeware shops, including a Lolly shop and a Gingerbread shop.
Richmond Bridge is a heritage-listed arched bridge and is the oldest bridge in Australia still in use. It was built by convicts between 1823 and 1825 and has four distinct arches. You can wander along the river, feed the ducks, and admire this amazing bridge.
The Richmond Gaol is the oldest gaol in Australia. It was built in 1825 and used until 1928; it is now open daily for self-guided tours, during which visitors can see the conditions the convicts had to endure.
The Heritage Walk starts at the bridge. Along the 2.2-kilometre circuit, you will learn about Richmond's significant historic sites.
You can also visit Pooseum, an interesting and educational ‘poo’ museum and see Old Hobart Town, an award-winning historical miniature village.
A short drive from Richmond, you can discover Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, where you can get up close to the Tasmanian devils, wombats, quolls, and hand-feed the kangaroos.
You can also explore the Coal River Valley; this lovely old wine region has more than 20 wineries and cellar doors.
You can enjoy a cheese platter at Wicked Cheese and browse their well-stocked gourmet food selection.

I have so many happy childhood memories of Kingston. My late grandparents had a shack directly across the rd from the beach. It was very emotional for me to see the beach and light house again, being there with my grandparents. Its changed A LOT since i was last there. Its massive now, it was only a tiny little country town. It didnt have those wall paintins, or the history trail when i was there, But it was nice to see the light house, the IGA and the 2 pubs again, and it was especially nice to see the beach again and Larry the Lobster. When i was a little girl, i loved Larry the Lobster. Before me and my nanna knew his name, we called him Lollie the Lobster. And when i found out that he was bought by a private owner, i was worried like the locals that he was going to get removed, but i was super glad that he got to stay where his always been. It wouldn't be Kingston wothout Larry welcoming you into Kingston when u arrive 🦞
