  • Norton Motorcycles have been through the mill in recent years and at one point it seemed the iconic brand would be lost forever. However TVS purchased Norton in 2020 and in those 18 months they have built a 100% new factory in Solihull and I've been lucky enough to have a full tour!
    Join me and the new CEO Dr. Robert Hentschel for the ultimate Norton factory tour!

    I think Norton are in very safe hands here. The V4's and 'heritage' models are their entry point in since the V4 concept previously was brilliant if somewhat poorly executed (quality wise). TVS are a huge company and they wouldn't invest vast amounts and build a state of the art facility just to churn out a relatively small number of niche products.. I think they have some pretty serious plans up their sleeves.

    I've had three Norton's in my lifetime. Back in the '60's I first had a 1962 Norton Electra and then two Norton Scramblers. A tomato red 1963 or '64 and a 1965 candy apple red one. They were vertical twins as this is before they slanted the motor forward a tad. They came with no mufflers so I had to install some stubby ones on them as the neighborhood I lived in at the time had some ornery cops! Today at 74 years old here in the state of Georgia I have three BMW's. A 2000 R1150GS, a 2001 K1200RS and a 2016 S1000R I just purchased used with 8000 miles on it. I also have a 2005 Suzuki Hayabusa that I bought new. I have riding 58 years and plan to keep on riding as long as I can. It keeps you young!

    • @dadams1947
      @dadams1947 Před 2 lety +2

      BTW: I remembered last night that the tomato red 750 Scrambler had a winged M on the tank for Matchless though both 750 bikes were the same. I wish I still had the candy apple red one today!

      Hi, I too had Norton’s back in the 60’s, both bought new; a 350cc Navigator and a 650ss, loved them both although the 650 ss had a few problems and I had to take it to Norton’s HQ in Birmingham to be fixed. I now have a 2001 Honda VFR V-tech which I bought second hand (2 months old)…absolutely love in every aspect of it.
      I agree biking helps you to stay young (I’m 78 now and have no plans to pack up yet), I voluntarily took the Advanced Motorcyclists test several years ago which was the best £100 I’ve ever spent…..helps me to stay alive plus when riding I have the mindset that everyone is out to kill me!
      Let’s hope that TVS Norton are successful in the future. Ride safe 🇬🇧🇬🇧

      @dadams1947 Před 2 lety +1

      @@neilurquhart8622 Yes! You have to ride like everyone out there is out to get you. I call it situational awareness. The circumferential expressway , 285 , here in Atlanta is like a racetrack! Most, (95%), of my riding is out in the countryside where you have to watch for deer darting out into the road. I was 16 when I had the 400cc Norton Electra and the darn thing would blow a headlight bulb every time I accelerated down an entrance ramp to the expressway going into town. Lucas electric's ! 😆I can't remember how the shop fixed the problem , but it was eventually sorted out. The shop, Al Rodi Motorcycle sales sold Norton's, BSA, Ducati, BMW and Honda's. In '69 I purchased the new Honda 750 4 cylinder from them and then in 1974 I bought a 1975 BMW R90S that I kept for 25 years. I finally traded that bike, BIG MISTAKE , to buy the 2000 R1150GS. I was going to trade the GS for the 2016 BMW S1000R, but they only wanted me to give me $2000.00 to $2500.00 bucks for it and I said , I'll just keep it. It looks like new and only has 29,000 mile on it. My last name is Adams so I have some English heritage and love Lambchop's rides out into the countryside and villages in England. Yes, I hope Norton is successful as well. I plan on riding s long as I can hold the bikes up! 🤣 Stay safe.

      Except they were cutting with a bit when they said laser sharp accuracy & polishing when they said grinding. They make these kinds of mistakes on the motorcycles and not just the marketing then there will be problems. Norton can't afford to get anything wrong. Their production numbers mean they charge more per bike. This means they are more expensive than the competition. The price difference has to be quality... They will only get so many people willing to pay for the name "Norton" when, make no mistake, it's really TVS. I have nothing against TVS but this is a tricky situation as they will want to maximize profits but they have also marketed that they are getting it done at the engineering level. The proper way to get this bike out is to build quality and reputation and then lose money for a year or two as you learn how to build quality at a lower price without sacrificing... We will see..

    Norton will only succeed if it makes bikes people want to ride and flogging a £30k-£35k 'masterpiece' to collectors won't get you market share, and eventually the novelty will wear out.
    Edit: make that a £30k-£45k; the RR was near £30k and the SS was £45k. The Panigale V4 is £20k base and £32k for the SP trim - and those are already overpriced. Meanwhile, Norton continues the dodgy trend of not posting prices for the bikes on their site - so much for improving perception.

    • @Desmo904
      @Desmo904 Před 2 lety +4

      To an extent I agree. However, the economies of scale will dictate that a manufacturer who employs a lot of skilled manual labour in smaller volumes will always incur higher prices. I don't ever see Norton challenging Triumph for numbers of bikes produced in a year. It is encouraging to see the apparent extent of their quality control methods though. Something the "old" company was shoddy McShod on a shoddy day about.

    I’m so so glad that Norton seems to be finally on the right path 🏍👍🏻
    When it failed last time I was hoping someone like Sir Jim Radcliff was gonna step in and buy the brand etc
    But these guys (TVS) are certainly on the right path with proper QA & QC and plenty of Lean Six Sigma and you certainly can’t have too much of Being The Customer between each stage of production / manufacture 🙏🏻

      How about giving TVS some credit for stepping in and saving the company?

    Well that was great, they really look like they've got their shit together and on course with a good attitude and emphasis on quality. It was a very impressive looking plant and I'd love to see them really get going and build up the right kind of reputation and client base. If this is how it will be, them I think it will happen

    Watching this video you realize why these bikes are so expensive. You see all the guys welding the frames by hand. These machines are truly rolling art, they are beautiful bikes.

    Very impressive and hope it goes the way of triumph making quality bikes that people want to ride... obviously the v4 will be the poster boy but will be interesting to see what else they are planning

    Another great video chops. Glad to see you getting invited to these as you are one of the best in the uk. Personally I’ll be watching Norton from the distance. Too much has happened lately im afraid to trust the brand with my money. So many people Got shafted. I wish them well however under the new owners.

    Looks like a super serious setup, solid foundation paves the way for solid branding. To be honest the designs on the v4r and the commando looks to me a hardy and bullet proof bike. If the engine can be designed and assembled by meticulous minds, it’s a good start.
