- Boston Melodic Death Metal band Wilderun are pushing boundaries and providing the perfect escapism for anyone who listens to their music. On 'Epigone' the band take a deeper and darker step beyond their expansive, prog-leaning metal scores, revealing a different kind of inner turmoil spurred from the pandemic.

Thank you for the shout out! Lör and Wilderun have played together before and we’ll surely do it again, we love those guys so much and this album is another masterpiece. Great review! Cheers 🍻
Angry Metal Guy would implode if he saw both of you perform together
@@kodakblack6643 as would I 🥴
Love Wilderun. Their 2015 album Sleep At The Edge Of The World is probably my favorite the last 10 years.
For a while Olden Tales and Deathly Trails was my favorite, the most fun, but I've been discovering Sleep at the Edge of the Earth and damn it's goooooooood. From their softer moments (Hope and Shadow) to the crushing part (Bite the Wound), they play this masterfully.
Legitimately has been my personal album of the year for every year since it's been released. So perfect.
Really excellent review, Dylan! You did a great job of describing the songs and the album and I feel like I have a much better picture of what to expect than some of the other written reviews I've read recently. Rock on!
Fantastic band and great review! Glad to see the new album doesn't disappoint and I was really happy I was able to see them for the first time late last year with Swallow the Sun in Montreal (one of the only show of the year 2021 by non-local bands over here and the only one I attended). Counting the hours until that one hits my mailbox later today.
It's nice to have a backup Opeth.
Thank you for the Shoutout
2:32 I'm new to this band, I listened to you. Hell I'm hooked after 2 minutes. I'll be back to this review in a week once I've gone thoroughly through their previous three albums. 🙌🤘🤘
The moment, you finally said Opeth :)). You're my favorite presenter. Keep up the Prog Side of BangerTV!
That Riverwood album you mentioned is awesome. Just listened to 'Dying Light' and I haven't heard anything so epic in a long while! It deserves a review, not just a shout out ;)
Thank you
Great review, Dylan! I listened to this after I watched this yesterday. Album is a masterpiece!
Thanks for shouting out Riverwood Shadows And Flames - a great find.
Hell yeah! I've booked these guys a few times and they're super rad dudes.
Awesome review! I've heard Veil Of Imagination a while ago and I remember liking it a lot, been waiting for something sounding even remotely like old school Opeth, so this should be a great listen! \m/
Check out Raise the Sun by Anciients. There's definitely some Opethy riffs and motifs in that song/band. You might like them.
More puppy!!
Also, I got some definite Riverside vibes from the Woolgatherer/Passenger clips you played. Not a bad thing, just a thought. I'll have to check out the full album to see how the whole thing progresses.
Loved Veil of Imagination and can't wait to check this out.
Fuck yeah! I had no idea this was coming! Their last album was a definite 10/10 so I can't wait to check this out.
🔥M🔥A🔥S🔥T🔥E🔥R🔥P🔥I🔥E🔥C🔥E🔥 ...Opeth + Enslaved + Aquilus + Dream Theater + Devin Townsend.
Man I had to do an album review of this myself, what a way to start the year in a positive note, at least musically, the bar is set, no pressure to other bands.
Boston in the house!~! Love it!
So glad you shouted out Xanthochroid! I was so sad that Erthe and Axen didn’t get more attention when it came out as it is a PHENOMENAL double album with an incredibly intricate story. Also their previous album ‘Blessed He With Boils’ is killer too.
Yup, Xanthochroid is one of my favourite bands ever. Of Erthe and Axen Pt 1 and 2 was the album(s) of the decade for me.
I agree, Xanthocroid is massively underrated! And they are a perfect suggestion for Wilderun fans.
Listened to this for the first time yesterday, and it was the first thing I felt all day, and it was glorious.
They really delivered the goods with this one, lived up to the hype for me! But i gotta say with the ending of exhaler i was hoping that the start of woolgatherer was gonna bash my face in with some heavy shit, instead it felt like starting over, my only small gripe with the album, other than that it's fantastic.
Fully agree. They shouldnt have put both songs with the least dynamics first. I skip the imo boring first song...
NO, STOP! Please, I’m still catching up on 2021’s albums! 😩
I’m pretty excited for this, having discovered them on their “Veil of Imagination” album, which I haven’t listened to enough frankly, but I think is pretty deserving of the adoration it received. But yeah, this is on the back burner till February. January is TYMHM month.
What a way to kick it off. Really wondered about this one too. Heard that one -video-single. Not this one. But wish it were.
Awesome singles. Cant wait to hear the whole
Yesss a friend just recommended this band to me. Just my style. I'm in!
Is there a rule that every Prog metal band has to have a song called Passenger?
Getting mega Opeth vibes from the sound clips so far. I need to give this a list as I loved their last couple of records
Great review as always from Gowan. Definitely gonna spend more time with this band. 9:48 why don't you just say "Get fucked Blayne"
thank you for calling out people with the comparison, couldnt agree more
Pleeeaaaseeee review Wiegedood next week!
Not even having listened to the album, what you describe and what I heard, it sounded as if it started calm before the storm, and then built up to a chaotic storm at the end. Even the album art gives it away. Sounds very deliberate.
Wilderun: we make the albums that Opeth should have made after Watershed.
Funny thing about the constant Devin Townsend comparisons is I can't recall any of the guys mentioning him as a significant influence, but I still well understand where these comparisons come from. Replace Evan's vocals with Devin on Exhaler and you could easily say it was the latter who wrote it!
The album sounds excellent as expected.
Wilderun's great so it'll be hard not to enjoy this one when I get to listening. Looking forward to it.
Can you up the volume of the videos, especially the reviewers talking, a little bit? Would be great!
really loved their former albuns, in fact they might be my favorite band with those. but this is way to progressive for me. i can't find the fun and joy i got from the simple folk passages and the fantastic vocals. will keep listening and maybe it will grow in me!
Same. I love especially Veil of imagination and Sleep at the edge of earth, but this one is just too much Opeth and too little Wilderun for me. Maybe I must give the songs another chance though.
Awesome! I'll go to Bandcamp now and get th ... Oh, that's weird ... :/
Century Media things mate.
How about infected rain new album?
Wilderun was one of those bands I've been interesting in checking out, but for one reason or another it just was not clicking for me. A friend of mine saw them open for Swallow the Sun and sent me some clips of the live performance and they sounded great and from the snippets I've heard from this review, I'm hearing some Vertebrae era Enslaved along with the Opeth/Devin Townsend comparisons, so this may be the album that gets me into Wilderun!
IOW best era Enslaved.
Please don’t murder me Enslaved early days fans. I like it all, but mid-2000s Enslaved is perfection. 🤘
@@nikolademitri731 I'll have to ask them not to murder me as well! The first Enslaved album I really got into was Below the Lights and I've loved everything after that.
@@VIGLounge Same here. I think that’s the album a lot of people discovered them on, or at least I think that’s the case in America (idk where you’re from, I’m not assuming you’re American too), because I don’t remember any of my friends into hard rock or metal talking about them before that album. This might just be the bias of my experience, but it seems to me that’s where a lot of people jumped on board. I think it’s a matter of accessibility, maybe. When I first found that album, there’s no way I was open minded enough to listen to the earlier material, and it was well before I enjoyed “trve black metal”.. ✌️
@@nikolademitri731 No worries I'm from Canada. I first heard the song The Dead Stare on a website called Black Metal Radio in 2003
Doggo seems to agree :)
Even his good doggo felt the momentum coming from the album.
Definitely called me out when talking about criticizing this band for just sounding like Opeth lol, nice. Early Haken seemed to also be in there. But I’m not a big prog fan so I’m a lot more critical of it when I hear it verse death/thrash/traditional. Glad to band is picking up steam though. Good for them. Xanthochroid call out was awesome! Love that band.
cool
First album in 2022 5 skulls
Is that a Gorguts t-shirt?
Yes
Yep
Very good music song rock. 🤘🔥
I really love Opeth very much, but wilderun have blown my mind in a slight different way. They are not the same. And I believe this band Will ve a driver for prog metal band in future.
That was the most down and classiest criticism/“the bad,” I’ve ever heard. It was like there’s nothing bad about this album notice the bad things about your albums! Hahaha Objectivity run amok!
Al Gore rhythm comment.
This album's a banger though! Like if Devin Townsend led Opeth, but different, but not really...
Edit: just got to 09:20 in the review :)
I was super cereal about the Al Gore rhythm comment
Is it not "Wild-run"?
It is Will de run
@@benmech I'm going to have to start saying it differently in my head from now on.
Sleep at the Edge of the Earth and Veil of Imagination are both masterpieces. this new one is a little too weird for me though
I wish he would have dwelt more on Corona. :( ;)
Veil of Imagination was the best album of the previous decade imo. Just love the dynamics and it always brings a smile on my face. So expectations were high. I'm a little disappointed, especially by the boring first song. It may be beautiful but its not the music I buy this album for...
Awesome music, but the clean vocals destroy it for me. Too clean and way too smooth.
Personally I'm not a fan of albums that meander around, taking excessive amounts of time to build up to what the song is trying to achieve. There's a lot to like about the new Wilderun, but I just felt that I'd like it more if it were more concise.
how very not prog of you to say that :)
@@BangerTV For the record, my favourite Prog Metal band is Threshold, and their 2017 release "Legends of the Shires" is an under-appreciated masterpiece.
This band is what Opeth should have sounded like after Watershed, except maybe a little less Riverside-y.
After the first two listens I don't like it at all. Veil of Imagination had me hooked within minutes, but here the first two tracks are just borderline boring for me. After that it gets better. I will give it a few more tries and just hope it klicks. Would be a shame otherwise.
Ha, exactly the same thoughts here.
Took me a decent amount of listens before it finally clicked. Definitely one of those that grows on you.
Bit too symphonic for my taste and the vocalist a tad bland in the clean sections
But if this is your bag then cheers to that
Not really loving this album! It is definitely good, and these guys are killer musicians for sure. But to me it just misses a lot of emotion, to really make me love it.
Why did the drummer drag the pancake gong drum out into the woods? So unnecessary and ridiculous 🤦
It’s prog lol
I found that the strings overpowered the guitars during many of the high intensity moments. The songs also lacked structure and went from section to section without rhyme or reason
Idk....I seem to be in the minority on this but it didn't hit for me
About 11 months late haha, anyways… I half agree with your comment. The longest tracks, Woolgatherer and Identifier, definitely have a bunch of these filler orchestral sections or clean sections which seem patched together rather than part of 1 song. However, the rest of the album felt pretty coherent, even Passanger which is a longer song but doesn’t meander too much with the clean and orchestral sections like the aforementioned.
Overall I still think Veil of imagination is better, but I appreciate them trying to experiment with their sound on Epigone.
Wilderun > Devin Townsend
disappointment for me
Then again, another American band ripping off Opeth and Devin Townsend. Nothing original here.
