To answer your question they turned to Tamu (the drummer) because it was her first show coming back after giving birth to her child to sing to her. That's the song that sealed the deal for me! I just couldn't believe it was the same band than Dissension and Oiran (the only 2 songs I heard from them before hearing this one). So powerful and beautiful! Everytime I hear Hazuki (the guitarist with her glasses on her micstand) and Saki making their guitars cry during the solo section there is that dust in my eye... They played this song as the encore during their first show with audience since Covid starts at Line Cube Shibuya in January (bluray to be release next week) and they all were very emotional during it, actually Mayu had a hard time at the end but managed to keep it together and nailed that last note better than ever! Brilliant!

You are correct. Nemophila are named after the flower. 5 petals standing for the 5 members of the band. Life is like an anthem for the band. Mayu often has a hard time not getting emotional singing this due to its beautiful words. Its like the story of the band from beginning till now. That's why she cried singing this at their first live gig in front of a massive crowd which is being released on CD/DVD.

Jan. 9 wasn't their first live show in front of a crowd. Latter half of 2019 and early 2020 they had several such gigs.

From my comment on the original video.. "This is a great song from their first live stream concert this summer.. Was even better watching and hearing it stream live. For those that did not see it. Before the concert, Saki had a message up to stay tuned after the show for an encore. At the end of the show they took a break and came back on. They then started talking, which lead to Saki talking to Tamu about her coming back and the recent birth of her baby. They all started crying. As they were talking, all the members were turning their mic stands towards Tamu so they could sing the last song to her. Also shown in the video was them surprising Hazuki with a birthday cake since it was her birthday at this time. While some of these members have other projects going on, it appears that this is something special to them and real to them. It looks not as a project but as something real and organic. If so, I am sure there will be much more coming from them"... Over 2 years later. They are still going strong and about to drop a new video next week, Tour next month, first show in the US in July, Aftershock Festival in October, and Tamu has since had a 2nd baby.

In their still so young career in this constellation, this is their masterpiece for me. It's not just a song that sings about life, it's an emotional anthem like you rarely get to hear. These girls are very special, and I wish them all the success in the world. 💮🤘🏻
A song that goes in a similar direction is their track 'Game Over', which I highly recommend. There is no video for it, but just listen to it. It's worth it if you liked 'Life'.
Greetings and have a nice weekend! 🙋🏻‍♂️

Agree with all who are calling this their Anthem. LIFE has practically come to represent NEMOPHILA for me now. They performed this along with REVIVE and DISSENSION as part of a 3-song set at NAONのYAON 2022 just this past Friday as reported by someone who saw the show firsthand. I hope they release those MVs 🌸✨🌠

The audio was from their first live stream. Most of the video as well with some back stage footage. Tamu was returning after the birth of her first child. There was a prolonged dialogue welcoming her back and congratulations for her baby. Hence the tears. You really need the subtitles on to get the full reaction.

  • @OvDevilz

For corona situation reference, NEMOPHILA have another song titled ANOTHER STORY, written by Mayu once their tour in 2020 cancelled and performed while lockdown where everyone record individually at home except Tamu. She was on maternity leave that time and this performance of LIFE is dedicated to her...
This is probably the irreplaceable favourite by many NEMOPHILA fans including myself. This song have a deeper meaning about celebrating LIFE and those around us who make us as who we are today and those still around us who continue supporting us through the rest of the journey and not giving up on any circumstances but become stronger despite any setbacks. In the first clip, they performed this song in one of the live streaming show as finale and in this show, they all facing the drummer Tamu, instead of their 'audience', as an appreciation and thank you gesture for coming back to them after taking a long break on maternity leave. This show is Tamu's first time playing with the rest of the band members (before the show Tamu only did rehearsal with Haraguchi-san in her studio to get her groove back) after giving birth and they all missed her during those time. It was the longest period they had not seen each other let alone jamming together. They all shed tears in this show and of course most notably Tamu herself towards the end of the song.
In January 2022 live show with actual audience, this song again performed as the finale and during the performance, mayu looked lost staring out in the audience, looking around her and each of the band members in their eyes and mayu eventually cried hard. The deep meaning of this song really hits her hard as she is the one writing the lyric of this song and its really reflected her LIFE story in which, part of that story is NEMOPHILA being a gift to her LIFE by all the band members and its really touching seeing how far they all have travelled together to eventually pull off the one-man live show together. Before the final bow, Tamu was the first to approach mayu, gave her a hug and gentle stroke on her hair like a mother's gesture. They really living the spirit of "jigoku no yurufuwa", playing heavy as hell and being true to their nature as being ladies, fluffy cute and overall lovely.

The name Nemophila is indeed taken from a type of blue & white flower.
They have made a lot of progress in a relatively short space of time, but this is as much down to understanding how to market themselves online during the pandemic to raise their profile (the covers/uploads used to be roughly fortnightly when touring/gigging in Japan was impossible) and close relationships with established artists through their other bands/work giving them opportunities (much of the all female j-rock/metal scene are quite close knit and there's a lot of musicians who've played in multiple bands).
Saki (guitarist with painted Marshall halfstack) has the most established prior presence, as she's been playing professionally in bands for over a decade now; most notably (until they recently went on hiatus) for the band Mary's Blood (who had toured internationally and achieved moderate domestic success commercially), who themselves were formed from former members of Dextrose (a band who had 19 different members over their run and spawned multiple other bands, including what became the rhythm section of Lovebites). Saki's also got a project with former Dragonforce member Frédéric Leclercq called Amahiru. She has a long term relationship established with Keiko & Sun-Go (singer & guitarist respectively) from Show-Ya (actual legendary 80s Japanese all female rock/metal band, who are godmothers of much of the current scene). This is in part through frequent participation in their long running women performer only festival Naon no Yaon.
Before Nemophila, Tamu Murata the drummer had established her reputation more as a session player and support musician, touring for several other bands over the years. Her background is equally jazz fusion/prog as much as hard rock/metal and she has many connections within the industry. She's also a bit of a maternal figure toward the younger members of the band as she's literally become a mum since starting the band, now balancing her career with having two young daughters (as others have said, this performance was shortly after coming back from having her first girl, who's now two).
The singer mayu previously played with rock band Lipstick under the moniker Sindy and Nemophila was initially meant to be a one off live covers session in 2019 for her after leaving that band, but gelled well enough to become a permanent thing.
The other guitarist Hazuki previously played in mid-level band Disqualia and also is the second guitarist for the band of teen shred prodigy Lisa-X (who's 17 now but has been uploading crazy guitar covers and the like since she was 8, also having jammed with famous guitarists Paul Gilbert, Marty Friedman & Kiko Loureiro). She has a metal/fusion background, including being a big fan of the melodic death metal group Arch Enemy.
The bassist Haraguchi-san has the least prior gigging experience of the group, but has known mayu since high school and was the first to become involved due to their previous friendship.

Look at the NEMOPHILA logo and all we’ll become clear. And say the name the way they do.
BTW, you’re hearing the studio recording from the album.
The lyrics are great. Find them online. There’s also a fan-made video with a lyrics translation.
They are not crying because of Covid; it’s a motherhood/sisterhood moment.
You will see both SAKI and HAZUKI wearing glasses in other videos.

I think thats a different version or at least a re-mixed take. The guitars coming in on the second verse play a little differently, and Mayu sings a cleaner version on the LP. You don't hear as much raspy-ness on some of the high notes.

This was part of their Livestream. They planned it this way, to welcome back Tamu (from childbirth) with a personal performance that was actually the start of the Livestream (Tamu was clueless). You REALLY need to re-watch this with the version with lyrics, because the lyrics are some of the most beautiful and meaningful lyrics EVER. They’re crying and facing Tamu because this was Tamu’s return from maternity leave and Saki gave a speech talking about how much they love her and missed her but were so happy about her having her daughter which ended up with everyone crying and playing the song to Tamu directly.
If you watch later behind the scenes footage you’ll see that they all spoil her daughter outrageously. LOL
