    Well, at least with Bushiroad, Luck and Logic got localized entirely because so many people spoke out saying they wanted it...only for the game to crash and burn in local markets even before it did in Japan, so I feel like Bandai not announcing plans yet is partially to avoid a situation like that, where they overestimate demand for the product and end up with egg on their face.

    • @Albireo20
      @Albireo20 Před 4 lety +4

      the problem with Luck and Logic was mostly Bushiroads own fault... they annoucend it almost immediatly with the JP release date and that was it. They didn't even pour any kind marketing in it, I played L&L at my local shop and I had to do everything from telling my local cardshop about the game because Bushi never send them any information about the game. My local shop already sold CFV, WS and Buddyfight so they had a business relationship with Bushi and even organized some Spring Fests for Bushi.
      Still we had to ask Bushi for promotion materials and I had to find out dates for special promo tournaments and sneaks via their website because our shop never got any information about the game, even most of the european online shops never heard of the game and never put it in stock, so players couldn't even find out that way. It was a mess.
      On their Tournament tours especially in Europe (where I live) in almost no location they offered BCS style tournament for L&L and I think even in US not all locations had one. Finally when I had a small community of about 6-10 players and we started doing locals every two weeks the news hit that they would discontinue the english game...
      I loved Luck & Logic, it was an amazing game with so much potential the game system was a bit complex at first, but once you got the general idea it played beautifully and worked pretty well. Some people let the "Luck" part scare them away, but actually I still consider L&L the Bushigame with the least luck involved, as you had so many mechanics to reduce the luck factor. I'm still sad that the game died it's silent and undeserved death, it deserved better if Bushi only would have promoted it more.

    This is a fantastic video, really detailed and educational into the Japanese TCG market and history! I'm surprised you didn't mention as well though that this is also a perfect time to release this game because it seems as though we're in a Digimon Renaissance. With the release of Last Evolution Kizuna arguably the end of the original Digimon Adventure anime and as part of the franchise's anniversary announcements there's been a constant renewal of the franchise starting with the lack luster Tri Movies but continued on with the decent video game releases, adult collectible figures and digivice v-pets, model kits, and now peaking with the introduction of the (albeit only a few episodes are out) well received new reboot Adventure: anime, Bandai has been really smart about like you said, appealing to and hooking the new generation of children while also realizing the birth decline and recognizing that many people grew up with this franchise and hold a lot of nostalgia for it and is now profitable again. I think renewing the interest of old fans of the Hyper Coliseum card game and creating just a solid fun game that also retails for really cheap helps hook players that would just want to try something different. Great video man!

    Great video. I feel like you're the only youtuber out there who touches on the details of TCGs and their history. I was wondering if you were ever going to make a video about Vanguard and its current state since you mentioned the 2018 reboot has been awkward and alienated the playerbase. I'm curious why the reboot didn't take off that well.

    • @lost-worlds
      @lost-worlds  Před 4 lety +4

      I've thought about trying to do it, though it's a depressing topic to cover. A lot of little issues piled up: splitting an already-small player base into two formats, providing inadequate tournament support for each by rolling back best-of-3 and putting Standard/Premium on different days instead of giving both tournaments 2 days, devaluing all of the G-era cards at the start and causing American shops to abandon the CFV singles market...it didn't help that the anime reboot was almost too faithful to the manga so the characters felt flatter, and it had poor production values relative to the original series people were actually nostalgic for. The scale of the reboot's power creep was also much more aggressive than players of the classic game were accustomed to, probably exemplified by how dominant Melody became after it was introduced. This is basically the tip of the iceberg; it feels like everything that could go wrong did, and there just wasn't a cohesive plan for what to do with the franchise long-term. Even now, the new Order mechanic is controversial.

    • @davewittenberg905
      @davewittenberg905 Před 4 lety

      @@lost-worlds That makes sense. Honestly I've mostly enjoyed the reboot (anime and card game) sans the quick pacing of the powercreep in the game. But I have also noticed Vanguard has definitely fallen in sales and maybe popularity as an extension? It's not even close to top 3 anymore with other games like BS, MTG, Pokemon and even Bushi's own Weiss overtaking it. Do you see Bushi ever bringing Vanguard back to its original glory when it could trade punch for punch with the likes of YGO or Duel Masters or is it just going to continue to dwindle and go the path of Buddyfight which seems to be on its final legs?

    • @lost-worlds
      @lost-worlds  Před 4 lety +2

      @@davewittenberg905 That's a tough one. I wish they would do good by us, but...in the first place, I think Bushiroad took CFV in the wrong direction with the reboot by targeting an older audience; they tried to stop competing with the Konami and Takara/Wizards, focusing on lapsed older players rather than complete neophytes. This made the game very newbie-unfriendly--even now it's focused on nostalgic iconic cards for the core clans, rather than introducing new main characters. There's no more TCG lore being produced for the series in Monthly Bushiroad or on the official website, so it's hard for new players to learn who the Cray characters are and get invested in the TCG's mythos. The current rarity system is a problem for adolescents because the VR distribution rate is too low. (Contrast to the old days when it stopped at RRR, or even in early G when you only needed a small number of GRs.)
      In order for them to restore the game to its glory days, Bushiroad would have to decide that they want to pursue that demographic again and restructure their entire TCG/magazine/anime production pipeline to target that audience. (Ideally, I think they would actually take a leaf from Bandai and try to pursue a broad 10~30 demographic.) And frankly, it might require *another* reset to change the power/shield/trigger relationship and reformat the game's power creep into a cycle that's actually tolerable for kids on a limited budget, and that would kill the game outright if it didn't pay off. Most of the game's established base would probably leave if all of their V-series cards were suddenly forced into Premium and they had to start over again for Standard.
      My personal suspicion is that Bushiroad's current plan is to bet on new IPs like Rebirth and Dominator (they assigned Vanguard's lead designer to Rebirth, and have BDF's creator on Dominator) and continue supporting the old TCGs in a reduced capacity until their profit margins taper off. The factor that might change this is the success of ZERO and the Japanese re-runs of the original anime on CZcams, which have both demonstrated that people are still deeply attached to the gameplay, writing, and characters of TMS-era Vanguard. (ZERO actually caught those lapsed fans the reboot was supposed to turn into core players.)
      What Bushi will do with that information is anyone's guess; I don't think they themselves know what to do with the Vanguard IP. The Koushien arc, the Shinemon arc, this new "If" series, all feel like they're winging everything without a long-term goal. I would like them to restore Vanguard, but I think it's unlikely in light of the initial reboot momentum wearing off.

    • @davewittenberg905
      @davewittenberg905 Před 4 lety +1

      @@lost-worlds That's a very insightful analysis. That's really sad if they'll have to rely on their new TCGs and focus less attention on Vanguard. I mean that game more or less put them on the map and it has mostly held a good reputation throughout the years. But your points make sense. While it's easy to make a deck on a kid's budget it's more often than not going to be good enough for events and it costs a bit to to acquire VRs and with no reprints they get very expensive over time. I guess it's good that ZERO and the OG re-runs have been positively received but like you said at this point they've dug a hole that's pretty deep to get out of which makes it hard to steer the franchise back in that original direction. Maybe these order cards will eventually evolve into something that will revitalize the game like G Guardians.
      As far as the long-term goal of the IP, what I've seen from the anime so far suggests to me they're just trying to invest a lot into the worldbuilding/lore of the series. They're creating all these stories of characters to make a richer world that feels more connected and tighter than the OG/G series. Like who ever thought you'd get an origin story for Shin or that Emi would be the main character of her own arc. On the anime side of things I personally feel like the Vanguard franchise seems to be experimenting and being more creative than some of its competitors (YGO/DM), it's trying to push the envelope of what you would normally expect out of a card game franchise. Stuff like much shorter, compact story arcs, no tournaments, protagonist changing every arc, etc. But it has its drawbacks.
      While the V series invests a lot more into its story, it is lacking a lot in the card game department. Which is a big point of contention for a lot of people. The choreography and gameplay of the series is fairly basic compared to the 2011 anime. Although one can argue gameplay started going downhill from Link Joker when they started to skip turns and whatnot. Regardless, like you said it seems that targeted group of people, the ones who grew up with the 2011 Vanguard are still nostalgic for those times but on the other hand Bushiroad has already committed to this path and keeps going deeper every year. They did mention there's a brand new anime coming in 2021. Whether it will be a brand new cast or same characters in a different story has yet to be determined. But with Vanguard's 10th anniversary right around the corner hopefully there's a chance 2021 will be a great year for the franchise to get back to the top.

    Evangelion CCS was released in Japan. At least Bandai has a listing for Japan on the CCS website.
    Honestly, you get used to Chrono Clash System's icons pretty quick and most are fairly intuitive. However, Eva did show some pretty big cracks in the system regarding the limitations of the icons. They had to put further icons on certain card's images to show they were EVA for the Pilot mechanic, a mechanic similar to Digimon's Evolution. Digimon using text causes it to have a lot more components to play with and the use of Blockers does make it a much better game than CCS.
    I really can't see CCS continuing the moment Digimon hits. It's not exactly healthy now for a multitude of reasons Digimon has honestly fixed, but it will be the death knell. Frankly? I am surprised CCS is continuing past Evangelion and I think the only reason it's doing so is due to the art source and small dev team really lowering the production costs and the IPs selling the game. I'm reluctant to spend more on it and apparently Eva was amazing.

      After looking into it, I realize why I didn't notice the JPN release of Chrono Clash--they launched in Japan on March 20th, and I recorded the audio for this video on March 9th 😅 It turns out that for the Japanese release of Chrono Clash, Bandai used English cards repackaged with a Japanese manual, since they didn't have to translate any effect text and could just leave the card names in English.

    i have a question regarding the card effect ''piercing'' (example: GranKuwagamon, HerculesKabuterimon). this effect triggers a security check if you attack an opponents digimon and if it is then killed by battle (the opponents digimon).
    does this stack with okuwamons effect: add +1 Security Check to this digimon? (if okuwamon is a evo-part underneath grankuwagamon)

    • @1991tcy

    I love Digimon, but it's hard being a fan. At least it was through the mid-late 2000s. It's like they go out of their way to shake up formulas which only hurt continuity. It's like the anti-Pokemon, they actively avoid continuity while Pokemon heavily relies on it.

      The Appmon toylines and video games didn't perform well in Japan. (Most kids didn't watch the show or know what it was; it had almost no advertising to drive viewership.) Toei licensed the series to Crunchyroll for a subbed release instead.
      The likely explanation is that Bandai and Toei decided it would be easier to market the Kizuna and Adventure reboot's merchandise internationally, than to pour more money into dubbing Appmon after seeing it flop domestically.

      I'm not caught up on the card pool but I suspect the best one is currently WIXOSS. The way the LRIG deck is implemented, and the game rules in general, make it hard to have unplayable hands if you're building your deck correctly. Historically WIXOSS has taken the most steps to maximize player skill, balance the different colors, and reduce the negative consequences of variance. Unfortunately the TCG's never been localized (it's a very niche game even in Japan, extremely otaku-oriented) and we haven't seen many games take inspiration from or try to build on what it's done.

    My only explanation for the other TCG striking out is that genwunners are one hell of a drug, even for Digimon I guess. Just look at CFV Zero. The game is a pile of dogshit and yet I see people shilling for it literally everywhere because they stamped the OG Vanguard crew's face on it.
    Not that this Digimon TCG is a pile of dogshit, mind you. Based on your other tutorial video series for this, the game looks pretty interesting. Not sure if I'd get hugely into it, but it'd be worth a shot if it made it over here.

    with Buddyfight now official dead i wonder how that will change the market of tcgs in japan. I personally believe that bushiroad ended buddyfight so they could focus on rebirth but i also feel that this really hurts them as well since looking at from a new player looking at a new bushiroad tcg and seeing that buddyfight, luck and logic, and in the us dragoborne all died it gives little confidence in buying into another new card game. especially since they started doing a bang dream collab with cardfight like they did with all of there other cardgames(wiess, buddyfight, and rebirth). i feel unless rebirth does something big than nothing is really going to change with it. Buddyfight players are going to move on Dimon, battle spirits, or cardfight(if not already playing it) in japan and i personally dont know a buddfight player in the us that doesnt already play cardfight.

      Yes, Duel Masters never stopped in Japan and it functions as Wizards' market equivalent for MTG. (Which up until recently hasn't been all that popular, and is more of a mid-sized game in Japan.) DM generally fights with Yu-Gi-Oh! for the #1 spot in monthly/quarterly/annual gross sales reports, and the number of main booster sets is somewhere around 75, though they've reset the numbering several times so the most recent one is DMRP-14.

      It's in a really rough place right now. The anime's been on indefinite hiatus for over a year, Media Create's month-to-month sales data consistently puts it in 8th~9th place, and back in February it was even overtaken in sales by the extremely niche otaku TCG Z/X. Before Bushi was sustaining BDF with collaborations, but now that those are going to Rebirth people are worried that Bushi's preparing to retire Buddyfight.

      @@lost-worlds I was really into buddyfight until X, around that time it felt like the powercreep was so vile it made almost every older deck unplayable, and I've noticed a severe reduction in activity in the wiki around that time as well
      I just suppose that the drastic change in playstyles in which hyper aggressive OTK beatdown or hyper defensive slow burn where the only viable competitively just turned off many from the game, I really do miss the era between hundred and triple d, it was the sweet spot between vanilla infancy and powercreep limbo
