What, you didn't like that movie that was actually 3 unrelated movies?
The thing that pisses me off the most about it is that it almost worked, the first segment is a generic prologue and works just fine stapled to the second; it would have been okay if it was just that.

Indeed, they seem to, and if you only look at them on a very surface level (as adults tend to do with media aimed at children because there's no way anything meant for children could ever be engaging to the adult mind...) then yes. They are similar. Both feature a male protagonist with spiky hair and a yellow monster companion. And as far as most parents are/were concerned when they first came out, that made them basically identical.

Licensing offers a good balance between risk and reward in entering a foreign market. The licensor, however, needs to do more than just offer up some assets and back off. They also need to choose their licensees carefully.
Nintendo went right to the top with Wizards, and it probably would've stayed with them had The Pokémon Company never come into being. Bandai choosing Upper Deck is. . .just weird. It would've made some sense in the mid-90s while even Wizards was figuring things out, but in the late 90s/early 2000s? Strange move.

I remember wondering as a kid if the green cards were some kinda anime tie in event that I missed, like how I never got to go to any of the mythical Pokemon giveaways for example, and then they changed the card back with the 3rd set and it looked cooler but it still wasn't green, in hindsight changing the card back was a terrible idea, as a youngan I never used sleeves for my cards, I think I had only 1 friend that did, and mixing card backs without sleeves is a big oopsie in just about any card game.

@@michael_betts Well, actually, there should be. In the "Core World" there is, in fact, a Village of Beginnings. Buuut it works different... the data of the digimon travels all the way to the entrance of the so called "Dark Area" (Where the Seven Great Demon Lords and GrandDracumon live), and the protector of the entrance (Anubismon) sees if the digimon deserves another opportunity. If the Digimon was well behaved, it's data would become a Digitama and would go to the Village, if not, the data would be leaved at the Dark Area so other digimon can consume it or it would become a Dark Digitama itself.

It's anime never aired in my country's television but it did on a channel belonging to our oversea neighbor that was available through cable. I'm not sure if anyone watched it or played it or if the game was even available in my country during the 2000s. I did come across several decks of cards in a game shop during the early-to-mid 2010s. And they were heavily discounted; about 50 cents per deck. For comparison, the modern Yu-Gi-Oh! boosters were between 2 to 3 euros at the time. I bought 3 or 4 different decks just to see what they were like and to see how the game's played and now they're just collecting dust in a box.

After that, he recieved various letters of the fans asking how to play or if the game would even become real. That's why he wrote the Duelist Kingdom arc, which unravels a ton more on the gimmicks the game should have (despite not much on it gone real) and makes it more original than "dumbed down Magic" while still being dumbed down Magic.

You can only activate this effect once per turn" can be shortened in your head to "banish this from grave during your own turn, and search for an archetypal card". I think how my brothers and I worked it, we assumed the number doubled against an effective-type. This way digivolving wasn't necessary to win the battle, but it could net someone a match even if it meant digivolving into a type-disadvantage. I think this was inspired by the anime, where the triad of data/virus/vaccine didn't matter too much to the actual fights.
I also think the hand-limit was 7 cards. Because we were kids. And no redraws.

Kids do that all the time--making up a game within a game--and sometimes it could be more fun than the intended way to play. It pays to have an active imagination, lol

it feels like someone looked at the japanese version of the card and said "I like that, let's do this in the west" but had no knowledge of what made the card game fun and at least somewhat balanced and decided to make their own frankensteined rules based on the original but since the changes don't make any sense, the game was just dysfunctional
couple that with bandai not having a good time with actually distributing the cards and all this recipe for disaster needs is a nice helping of a lack of video games to learn how to play-- oh

I vaguely remember getting a Digimon booster pack as a kid, as well as a couple promotional cards that I think were part of a kids meal around the time the first movie came to theaters. But, I never owned a full deck's worth since they were rarely stocked anywhere, nor did I have a clue how to play it since I never had access to a rulebook.
I really did like the layout and overall style of the cards though. I wish I still had them, especially my Skull Meramon. It was wicked cool!

Great Video, almost forgot about this game, but remembered some cards that I had, too.
On another note, what happened to the old DBZ TCG?
And is the new one still going on?

Maybe you could talk about the Digimon Data Carddass cards and arcade machines in a future video. You scanned cards to create teams. Additionally you could scan other things like keychains and Digimon you raised in your Digivice.
