  • Al Lowe was employee no. 20 at the cult software company Sierra On-line and became known as the inventor of the likeable loser Larry Laffer, who is always on the lookout for his dream woman (or new sex adventures). In the interview Al talks about game development and storytelling then and now, the exchange with colleagues at LucasArts, his Saxophone-Quartett and what his job had to do with the way Johann Sebastian Bach worked.

On my CZcams channel you can find video clips of original compositions and cover versions of computer game classics. Why "70er Jahre Junge"? I was born in the mid 70s and socialized in the late 80s/early 90s. The spirit of the then hip Indie and Alternative Rock and Pop is also reflected in my music. My lyrics are often nostalgic, sometimes melancholic, sometimes socially critical and tell autobiographical stories as well as stories of fictional characters.
As a "70er Jahre Junge" I like Captain Future, "Knibbelbilder" and the trashy commercials from back then ... and of course the Amiga 500 with its iconic block graphics. So I started to cover some Amiga soundtracks. Maybe I'll put the one or other interview here, too. You can be sure: Everything here is about the music.

I wish Al you were still making Larry games. You're greatly missed.

Larry 2 was perfection. Played it on my Tandy 1000 with its shoe box sized 5 meg hard drive. Strolling down mammary lane.😂👍

Wow! 2020 with Al Lowe! The nostalgy...!
Thank you Al for all the 80s and 90s creations!

Ja, das mit dem Datenvolumen is krass. Habe ich auch oft drüber nachgedacht. Früher war ein gesamtes Spiel kleiner als heute ein Foto.

Cool interview. I make reference to Larry - in my book, I mention a Senator Laffer from the state of Nevada.

I remember in typing school back in high school, this student loaded LSL 3 and played it on the computer. Luckily I was sitting next to him on that day and watched him play. Ten minutes in other people were watching him play. Glad the teacher did not catch us. Got hooked onto LSL since then.

This is the first time I've searched for anything about Sierra in years, and there's a new interview from Al Lowe from only 2 days ago? Wow!
That technique he describes about defining the bamboo maze with a bit set is similar to how the map was made for Atari's Pitfall, too.

I remember the first time I heard about a Larry game was like in sixth grade in about 1988 or 89. And the guy who told me about it didn´t even know the game was called Leisure Suit Larry, he just called it Larry. And he said that you have to use a "lubber" in the game, and I couldn´t believe at the time that anything like that could be part of an actual computer game. Do you know whoI mean, Jens?

Your comment sounds like it should insta-click ... but I'm not sure actually. Although I remember the word "rubber" being thrown around frequently. ;)

I'm really proud to know you, Al. I'm sorry I never played video games until very recently, as I think I would have liked Larry.
