The foot scene is only the anime. I don't think there ever has been official word on what it's message is, but online sections theorize that it's supposed to be symbolizing the story of washing judas feet. This would make sense considering all the other religious symbolism that is in the story
More accurately, there's a lot of religious symbolism added to the anime adaptation, and hardly any was present in the original story.
Not really sure how I feel about this scene. It always felt quite forced to me.
L knew that light was kira again when he didn’t get all defensive when he asked him “have you ever told the truth”. Up to that point every time he accused him of being Kira since the lock up light always got defensive and aggressive. But now he was all calm again …dead giveaway
After having watched Death Note a few times since 2009, I never realized that. Love learning new things about this anime
some points to consider regarding that wiping of the feet scene..
L saying he is doing it to atone for his sins, saying sorry twice to Light, and telling him that you will get used to it probably was a way of treating him (mockingly perhaps?) like a god since it is what he is trying to achieve..
When I watched Death Note for the first time, I just couldn't continue after this episode. It took me nearly 10 years to finish it. I loved L too much and I was 17 and heartbroken. As people mentioned washing feet is biblical reference to Jesus washing Judas's feet. Also the bell has specific slow ringing with long pauses which is typical for funerals. L hear it at the begining of episode - probably during his parents funeral and then moving to an orphanage with Watari holding his hand. Also interesting thing is that even if we don't know L's name (in anime) Light does - he can see it as the last name in Rem's Death Note.

They went all out with symbolisms on this episode. Almost like watching a new series. In fact this episode is the difference between all good shows, and a literally close to perfect anime show like this one. Its insane how subtle and yet effective most of these are.
The symbolisms are everywhere, Misa and her disturbing song with her sealed fate, the imagery of all the dolls and toys, feeling like a dressed-up doll with makeup, standing up on toes with only the puppeteer strings missing from the picture, a person who was always manipulated, doomed to do evil deeds for her one true love. The rain and the cold showing Light's true self walking the halls, the duality of Light personality and the fakeness of it all shown in the mirrored glass via L' s eyes. Ryuzaki washing Light's feet just like Judas in Christianism - washing the traitor's feet while still acknowledging respect and his loss despite of it all. The bell tolling showing not only L's scarred memories of his parent's funeral and the beginning of him becoming an orphan, but also showing a genuine realization that he is beaten, his life cycle finally coming to an end, the oldest saddest memory of his, clashing with the reality of his immediate future. Knowing that he is so close to the truth and yet also understanding that he probably can't escape his fate after all. But he will risk and do that final move anyway, regardless of the outcome because that's what he is, that's what he always was. Mindblowing. RIP.
Writing, imagery, direction, cinematography and sound is so beautiful here that it makes you forget completely that this is an anime medium. Magnificent, very few shows ever reach this level of genius. Speaks volumes of how high the production costs are here, since they transcend by far what the anime medium usually accomplishes. The moment you know that death note is a one of a kind experience and its truly a disservice to its quality, to ever watch this along with other movies or shows.
And just like that, evil wins. :D

Fun fact: there IS a rock/pop style Death Note musical, with a demo album in English and productions in Japan and South Korea, the latter of which is absolutely incredible. Since you guys like k-pop, maybe you'd already know of Kim Junsu, the legendary k-pop star who played L, and Hong Kwang Ho, who played Light, is one of my favorite voices in the world. I highly recommend having a listen. It only covers up until this episode and has a completely different ending than the series, so there's no spoilers. 22:02 maybe i am looking too much into it...but i noticed how Light's eyes here is a mix of red and brown and the red flickers..almost as if Light is in there somewhere as he watches L die..a sadness? loneliness? Regret? who knows?..but then when holding him it becomes fully red..Kira fully took over..L dying made him feel something..but the brown fully went away when he completely dies and hisbody lies in his hands.. as in L was the last thing that kept the person Light somewhere in there..now that's gone too...I know people will say L and Light didn't care about each other at all..and sure they were enemies..but it is rare..rare to spend quite a lot of time with anyone, even your enemy..and not form some bond with them..even if it is twisted..you will miss them..
In any media, enemies that actually end up killing eachother with no regret... are enemies that have not spend that much time with eachother..humans are just like that.

Am I the only one that thinks this show is too smart for these 2 guys? I was never this lost and confused when I watched Death Note for the first time. Misa clearly said in the last episode that she couldn’t write L’s name because she forgot it, and they’re over questioning why she hasn’t killed him yet, and then they start wondering if Rem will kill Light’s dad when she was shown slowly turning into sand/dying just a few seconds before lol like just what are they watching

I don't really get this episode, can someone shed some light?
Obvious spoiler warning for things happening in this Episode.
Back when Light and Rem first meet, Rem says Light won't be allowed to kill Misa, because Rem wouldn't allow any harm to Misa. Ergo if Light does something that would cause harm to Misa Rem would kill Light.
But in this situation Rem doesn't do that. And Light knows Rem won't do it. I don't get it.
I'd find it much more logical that once Rem figures out Lights plan, she first kills Light and then saves Misa, dying in the process. And because that would be the more expected behaviour Light could never go for this plan, since it would mean his death.
I never understood how Rem despite understanding Lights intentions just let's Light win. With this conclusion it feels like the last 10 episodes were a bit pointless. The same conclusion could've been reached without Light ever giving up his death note and regaining it. This doesn't feel like Light earned the victory over L.
since rem and light’s first meeting, rem comes to understand that misa’s happiness relies on having a life with light. she doesn’t end up killing light to protect misa’s happiness
Because Rem knows that without Light, Misa wouldn't want to live anymore and would commit suicide and the worst thing that could happen for Rem is Misa's death. Obviously Rem doesn't have a guarantee that Light will not kill Misa after Rem's death but she's willing to take her chances.
