"Welcome Back" Michipicoten arrived in Duluth 06/20/2024

- After a near disaster when the Michipicoten hit an unknown submerged object near Isle Royale, the freighter made it way back to Duluth under its own power after spending two weeks in Thunder Bay.
The Michipicoten was escorted to the U.S. border by a Canadian tug and the rest of the way to Duluth by the Helen H.
The Michipicoten will undergo further evaluation and inspection at the Fraser Shipyard in Superior.
This goes to show the bond between boat lovers, people living around the lakes, the vessels themselves and their crews! What a great welcome back for "a wounded warrior." My hats off to all those people who showed up! 👍👍

Mind, it seems like no matter the hour, there's at least one person at the canal bridge, even if 0300 in terrible weather.

At 70 years of age this old girl deserves a good rest for what shes done for the Great lakes she should be saved certainly not scrapped. I'm English fingers crossed she's back up and I'm a welder if I was in the states I'd have loved to help rescue her , regards from Leeds West Yorkshire England 🇬🇧
Trick of it is that there millions of USD tied up in owning such ships, and operating them is a tiny fraction of the cost of building new.
Probably worth remembering, while watching the Duluth videos, iron ore pellets are selling for about US$100/tonne, and what that means for being able to carry 20,000 tonnes of ore for sale.
So good to see the Mitchi last night and what a crowd to welcome her back to the twin ports
The Saginaw going what looks like out of the way to pass her for what could be one final salute, was just amazing to see. Thanks for the video.

I stayed up late to watch and got a little emotional listening to the people cheering as they entered the Canal.

I’m not one to get sentimental about machines, but it is really great to see this boat and the people that sail her back to port safe and sound. Time will tell the future, but she held together, got her load off loaded and like airplane pilots say, “any landing that gets the occupants back on the ground alive is a good landing, even if the plane is a total loss”.

It's great to see she made it into harbor safely...

A good thing there is a dry dock that can fit her on Lake Superior. Imagine how much more complicated it would have been if it was a thousand footer that had this kind of problem.

@@LKK_Gaming.During a routine run either her hull failed or she hit an unknown object that caused a 13 foot hole on the ship. If the Coast Guard or Edwin H Gott had not arrived in time she would’ve definitely sunk. But they were able to rescue her and all of her crew. The question now is if the ship is going to be able to continue running, they made a small patch to the 13 foot hole just for this trip back to Duluth where now they will see if she’s even worth repairing. She is 72 years old so there’s a chance she’s done, hopefully she isn’t!
I have read that the ship may have hit something or is was a stress crack. Do they know which it was??
First reports was that it was a brittle fracture, which is not a good sign for her future. They will know more later after a complete inspection in dry dock. She is an old lady but I hope there is still more life in her!
She was never a beauty, and she stayed too late at the dance.

@@bennetts-revenge_2 - They made beautiful ships before and after her, but she was just industrial heavy equipment. Straight lines like a box with an angle at each end to raise the bow and stern. Adding the unloader and all the structures willy-nilly on the deck complete the look. This was a working ship, not a romantic vessel for exotic adventures.
