Thank you for watching Michael. Great question. First and foremost, smoking. Tugs all used to smell like stale cigarette smoke. Now most boats are smoke free. Some have designated smoking areas. Also diesel fuel. You used to be able to smell the fuel as soon as you stepped onboard. Now with ultra low sulfur fuel (3 to 5 ppm) you don't smell it as much. Great question. CUOTO

We often have fuel barges leave their screws turning for long periods of time while they’re already along side and tied up. As a crane operator it makes it unsafe for cargo operations at times because it moves the ship along side the dock. Moving the ship unexpectedly makes us no longer centered on the hatch. This can be dangerous.
As a crane operator I hope that any tug boat captains reading this try to reduce this as much as possible if container cargo operations are under way.

I remember that stretch. I've transited the kills in a sailing yacht, surveyed multiple barges on both sides, and spent time in P.E. back when we were trying to work out the Bridgeport Container Barge project. My favourite story about the kills came from a Penn Maritime captain, I wish I remembered his name. Ran a boat that became a Kirby pin boat (we did the engineering conversion for pins, done at Feeney--forgetting that boat's name too!). When he was a kid he would skim oil there and actually get money for it, and then he told a story about meeting the owner of Progresso and moving olive oil, darn it I wish I could remember all of that story! Will look for old notes it was hilarious!
We inclined that Tugboat at Feeney on the 2nd of January as I remember--a quick thaw in 2014. Everything was frozen in, and then we rushed over there from Boston area, the ice broke enough, it got to 60 degrees, we set pendulums up, got great numbers in flat calm, then it all started to freeze up again as we finished but they were then able to move, put that study through fast for their COI and it was off to the races. It really is like Rip Van Winkle taps you on the shoulder up there, when it is foggy in the ice like that. Pretty sure she went down to the Arthur Kill and picked up a barge a few days later.

As a former small yacht sailor, I dislike car transporters for another reason altogether. They are so big, tall, and slab-sided that they block all the wind so that you are becalmed right as the bow wave hits you! Well, that and the fact that any large vessel has a correspondingly large wake, so you get bounced around even more than you expect in the normal course of events, and the wake never hits you at the same angle as the seas and swell do, so you get that nasty cross wave corkscrew motion. It is much easier to handle with some wind in your sails though.
That looks like a whole different kind of challenge.

Most enjoyable to see you close up, working where the business gets done. Really enjoyed your narrative and explanations of the how and the why as you manoeuvre. Watching how you backed out of King's Point was very interesting. No problem visualising rudder position and the effects of the port and starboard engines as they are being used thanks to your explanations. Keeping the bow mast centre of shot is much appreciated since it gives an excellent visual reference.
The interplay between you and the Chief was fascinating. I'd love to be able to hear the Chief as plainly as you, maybe mike up his speaker somehow because that would complete the picture of the interplay as the barge is controlled.

I enjoy your channel very much. I was wondering how your work is scheduled. Do you wake up and then learn what you're pushing/towing/moving for the day or is it planned in advance (and you're aware of it)? Do you get a call from the home office (or maybe a printout) of your schedule for the day? I'm unfamiliar with the harbor you work in so this might be a dumb question. Are you on a river or a salt water harbor? How big of a radius (in miles) to you work from you home dock? Do you return to the same dock each night? Do you ever work at night? Don't mean to bog you down with questions. I'm just curious. Thanks for posting!
