    Those computers are underpowered as heck. I had a Lenovo one with similar specs to service and it performed worse than an old LGA 775 Pentium Dual core in both gaming and basic tasks. It literally struggles to play a video in 480p while the Pentium was running it in 1080p

      Definitely agree, opening task manager on this felt abysmal

    I remember that one, a heck of a scam from HP to be honest (adding a layer on my hatred towards HP products). I bought one of these for $10 on the Marketplace, thinking I could do an upper-fixer. Without the AC adapter, it is literary scrap-worthy.

    Companies still sell PCs like that (usually around $300), that doesn’t sound good either as those 2008ish specs + all the bloatware will make for a very sluggish pc. Idk who in their right mind would buy these things today? But I think before Windows 10 2004, Windows was a lighter OS.
    EDIT: $300 for a duel core 2 threaded cpu with 8gb of ram and shitty graphics is one of the biggest scams I know of. Idk who in their right mind in 2024 would buy that? I’m guessing just the ignorant because going used will be a much better bang for the buck in that case.

    I have a Pentium one of these with Windows 10. I swore I wouldn't buy one of these but I got it used for $100. The front USBs didn't work so I put a USB 3 hub on the back one that did work. I use a USB WiFi dongle for internet. Any old school I have a Gateway CRT display running at 1024 x 768. I was pleasantly surprised as the CRT ran 800 x 600 on the computer it came from. The 4 x 3 is a bit funky but shows CZcams videos fine. Windows 11 won't load because of Security function the old CPUs don't support.

    But yeah, mostly they're actually running Mini-ITX parts whichare meant for really tiny cases.

    Hi
    When i was purchasing PC's for work, there were on the bargain shelf.
    They are suited to school kids / elderly and anyone who does use use any performance for a PC
    The rep will advise" it looks the same and gets the job done, and it is only a bit slower" - this is true, but everyone expects more from a PC or the way they degrade with age and how they struggle to use available cpu cycles just on a win 10 / win 11 idle with the next level up in operating system.
    At one stage i chased these second hand as they made OK home servers, fairly silent and low power, the large case keeps them cool as well with a stock PC fan.
    For today, stick linux on it and it will fly
    Regards
    George

    I could see people on a budget buying those. If you don't need an optical drive the case could get a lot smaller. A used NUC depending on the price could be a much better deal. That is despite the fact that NUCs are made with parts you would find inside a laptop, the CPU most notably. I like NUCs because they are very portable. A monitor to use one with is a lot less portable since a lot more care must be taken transporting them or they get permanently damaged.

    I've had an HP PC with this case‚ but the CPU was on a normal ivy bridge socket (lga 1155?!). It was an i3 3470t and I could've replaced it with low W i5 from the same generation. I still have that case and I have modded it a little bit. It is a nice small case and I am using it for a secondary PC. I did the cutout for a GPU and a PSU. Sadly, I can't put the sidepanel because of the power connectors on my RX 580. Though I am planning to keep on modifying this case further more.

    Something really useful, would be how the desklap handles power outages.
    Sure, its not really a good computer due to the specs. And the spinning drive and laptop ram but.
    Picture yourself, working on a college essay. Until suddenly. The power ran out.
    You wouldn't lose anything due to the laptop power supply!

    I thought these were strange and very niche but ultimately decided they probably help to bring computing to the masses who don't understand you can buy something older that performs better. Lack of pcie x16 hits me pretty hard, as I do enjoy the games, yet having onboard wifi is a definite positive. About your RAM upgrade not working? I have ran into compatibility issues with laptop RAM and have found there are speeds, as well as the newer Low Power type that changed things in this area too. LPDDR will come in speeds of 10600, or 12 something, and I've seen others like 1600, which may help actually to bump up the onboard video a little bit, if supported. Have a look at the fine print, I'd learned only a few years ago about the RAM bank size, which changes speed on any desktop or laptop RAM! who knew... Linus Tech Tips is not uninformative. Cheers!

    Man this computer just screamed e-waste even back in 2015. Not worth the time spent to reformat or replace the hard drive of it's previous owner. Even the AC adapter was more useful as a replacement for a compatible laptop.

  • @AnonyDave
    @AnonyDave Před 2 měsíci

    I reckon that's not actually directly from a laptop, but more likely they took parts meant to go in the tiny 1L style chassis and instead stuck it in a much larger one so they could use a 5.25" drive and make it look like it's worth more than it is.

    My household also possess one Asus SFF pc, almost no use at all after more han 6 years or something, I opened the case and found out it has 4gb of ddr4 laptop ram, an i5-7400 cpu and no psu, I decided to use a mining riser and a gtx1050ti colorful with a 1350w mining psu and set up a rig outside and installed another ram, it still suck but the upgrade somewhat pleased me.

    • @Liminal.Headspace
      @Liminal.Headspace Před měsícem

      The only thing that sucks is that mining riser. It's probably X2 and possibly Gen2. You're neutering that 1050Ti to no end.

      @@Liminal.Headspace yeah, at this point its just a hobby to build up a rig from junks anyway, since its trash, I switched the GTX1050ti to a P106-090 mining card and the i5-7400 to a G3900, sometimes use it to play light games only.

    Depends on needs and price. Do not play games or use a heavy workload. It should be fine. Just putting an SSD in should give a huge jump in speed. He is just lazy. You can unplug the DVDs as well and use a cady for more drives. Use an old GEFORCE GT 1030 2GB GDDR5 in mine. Never thought I would buy a Dell but did.
