  • In this tutorial, we will create a composite material consisting of ply-laminate structure using Hypermesh. The process of creating composite materials is explained in detail.
This type of composite materials is widely used in automobile and aerospace industry for design of high performance-low weight components. Hypermesh has many advanced options to create and visualize such composites.

Great explanations on creating the laminate structure. I like how you specified the significance of the element normal, material orientation and ply directions especially when you deal with orthotropic material definitions. You can also set the composite failure criteria (i.e., Tsai-Hill theory) to post-process the result with a scale of 0 to 1. It's unfortunate that the hyperview doesn't support the detailed element representation yet (i.e., shell elements to detailed 3D shape with the specified thicknesses), it would be nice to collect the stress contour for all the plies for comparison. I remember asking about this few years ago to Altair but it doesn't seem to be updated yet.

      @Aeroswap  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks Ken!
Yeah, 2D element post-processing in Hyperview is definitely below par. I wish they roll out a feature by which we can visualize all the plies at the same time in Hyperview.
I would like to discuss more about this failure criteria with you. Will get in touch soon!

      Hi there,
This method of composite modeling creates a bonded laminate from a stack of plies. It cannot predict debonding. It is only applicable to linear analysis, hence no contacts are involved.
      I hope this helps!

As of now, in its standalone state, Optistruct only supports modelling of ply-laminate composites. Fiber reinforced composites are not supported.
However, if you link Altair Multiscale Design Modeler with Optistruct, you can model woven fabrics as well as reinforced polymers!

Hello, Aeroswap. I watch this video and this make me understand the step very clear. Thank you so much for making a good tutorial. But i have a question, if the composite that we use is the woven glass fiber, will the method that we need to create each ply will be different? Because in this video we have one orientation in each ply but woven, there’s 2 orientation in each ply not unidirectional like this tutorial. Do you know how to deal with this? Thank you in advance.

I dont think it is possible to model that in Optistruct. In its standalone state, Optistruct does not support reinforced composite modeling (Only ply-laminates can be created).
To do that, the Multiscale modeler tool needs to be used in link with Optistruct!

    Hi, very good video, thanks!
I have a 2 questions, it will be very hopeful if you can help me with it:
    1. For laminates, you can create a layers of the material defined in property, using HyperLaminate instead of using ply and Laminate. But how to visualise the layers of the material in HyperMesh (like you did in this vide)? If I’m good understanding, this is different approach to create a laminates but I’m not fully understanding it.
    2. I discovered that in new versions of HyperMesh, possible is to create laminates using solid elements. PCOMPLS properties is made for this. Do you know how to properly create the model, consist solid elements and using PCOMPLS properly to set up a composite layers material? And visualise it?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello Aeroswap,
I'm following your exact steps, but I am using Abaqus as my solver (so there is no PCOMPP Property or MAT8 materials). Everything works perfectly fine, I can even visualize all my plies and the fiber orientations. But when I try to solve it in Abaqus it always says that there are element with missing properties, even if there are clearly not because I assign my propertie to all components of my part just as you do in your video. Do you have any workaround for that?
    Best regards, nice videos!

I am not used to working with Abaqus. Most of my work is related to Optistruct. I do not know about the specific difference in modelling of composites for Abaqus.
