- While it's become obvious that traction is the number one issue to overcome with our 5 speed 4.0 XJ, we had no idea how bad it would get after giving it just a minor initial tune.
Any hope of working with the Jeep's original open rear vanished when it literally freewheeled for 400 feet during our latest trip to the dragstrip.

This series with the Jeep is great. It shows that the fundamentals of going quicker apply regardless of ET.
you put a lot of timing , engine can have a detonation...it wii fukup your engine, dragsters only last 1 or two races.
The 4.0l I6 is a legendary engine. I never doubt it.
When I was a teenager my buddies and I were going to buy weed on Christmas Eve in his jeep when it suddenly started to pour smoke out from under the hood just before we got there.
When we got back in it fired up just like normal and never had a problem again.
Jeep 4.0 legendary-ness or a Christmas miracle I'll never know
@@yeahitskimmel Maybe Cheech and Chong were toking up nearby.
My '88 Cherokee had that engine. Loved it!
I had the I6 in a CJ8 Scrambler that only had oil pressure above 2000 RPM's! It still pulled out my friends that got stuck off-road wood cutting!
@@yeahitskimmel it probably overheated lol
And that's why you get your coffee AFTER you fill up rather than leaving the pump running and unattended.
As someone that has been doing ECU tuning on older Honda cars, it is nuts how precise you can be with your ignition timing curve and how much even small changes can make in the way the engine responds. I was riding around with a friend of mine, helping him tune his 1993 Acura Integra that we added VTEC to, and he was complaining about how the engine felt off VTEC. I added just 6 degrees of timing from about 2,000 RPM to about 4,400 RPM (the engine goes into VTEC at 4,500 RPM if the throttle position is above 50%) and suddenly his Integra broke the front tires loose in 2nd gear when he nailed the throttle from about 2,500 RPM, and that change made the VTEC crossover MUCH smoother, which is what I was shooting for. I love tinkering with mechanical distributors, but there is no denying that ECU tuning is nice being able to instantly feel the difference after just clicking a few things.
I still cant get over how good the 2 door 2 wheel drive cherokee looks, stance and everything.
Absolutely perfect and timeless.
is very crap..
I love how the dragster in the other lane was just gone, like shot out of a cannon, while the Jeep was just spinning the tires.
You mean tire, as in one.
That is funny! 😅
@@paul44235 The way the Jeep looks like it squirms I figured both tires were struggling at one point or another
I've had the opportunity to drive an 8 second quarter mile rail dragster with a NA 572 BBC. It's an incredible experience!
It's not even that funny because it was a Funny car 😂 I was expecting like a kia blowing his doors off.
I had looked down at my phone when Tony first made the hit. I thought damn the jeep sounded excellent, but realized it was the dragster lol
Learning is DOING. Not talking. UTG is fun
This is why I love this channel, no fancy paint, no fancy this or that and no bs sponsors. Just down to the earth know how and and FUN.
Love when a build starts to show serious progress
In this day and age of computerized boosted engines, it's great to see a stock configuration NA inline six that can be modified for high performance in a DIY economical manner.
Pound for pound, nothing makes more noise than a secada.
What!?
@@jakeclauson9863 Cicada bugs are what's making the background noise in Tony's video. Kind of a mix of high pitch thrumming and running water. They peak in late spring/early summer every year in North America, but every decade or so, certain species that survive as underground nymphs just explode in population as they metamorphose into their flying adult form, mate, and die.
Two different broods of Cicadas emerged at the same time this year. Last time it happened was 1803.

This series feels like old utg I love it
I’ve been saying for years that these AMC designed six cylinder engines are wayyyy underrated. Lots of torque and the potential for so much more. I know what the relatively stock one in my old Gremlin X was capable of.
I used a possi center section from a late model Dakota in my 97 XJ Easy direct swap. Word of difference in traction👍
Exactly what I'm looking for. Those are the easiest to find
What is a possi?
@@cam509 a positive traction differential can be installed or come in a center section of an axle. So instead of having an open differential which only puts power to the tire with the least amount of traction a posi diff will put traction to both tires connected to that axle.

@@UncleTonysGarage Agreed. Just need to get the power to both wheels. But, even with the factory tracloc, my 99 auto, 3.55 gear could boil the tires starting from a brake stand. These XJs are so much fun! Especially when they are kept somewhat stockish, with minor improvements

What is a posi?
On open rear ends some degree of planting the spinning tire is using the FRONT sway bar to put a little more weight on the side with the spinning tire. If the left rear tire is spinning bend ( heat ) the LEFT end of the UP so the left tire now transfers weight to the slipping tire. Did this all the time on grand American dirt track cars to get drive off the corners.

Spartan lunch box lockers can be had for less than $300, you wouldn’t even have to remove the axle. Super easy, really popular with the off road guys
Very cool Tony...
I love those older cars that are hoping someone comes along and gives the distributor a crank...lol

I bought the banks Auto mind and that gave my Dodge the tune-up it needed correcting my speedometer putting me in the right gear and making more acceleration with less pedal
I don't have the means or the tools to hot rod sadly, I had to cure my tinker addiction with a gas conversion bike. Immediately started modifications carb clean up the cylinder ports and the jackshaft kit so I can have gears. Long story long I still get that feeling when it goes faster. I think too many people think they can't do it because financial it's not about how fast it's about how much faster you make it.
RAMBLER POWER!!!! Lol Lee said it best “If you can find a better car buy it” so he bought AMC 😉
He did get rid of all their cars and trucks and reworked Jeep..Electronics on Jeeps were junk, dont buy a Jeep before 1992 thats when Chrysler finally reworked them.I worked at Chrysler back then.. It could have been 1991 but I believe its 92 one of those cant remember exactly as only Jeep I had was a 98 Grand Cherokee Limited with the Chrysler 360 back in 98 and 2012 6.4 Hemi best Jeeps ever!
The slow timing reduces NoX production at the rpm where the EPA tests.
Taking the weight out of a truck like vehicle might have been counterproductive
Trucks are actuallyprettylight in the rear.
It's why you are better off with a few 100 pounds in the back of a truck in the ice and snow. Helps to keep the back axel in place
I really like watching how The Beast progresses. Keep going.
9:52 this jeep probally has about 230bhp and weighs less than 3k lbs. I came from the turbo subaru world and a stock 02-08 wrx weighs about 3200 lbs and makes 230bhp they run 14 second 1/4's all day and hit 0-60 in mid 5 seconds. this jeep may not sound like much but thats really impressive for what it is!
Sounds great! Really revs now. At first I was like "thats not a 6 cyl" when I heard the dragster in the other lane!
Hey uncle Tony I'm here in Australia. We grew up with 6cyl hemis. Not a real hemi. The 4litre Jeep motors rock. No one here has much faith in them, therefore they are expensive. I love you bro. You're still having fun and pushing hard. RESPECT. I'm about to be homeless here. I'd camp in my swag in your yard just to learn some of your wisdom. Thank you.
Love the dashcam view.
Nicely done!!
That run was great! The shift tire bark was great!
The way to launch a peg legger is to slightly drag the brakes during the launch. Fun fact: with practice you can find the sweet spot of brake drag that will actually have it power both wheels like a locker. Try it, it’s your perfect zero dollar hack/mod.
not as easy to do when you have 3 pedals.....
@@86chrysler5thave It only takes a little practice - think of it like heel toe pedal control control of a manual transmission sports car around a road race. It does take practice and can be awkward depending on pedal designs - and yes, you have to operate the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal at the same time with your right foot. Alternatively you can modify any car with a center pull parking brake control to not engage the ratchet mechanism that locks the parking brake until the release button is pressed. Without the locking ratchet you can experiment to find the optimum amount of parking brake drag needed for a launch. All you are trying to do is to slow down the one spinning wheel so that power can also be sent to the other wheel. Its an old time zero cost drag race modification. Tony is old enough that he should already know about this.
@86Chrysler5thave then use the parking brake. What's next?
@@cjolney Before using your parking brake for launch control you should disable the ratchet locking part - so that as soon as you release pressure on the handle it releases the parking brake. This only works on open differential cars that have parking brakes on the driven wheels, not on the cars like older Mopars that have the parking brake on the transmission output shaft. With a peg leg you can actually get it to react like a tight posi if you can slow down the spinning wheel. With practice you will get a really nice launch. Here are the basics: partially apply the parking brake and launch, releasing after your car has gone 20' to 30'. If you still have a lot of tire spin, then increase your pressure on the parking brake during launch. If you don't have any tire spin on launch then try less pressure on the parking brake to find the sweet spot.
I absolutely love the 4.0L. I had a 92 Wrangler I bought in 1996. I daily drove it until 2018 when I sold it. It had 480k miles on it. I always wanted a better tune, but the SBEC controller was not programmable. At least I couldn’t find anyone that could.
Wow Tony your creating a beast!!!
Eaton true-trac. I have em front and rear. Great diffs and drives like stock.
An antiwrap bar I'd highly suggest. Built many many XJs, this is the only weak point. Axle wrap.
This is so cool! A drag race XJ I've wanted to pursue forever. Work ya know how that goes
Happy Sounds
The gasket was not intended to actually be used with gasoline ;)
12:45 thanks for showing things on a small budget for ppl like me that dont have alot of money to work with
That Jeep sounds angry after the tune! I am way impressed!
A junk yard 4 x 4 XJ should have a sure grip rear end cheap . Put some good used slicks for the back on a separate pair of rims
Stock timing is always extremely low in my opinion. In my 2017 Silverado with 6.0 L96 Vortec engine the stock timing under load for 2000 rpm is 9.47 BTDC and I optimized it at 22 degrees BTDC. Huge difference changing timing! Using 93 octane here.
It's always the best when your gas tank leaks and you fill it up to find out 😮
Tony I think I have a posi for a Dana 35 let me look if it works for you , you can have it for shipping. South Alabama.
Mount a camera under the body aiming towards the rear axle and see what you see.
Ya. That's where those little acrion cameras come in real handy.
I work for one of the major automotive manufacturers up here near Detroit. I work at their proving grounds in R & D. We use those cameras all the time. Not sure off hand what model # they are but, we have wireless remotes for them. Just before ready to run, hit the play button.

@@whatyoumakeofit6635 Yeah, that's it!
Any video camera would work as long as it is mounted securely.....
@DeansofNomadica I got a cheap action cam at walmart. It couldn't take the vibration of being on a 4 wheeler rack, it video was pixelated.
That was on a foreman 400, not a banshee or quadzilla.
OUTSTANDING
I'd put a Powertrax Lock Right on the back and call it a day. Had one on my Suzuki Samurai and it was very streetable. Love this series, and can't wait to see the results.
That’s a nice looking track! I dyno tune 100% stock Harley’s all the time and there is a night and day difference from just doing that.
KS suspension has a reflective heat barrier wrap for the fuel rail that would keep the fuel cooler. They also have the same for the injectors. With all of those things sitting right above the exhaust manifold it has to help with the fuel temp. Not sure how much it would help, but it can't hurt and it shouldn't be real expensive. It's actually a kit that DEI makes for the 4.0 Jeep engine.
Lunch box locker like a lock rite. Cheap and easy to install.
My 95 2wd came with an LSD from the factory and it boogied pretty good with 235/70/15 BfGoodrich TA (this was back in early 2000s). Still spun a quite a bit, but was fun as hell and surprised many, including an S2000 from a roll which didn't come past me until after the needle went past the 85mph speedometer.
call collins brothers in texas...if they don't have it, they know where it is...good mother of god that's a narrow track...firestone indy 500's on tire rack...

Fill the diff up with Cicadas, and it will act like a sure-grip
Yeah that thing is over the top giggle factor 😂
I have a 4WD with an Eaton locker rear. No off road vehicle should be sold with an open diff. I rarely use the 4WD, I just operate the transfer case from time to time to keep it free. A 2WD with a locker is really close to a 4wd with open diffs. - Random stuff, I know.
Yes poisi units helped, but spring work was more important, you build each leaf spring to reduce the problem,, weaker left side recurved leaf's and increased curve on the other side, maybe a snubber (Mopar issue), and it was gold.
Loving this project
Street racing, I had an Impala kick my Mopars ass just about as bad as that dragster.... LOL....
Never forgot it👍👍..
You could weld the spider gears as you are going to get a limited slip soon anyway.
good stuff! a 2wd xj is more uncommon here than xj danna 44. Those Chrysler 8.25 TracLok lsd are dime a dozen in the scrap yards, clutch kit is about 70 bucks. Looking forward to see what that thing can do!

I was COMPLETELY distracted by the dragster to pay any attention to the performance of Mission Improbable. I' am very glad you posted it twice with your explanation.. It sounds like it still is a good daily driver.
In Minnesota you couldn’t even buy the jeep in the first place for 3,000!
It is a 2WD so maybe.
I feel your pain. I have a carb'ed 5.3 Ls with an MSD box. Even with the posi it white smokes the tires anywhere .
That would be vicious with a manual
Sweet! Good news, sounds like you're truly impressed. By the look and sound of it, traction was completely non-existant. Sounded like it spun most of second as hard as first, and didn't really hook till third. Always loved modded six's, torque monsters, but by the sound it winds up quite nicely too. So what gears are you shooting for? I know not radical, so something 3:40-3:70 range? I see a commentor with a set of 3:55's would probably fill the bill nicely. Love 3:55 as a compromise myself, although tall tires 3:70 maybe? Best of luck!
You don't need a stupid high gear ratio for drag racing. Guys swapping 4.11s into their cars are compensating for the lack of power that they don't want to pay to make sufficient. And realistically unless you're sitting on torque converter stall out of the hole they won't benefit you any time. If you can't grip then going to a higher gear will make you grip less. For most cars that aren't complete dogs, a set of gears like that will just make you slower down the track.
If it was four wheel drive, you could've swapped the transfer case out with a 242 transfer case which has the 2WD, 4WD, AWD, neutral, 4WD LOW. The 242 transfer case was a factory option on the XJ. You could always convert it from 2WD to 4WD. Another factory option was a Dana 35 for the rear end, which aren't very strong. It's hard to find but I've seen a factory limited slip in a Dana 35, it was from a 97-01 XJ.
I have the tj's nv3500, the 242, and an Eaton TrueTrac in my 99 2dr SE.
I have a 2001 that is a police package vehicle. It’s a strange combo. It has bigger rear brakes off of a Dakota except 5-lug. It also has a Dana 35 in the rear with a factory Sure-Grip. It has a 242 transfer case. Being a police car it is super plain, no roof rack, and no carpet-rubber floor mat. It runs strong. I’d love to do a tune on it like in this video.

What happened to that dragster in the right lane? Gone off for a leisurely drive through the woods?
Tony I cant beleive the change in the truck, Im seriously impressed. Are the tires all terrains or plain street tires? Im wondering if a good street tire would help? Also would slapper bars help at all? Or your trick using one air shock?
Just keep in mind the spline count on the axles for the 8.25. I want to say before 97 was 27 spline and 97 and newer was 29 spline. 1996 may have been a transition year meaning later where 29 spline. You may buy a whole axle and it don't matter but if you just buy the sure grip by it self beware.
that looks like so much fun....might even need wider tires
I bet my older brother would jump at this project. He's ah ad a few Jeeps with the 4.0 & I bet that Tune' would be killer in a Jeep with an automatic and & limited slip ! ! !
I have a 4.0, auto, shift kit 4:10's in a wrangler that weighs under 2900 lbs with no tops and doors. It has a custom free breathing exhaust so far. I have to see what Tony did.
The 42RE was a notorious gutless wonder without the limited aftermarket. And cross your fingers you don't have the nv247/249.

Tony I've have used a 9 1/4 out of late 90s dodge Dakota pick ups that came with a truck lock in them
find a complete used 8.25 for an XJ 97-01, youll get the trac-lok and an upgrade to 29 spline axles👍 you could do a "free" swap with one of your other XJs if they have a LSD.
The alcohol in thestuff they call gas ruins rubber and plastics.
ROCK N ROLLER
Eaton TrueTrac is the best option for our XJs. I've worn out 3 Auburn LSDs. Oh yeah, since 96 was the bastard year, you better check out how many splines the rear axles have. Early 96s had 27-splines, Late 96s had 29-splines.
luv ya uncle tony....just wish you was a big block chevy dude...the tricks i could learn....
This may have been said I haven't had time to read the comments. But being that it's a five-speed it only has 307 gearing and automatic would have 355 so that would be an easy swap but no limited slip. Another option would be an explorer 97 96ish junkyard axle would come with 373s and limited slip. And if it's a 4x4 you can get the front axle out of a Grand Cherokee zj with 373s, because it had a Dana 30 front axle
You better get another rear to put on the side cause your gonna shell that one
