I feel like he wasn't underrated in the 80's when him (and Genesis) were topping the charts and selling crazy amounts of albums. He even got pretty popular again in the late 90's when he did that Disney movie soundtrack, but nowadays he probably isn't as well known with all the garbage music that's out there.

He is singing LIVE, and he sounds better than pretty much ANY artist today. And he was not considered a particularly outstanding singer back then, good, yes but not great. He was primarily known for being a drummer for Genesis. This ain't no pre-recorded auto-tuned stuff. This is back when all singers had to do was SING. I appreciate his vocal work so much more now. This was one of my favorite songs by him, beautifully performed live here.

I don't see how anyone have not noticed at 2:32, you can see Phil Collins is singing with such intense emotion that he is actually crying when he sings, "But to wait for you, is all I can do and that's what I got to face!" Look at the tears in his eyes. I was shocked because I hadn't noticed it either until last month, as long as I've been watching this video for months. Oh I can hear the tears in his voice near that end but to actually see it, I was shock! I said, " I knew that man was tearing up in his voice when he was singing that part with all that emotion." At age 62 myself, I agree that his music takes you back to a certain time in the late eighties, early nineties like a instant Time Machine and reminds you who you were with and what you were doing when that song use to be played endlessly on the radio. The problem is that Collins had his share of haters since taking over Genesis. A lot Genesis fans thought the band sold out under his leadership when it went to play his mainstream pop music. Several other popular musicians at the time and his music became sort of a joke between them.Then he got a lot of bad press when it was reported he was dogging taxes and divorcing his second wife by fax, that he would call up or confront anyone who gave him bad press and cuss them out. By the early 2000’s a lot of people were just tired of seeing and hearing about him. Since then he’s had a resurgence of popularity it seems. A lot of rap groups have sampled his music in their songs, young kids that don’t remember the original genesis and only remember their mothers singing along to collins pop music when they were toddlers have became fans of his too.
