Lyrics:
Mother doesn't know where love has gone
She says it must be youth that keeps us feeling strong
I see it in her face that's turned to ice
And when she smiles she shows the lines of sacrifice
And now I know what they're saying
As our sun begins to fade
And we made our love on wasteland
And through the barricades - Hudba
I'm so proud to be 50 years old...because I was so privileged to be part of the 80's and the 90's musical revolution...I wish the kids of today could have been there with me...X

Still listening in 2024, one of the best ballads ever sang and written
Tony Hadley is one of the most underrated singers of all time, he has a marvelous voice
You're not wrong
Very true. A considerably better singer than his counterpart Simon Le Bon from their rival Duran Duran
@@007ndc I love Simon's voice as well, but I think that Tony's is slightly better
Alan Ledesma, Tony Hadley could sing the listed ingredients on a cereal box and make it a hit song, just brilliant!!
I've never known him been underrated by anyone.
I am 50 years too and I think the 70 and 80s were brilliant time. We had the best music and TV programmes I feel so sorry for the kids today and my daughter they have just got rubbish. Karen Armitage
😂😂😂 Good thing didn't last 😢😢😢
your problem, you forgot at one point you were "the kids of today" got rubbish??? you truly never ever understood your own generation
Funny, that... My mother said exactly the same about the music of the 50s and 60s and how she felt sorry for my generation and the rubbish we had in the 80s... The reality is, you just got old and bitter
Bellissima canzone e musica.

@@DaveAndBeth1978 Thank you Dave. The music of the 70s and 80s never compared to the 40s and 50s. That's what the generation of that era would say if they were still here. Let each generation live their own story, not yours. Your folks who thought Bowie was a weirdo in the 70s and would rather Matt Monroe from the 50s, let you all decide for yourselves. So let the younger gen do the same.
What an absolute classic .written by gary kemp,as a 53 year ol man from dublin ireland . It brings back so many heart wrenching stories from my country

I'm now 60 and still looking for a time machine to take me back to the magical 80's I would relive them over and over.
Same age, if you find one take me too, fantastic times. I feel sorry for these young divs now!
This song means a lot to me, it's about 2 people falling in love from different sides in the troubles in Ireland, we played this at my father's funeral because he was a farmers son yet the black sheep of the family, my mother was a poachers daughter, the interpretation fits perfectly, my mother was heartbroken when he died, This song means a lot to me.
That's the best thing I've heard in a while. So much love coming from natural mortal enemies. You sound like you have a good old fashioned country family, like me.

Absolutely one of the most beautiful songs of all-time, in my humble opinion.

This is such a poignant reminder of my teenage years growing up in Northern Ireland. I met and fell in love with a guy from the other side of the divide in Northern Ireland. We tried to make it work but my parents like his were very staunch in their beliefs and past history of our wee country. Where Marty came from was a very republican stronghold and it was dangerous for him to date a girl from the other side of the barricades and if caught he no doubt would of got a punishment beating. Unfortunately the relationship couldn't survive on love alone. With the distance between us and the bitterness shown towards two contentious religions we reluctantly parted. To this day its one of my biggest regrets and I often think of him and what he's doing now. I still have a special place in my heart for him and always will 💕
So sorry really.....
What a sad love story you have. 😔
Well written allison..I was born in Belfast and completely understand..very sad this shite still goes on..blessings to you girl..ERIN GO BRAH.

Have to agree as hes my cousin. My son used to do a Tony Hadley tribute show. He sung this song almost as good as Tony, who by the way, is a lovely guy. When at a family gathering at a restaurant he got up and sang Happy birthday to a lady at the next table. Saw Tony at The Stables theatre 2 days after winning Reborn in the USA

Nothing written today comes close to the musical prowess of songs like this. Melodic, emotionally captivating, descriptive, expert musicianship. I couldn't tell you the name of one artist that has stood out for me in the last five years that comes close to the quality of music like this.

Arnaud - My childhood, best time of my life and the world to me was a much better place. Not just nostalgia...
I'm so glad I lived through the 80s. I feel so sorry for the kids today. They have no idea what they missed out on.
Music nowadays is overall so basic.
Mother doesn't know where love has gone
She says it must be youth
That keeps us feeling strong
I see it in her face, that's turned to ice
And when she smiles she shows the lines of sacrifice
And now I know what they're saying
'Cause our sun begins to fade
And we made our love on wasteland
And through the barricades
Father made my history
He fought for what he thought
Would set us somehow free
He taught me what to say in school
I learned it off by heart
But now that's torn in two
And now I know what they're saying
In the music of the parade
We made our love on wasteland
And through the barricades
Born on different sides of life
We feel the same and feel all of this strife
So come to me when I'm asleep
We'll cross the line
And dance upon the street
And now I know what they're saying
There's the drums begin to fade
We made our love on wasteland
And through the barricades
Oh, turn around and I'll be there
Oh, there's a scar through my heart but I'll bare it again
Oh, I thought we were the human race
But we were just another borderline case
And the stars reach down and tell us
There's always one escape
Oh, I don't know where love has gone
And in this trouble land
Desperation keeps us strong
Friday's child is full of soul
With nothing left to lose, there's everything to go
And now I know what they're are saying
It's a terrible beauty we've made
So we make our love on wasteland
And through the barricades
Now I know what they're are saying
As hearts go to their graves
We made our love on wasteland
Oh, and through the barricades
Thank you 🙏
Well done Debbie, I think I love you
I like you too Debbie but chill xx
Powerful lyrics. This was a big UK hit in the weeks leading towards Christmas 1986. Hearing it reminds me firstly of driving hither and thither in the winter time, from my leafy corner of Hertfordshire.

Hi there Emma , I'm 56 , I really hope that in the time lapsed since you posted here, life has become somewhat easier for you and life is treating you more kindly.😊..... However like u I too have come along way and hoping for a little respite from the toils of life so I can push on with my journey and enjoy it to the fullest. Take good care of yourself Emma and know there's many many of us out here all trying to muddle through this unpredictable often messy thing we call life. Beautiful song and an example of where a terrible tragedy, inspires something of incredible timeless beauty.
It is based of course, on a relationship set against the troubles of Northern Ireland, but was inspired by the song's writer Gary Kemp, visiting the grave of "Kidso" and then walking back down.the Falls Road.
"Kidso" was a member of Spandau Ballet's merchandising team who was tragically killed by a soldier on his return to Belfast, after a SB tour had just ended.
A case of someone so creative, being inspired by this senseless waste, that something of incredible depth, beauty, timelessness and pure emotion is created that can be an indelible mark on the troubles past, the living present and the hopeful future.
RIP "Kidso". This will ensure that your memory will live forever.
Well said. It's a powerful memorial to a life needlessly cut short.

By far and away the best song they recorded, in a high-quality back catalogue. The hook from Gary Kemp is genius and the way the tension builds is a masterclass. Then, to top it all, there's Tony Hadley's soaring vocals. That "there's always one escape . . ." gets me every time. CLASSIC.

I learned it off by heart but now that's torn in two
And now I know what they're saying
In the music of the parade
And we made our love on wasteland
And through the barricades
Born on different sides of life
We feel the same and feel all of this strife
So come to me when I'm asleep
We'll cross the lines and dance upon the streets
And now I know what they're saying
As the drums begin to fade
And we made our love on wasteland
And through the barricades
Oh, turn around and I'll be there
Well there's a scar right through my heart but I'll bare it again
Oh, I thought we were the human race
But we were just another borderline case
And the stars reach down and tell us
That there's always one escape
Oh, I don't know where love has gone
And in this troubled land desperation keeps us strong
Friday's child is full of soul
With nothing left to lose, there's everything to go
And now I know what they're saying
It's a terrible beauty we've made
So we make our love on wasteland
And through the barricades
And now I know what they're saying
As our hearts go to their graves
And we made our love on wasteland
And through the barricades
Thank you!
As the drugs begins to fade
Thank you...
I love this song. Thanks for the text. 😊😊
Thank you 🙏 so much for the lyrics ✌️
Tony, you still have one of the best male voices around. The band was and is still superb to listen to, timeless. Thanks for the moments lads.
One of the greatest songs ever written and performed by one of the greatest bands ever
Ti tocca il cuore. Ti catapulta d'incanto indietro agli anni '80.
Nothing BEATS the 80s, when I hear the song of Spandau Ballet, it's like I am in the TIME warp
Tony Hadley's voice sends shivers down my spine. just beautiful.
This is not only a song, but A Masterpiece!
Very true! This is our tribute to the awesome band and the great man Tony: czcams.com/video/2j48HMiU3g8/video.html
"Oh I don't know where love has gone" line gives me chills❤️
Actually, the line is "mother doesn't know where love has gone".
hear until the end... Oh, I don't know where love has gone... ... as our hearts go to their graves... these lines are in my heart forever
@@fhelsper Actually that's at the beginning, I'm at the end🤡
@@fhelsper Why don't you listen to the whole song before chatting shit?
@@marthacunningham2028 Lol I know, they love to try to belittle people😉
Una canzone meravigliosa ❤
I think looking back, the 80s was a great decade for music, fashion, art and writing. It was probably the last decade with originality that has its own separate identity. There were some classic songs and this is definitely one of them.
Jules B yeah I lived through it and was brilliant so many artists up and coming
Jules B indeed
absolutely TRUE
You are so right about that. Spot on!
Jules B so true
As an Irishman this song is very profound. It delves into the innocence of love without race or religion but yet is bounded in the social norms of what Northern Ireland was (or still is to some extent). "We made our love on wastelands...born on different sides of life... so come to me when I'm asleep and we'll cross the lines and dance upon the streets". This refers to the flashpoints and interface areas that divided Protestant and Catholic areas. I was not a native of Belfast or the North of Ireland but regularly passed through and worked there in those times. There was a tension in the air when you see armed men with machine guns..... but still we will cross the lines and dance upon the streets. What poetry for such troubled times and its's true.... there's always one escapes!
A lad I knew when growing up in the north east of England .. Served in Northern Ireland at the time of this song ... He found love there and married an Irish lass . Sadly he died at a young age due to illness but I always think of him when I hear this song .
I think the song is actually based on the period of the troubles in Northern Ireland going by the words, as also around the time this was in the charts I remember our English class reading a book called Through the barricades which was about a young Catholic boy & protestant girl falling into 'forbidden' love in Northern Ireland during the troubles, trying to keep it secret & then the dangers faced when it got out, was a great book, & with my interest in the situation already sparked thanks to U2 by then & my at the time RAF dad being anti Irish gobbing off it lined the way for my love of all things Irish
is that steve owen from eastenders
@@davidwackko693 Yes, Martin Kemp played Steve Owen
@lisbon67 hailhail when will the hatred end. Both sides of the troubles lost a generation to pointless war. Both sides lost combatants and suffered collateral damage. Nobody won. Soldiers do not murder people they follow orders but when politicians who do order it get it wrong the soldier is the fall guy. Perhaps the Irish situation might like to be put on ice as in my time it's been rather pointless to have different Christian denominations fighting while our soldiers and police . British and Garde have both been dying at the hands of Al quieda daresh is etc.
My father and cousin were killed in the conflict note the word killed. I hold no grudge on my father it was a war zone he knew that. Still wish he had not had his brain blown out. My cousin now that is a bit more difficult to forgive he was killed after the good Friday agreement but I'm trying.
So many memories wrapped around this song...Glad I was part of that wonderful journey, so many of us here, wooo wooo😍😆🙅♂🙅🧔♀🙍Have a good life guys, don't get dragged down by the silliness of the present time, but only get the best of it, you can still find some good in it.
Great comments enjoy
I can't tell you how beautiful this song is. I did 4 tours in Northern Ireland between 1977 and 1988 and lost personal friends in units I served with and many other colleagues from other units - The Cheshire Regiment, Parachute Regiment, Light Infantry to name but a few - yet never hated the Republican movement and still don't. Whenever I get melancholy, especially around Remembrance Sunday time, this is one of my go to songs. I honestly don't think Tony Hadley knew at the time of writing this song just how powerful the lyrics are for those of us from both sides who suffered during the troubles. My friend Ted - an Irish Republican living in the UK - has said to me many times 'we shouldn't be friends Dave', but we are and I think that's a great message to send to people who think their differences are irreconcilable, Ted and I wouldn't have been friends during the times I served in the Province, but we are now and that's a great message to send. To my friends who lost their lives - Smudge Smith, Paul 'Cas' Cassisdy RIP - and those others badly wounded and maimed, I will always remember you, even if the twat politicians don't.
How could 2200 people give this a thumbs down ? Tony Hadley has a pure gold voice.
220 only if I dare to say.

In August 2020 they are already 3000. Unbelievable. How can it be possible...?
They are all tone deaf.
Sad people who have never loved or been loved, that or they are on drugs.
I had heard this song a handful of times over 20 years, but never really took much notice of it. One night a year ago, I had a dream where I for some unknown reason had decided it was the most beautiful song ever written. I of course watched it many times on YT the next day, and was proven correct. My subconscious had obviously figured it out long before I did :)
It's an honor to see this video,now i am 50 yrs.old...reminiscing those days...when i was still young...
Muy linda canción.
Possibly one of the best love songs of my generation 😘
It's not about love, it's about the problems in northern Ireland..
@@markoshaughessy4392 its about two people who fell in love from the other community Catholic and Protestant from the North of Ireland buddy

I bought Tony Hadley a drink in the Porterhouse in Dublin the night he played the Olympia. Going back about 17 yrs I think. Nice guy. We had a decent chat.
Fuck me what a sweet memory for you especially in these times with the porterhouse shut
