Its 1989. I'm 14 years old, sitting in front of the radio 10'o clock at night, waiting for them to play this song so I can record it. Its 2024, I'm 48, this song popped up on my playlist as I was sitting and finishing up some tricky coding. Its 10'o clock. My son just came to say goodnight, he's 14. Full circle. This song is still as good as the first time I heard it.

well said, man. Well said. this is life.
My Grandfather was from Belfast .. We played this for him at his funeral .. I tear up everytime I hear this .. RIP Grandad !
You're Granddad was absolutely touched from what you did for him, heartgoing
Class song Christian to pick for your grandfather 👍
I hear you
Respect ✊
What a fantastic tribute to play This song for someone from Belfast .
Wow. Just wow. Completely forgot how much of an exquisitely crafted and performed masterpiece this is. Puts 99% of modern music to absolute shame.
Oh for sure. Lyrically and musically superb. Although the 80's had a huge amount of shite music, at least there was room for something this good to breathe. Listening to the music of today, I fail to see how a track like this would get off the ground, never mind reaching escape velocity.
@@JohnPreston888 It's unlikely it would get off the ground. It wouldn't be seen as being commercially viable.
@@JimSting Hence, " Listening to the music of today [...]".
Trevor Horn's production is elite tier..... just stunning.
It would be difficult to find an equally emotive piece of music. Truly iconic.
I'm a Belfast child, I born in 1971 and it is my birthday today. When I was born there was bomb let off near the hospital that shattered the windows of where my mum was.... Now... things are different. Decades upon decades change the face of the world. Sometime for the better, sometime for the worse.
Belated happy birthday.

НИКАД ВИШЕ БОМБЕ,ИСТО СМО БОМБАРДОВАВАНИ ОД НАТО 1999!Hello from Serbia for Belfast Child IRELAND
No caso da Irlanda foi pra melhor, nessa época havia o conflito entre católicos e protestantes! São Paulo, capital Brasil!
Please, move to me
I feel every word of this song. i was born in N. Ireland, as a child growing up it was such a dark dark time, i want people to fully understand the great sadness and pain that time was, the good friday agreement brought a kind of peace, but when i look at some today playing with peace it makes me sick. I dont care any more about the whole orange and green thing, most people just want to live in peace with there neighbour. People think it will never go back to those dark times, but beleive me it could. Belfast to this day has so called peace walls every where, until those are not needed i think thats the true turning point. N Ireland has come a long long way, but some just want to play games with that hard won peace, i remember all the lives lost, well over 3,500 everyone of those lives must never be forgotten, i truely hope the clock never goes back.
Thank you for the moving and informative comment . just wanted to ask, when you refer to "people playing with peace", might brexit have something to do with that? Or is there a chance that Ireland could reunite? . . . or am I just a dreamer?
@@ichhasseamerika Hi Bob. Brexit just sets things back, i think borders are mostly in peoples minds, some day the whole of Ireland will be one again, but it will only come about by peaceful means. Small groups will still try to get there point across by bombs and guns, but only brigs more pain and hate. The teens today in N Ireland get along far better and they are the hope, i think once all the old so called leaders are gone the better, i say that about both sides.
@Jason Kearney Very true words Jason, i always think most borders are in peoples minds.
@Jason Kearney yes very true, you are right the next generations will be the real hope, as i see from my nephews and neices they just want to get on with they lives, people togather regardless if your orange or green, moveing forward togather in peace.
I hope we dont ever return to those dark days. I spent 2 years during the troubles in NI. Spent time in every county. Lost friends there, and years later we are still losing our friends. #peace
I’m from Belfast, this song means so much to me, now that there is peace.
Hello from Serbia💫Ова песма ме подсећа на моје детињство...I love Simple Minds😇
My Grandfather was born in Scotland but he always felt Irish cause his father was born in County Tyrone.

If you ever wanted an example of how music can paint lucid, powerful images in your mind, and make you feel as if you're actually there, it's this song. 34 years on, it remains an absolute masterpiece.
Belfast here. Correct.
We are all here...
It pierces the heart,
Does the Belfast child sing again?
I think they do, at least I hope they do.
Absolutely

Incredible song and haunting melody. You should watch the You Tube version with Sinead O'Connor
Where do u stay on a visit to this incredible city?

Not many artists would go down that road in the 90s jim you did great song and thanks you'll be remembered forever in Ireland for this one🇮🇪🏴
I'm 27 and grew up with my dad playing SM. Never knew what this song meant at the time but it hits hard knowing now. Always have love for my Irish cousins🏴🤝🇮🇪
ok but the song is BELFAST. Thats Northern Ireland. #GAWA
i remember this one.
As I get older, I find so many of the songs I 'just liked' when I was younger turn out to be earthmovingly epic masterpieces. Case in point: Belfast Child.
I don't think we realised how spoilt for choice we were...

So proud of Jim Kerr & Simple Minds…
Now at 65 years old , listening to Belfast Child . Wow … masterclass , unique wisdom , poetry in every word… 🏆🎻
❤
I'm two years younger than Jim.i still love him to bits
Beautiful song,I buried my first son, the year this was released, always reminds me of him.im seeing simple minds next year for the 3rd time.i love them and it's always emotional
Saw these guys in Glasgow last week and to say I cried when he sang this is an understatement. Such a powerful song.
I'm 63 years old and I'm Portuguese 🇵🇹.Ireland is full of beautiful music and musicians.I love this country for its history.❤

I'm hearing you, Jen. An Aussie guy here 1963 vintage. My DNA is more Irish than anything else and proud I am. Those were magical times. The best of times. An era of music that will live forever. 😎
Yes Gary the 80s for me the best times of my life.
I'm 56 too. Nothing like the 80s!
We were brave. We were hopeful. We knew darkness, but chose to remain in the light.
@@jenniferjones188 Yes but as a child of the same era, we were naive to the reality of the situation. Their greatness is that they did this and were the anthem of The Breakfast Club.. They spoke to everyone of that time. Proper legends. Personally I blank out much of the 80's due to my poor hair choices.
This track shows what Simple Minds is all about.
Charlie's bass in this is thunderous.
Jim’s incredible performance still makes my eyes wet.. What a song, timeless.
You know, one of the best things about being in my 50's now is that I lived my teenage years in the 80's..........Priceless and I wouldn't change them for the world!

Irish people are the salt of the earth wonderful folk and very hospitable
@@richardtattersall647 salt of the earth that cant agree on anything
Irish ☘️ always miss home it’s in there blood and soul.
My Dads family are Scots, Mum's Irish Catholic. This song is a masterpiece. It makes me cry .Truly beautiful. I was brought up on Celtic music. The subject matter is sad , poignant, but has hope.A great Scots band singing about the so terrible troubles in Northern Ireland.
The minds need to be honest here with the origins of the song they ripped off
This was during the troubles. Unity in Belfast for all children🎉🎉🎉🎉
All we can do is pray. My grandson made friends of the opposite religion and got beat up for that....he was only 13😢
This song remains the best example I know of turning a traditional folk melody into something new and wonderful, that still completely respects the original tune. It's a classy touch that the song begins with the line "When my love said to me...", echoing She Moved Through the Fair's opening line "My young love said to me...".
Born in 66. This fantastic song is 31 years old and I can remember every single word. I can't remember what I had for tea on Friday night! The overriding power of music and well written lyrics. And how many of you like minded feel the same? Don't you just love 80's music ❤️❤️
Simply effortlessly brilliant I'm 54 and come back constantly to this epic era
Born in 66 as well...i think we've lived in the best time...70's and 80's...mis it...

This Simple minds song Belfast child is a masterpiece I had not listened to this wonderful song for years and I cried from a 59 years old Irishman fan
You are not old if your Soul still love this Masterpiece 💎
Well i`m now 75 and still think this is the bestvideo/song ever.
Don't forget "All i want is you" from U2.
I grew up in this town...my town...i walked and played on that same hill where the boy and girl are shown running when I too was young... it was a happy place to grow up...even now I can be easily reduced to tears as I watch this wonderful video...and reflect on the tragedy that unfolded in that beautiful place....may such things NEVER be repeated in Ireland...land of enchantment and inspiration...my land.
Your comment is incredibly intense full of unspoken incidents and emotions that I'm certain I should know about but sadly, I do not. I only know that Ireland is a place of beauty, of the land and the people. ( I'm Irish myself, not connected to my roots, but look with longing to these place and its people in some ways, perhaps feel their sorrows and simple joys.
A beautiful song... I wish they'd write one about the Palestinian child
I not live in Ireland but your country is beautitul and like me very much
What a masterpiece of emotions! I'm almost in tears and I'm not Irish!
ys, i think so Too
I am English and it tears me up every time
Knob
neither were Simple Minds
Simple Minds are a Scottish group I think. The song (based on She Moved Through The Fair - an Irish folk song) is about the troubles in Ireland, and so impacts on other nationalities. Plus the haunting melody and story behind words, would pull on the heartstrings
Words legitimately don't exist to describe how powerful this song is. Goosebumps. Every time
Soul in written notes, eternal music….todays music has no soul….this masterpiece is pure soul 🙏🏻💝
Some day...the Belfast Child ... will sing again...it is light ... driving away the darkness...Freedom for humanity... The old dream of mankind...
One day we'll return here when the Belfast Child sings again

Gut
I think most songs have harmony, and lyrics the melody is from an old folk song. So not great a poor cover if anything
Simple minds are not a poor man's U2 they were great band in their own right. Always been a little underrated in my opinion like The Cult. Fantastic bands
Were? They still are, still making albums and touring 40 years on, longevity proves class.
Simple minds are Scottish and brilliant unlike bono. Big up the Scottish.🏴🏴

This song is calling for peace!
One of the most powerful and beautiful songs ever written. Very melancholic but hair raising. I grew up in Ireland. The Troubles still haunt Irish souls to this day, both north and south of the border.
I'm from Brazil.
I always remember the conflicting situations in Ireland and it made me very sad.
I am fifty years old today and listening to this song it seems like it was yesterday.
Strength and honor to all Irish people !!!
One of the best song ever written.
Not one ov the best song ever written. It is the best song ov all time
Back in 1989 this masterpiece received little credit. Yet not only it stood the test of time, it grew with it!
No.1 in the UK and Ireland, and top 10 across Europe, suggests it did indeed get credit then as it does now.
🇸🇪
Only briefly appeared on the top 40 in Australia
Arguably it came from Simple Minds' greatest album, Street Fighting Years
I left Belfast at 7 years of age in 1971 to live in Australia, been back once in 91, this song reminds me of where I was born
Michael Scott Hi are you happy to live in Oz?
Fantastic city. Great character. May the day arrive when neither nationality nor religious persuasion be a defining character.
My family left in 1967( my Dad said he couldn't stand what he knew was coming). I went back in 2017 and thoroughly enjoyed my visit. Long may peace reign.
I wish new generations would listen to this music and appreciate it more because this music had sense, a message, whilst nowadays you don't even know what you're listening to. I'm born in '94 and haven't had a chance to actually be there, at that time when this song was made and times when Ireland was engulfed by riots and wars but I can feel it through these songs and this pain is so realistic, I sometimes wish I was there at that time, trying to do something good, make a change. And I'm not even from out there, I'm from Serbia, but my heart always belonged in Ireland. I don't know why, but I felt that, even when I was 5 years old and didn't know what a country was. I hope I'll finally get a chance to visit it someday.
Maybe you had a past life in Ireland. I really believe in those things. I hope you will go there one day.
Thank you!
Well that's what I think about some times. I have freckles and everything, and there were some Celtic tribes living on the teritories of Serbia a long ago. So maybe I have some Celtic ancestors. Who knows? :)
You could make a "Family Finder Testing", your DNA gets tested and you can discover your ancestry, and make connections with other matches who have the same ancestry. Maybe you find distand cousins who go back to your same Irish ancestors. I made this testing at www.ftDNA.com two years ago, and it is a hot crime ;-)
Well i was born in 2000 and im from germany and i love this Song
Almost certainly, I would say.
If that is you in your pic, you look more than a bit Irish.
Everything Is perfect: music, lyrics, video and Lisa Germano's violin.
When my love said to me
Meet me down by the gallow tree
For it's sad news I bring
About this old town and all that it's offering
Some say troubles abound
Some day soon they're gonna pull the old town down
One day we'll return here
When the Belfast Child sings again
Brothers, sisters, where are you now?
As I look for you right through the crowd
All my life here I've spent
With my faith in God the Church and the Government
But there's sadness abound
Some day soon they're gonna pull the old town down
One day we'll return here
When the Belfast Child sings again
When the Belfast Child sings again
So come back Billy, won't you come on home?
Come back Mary, you've been away so long
The streets are empty, and your mother's gone
The girls are crying, it's been oh so long
And your father's calling, come on home
Won't you come on home, won't you come on home?
You might also like
Come back people, you've been gone a while
And the war is raging, through the Emerald Isle
That's flesh and blood man, that's flesh and blood
All the girls are crying but all's not lost
The streets are empty, the streets are cold
Won't you come on home, won't you come on home?
The streets are empty
Life goes on
One day we'll return here
When the Belfast Child sings again

To me, this song is an amazing testament of hard times for many back in the day in this area of our world. Brought to light by an amazing talented band. The story profound, the black and white video adds a contrast onto the band as they show footage of past times. Music should always be this good because craftsmanship like this no longer exists so keep this one very close to your heart! Brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it.

No I cant, but I also cant imagine Simple Minds rapping to Stronger lol. Kanye has done a lot of great music as a rapper and/or producer.
It's not theirs it was adapted by them, the melody is a traditional song - 'She moved through the fair'
