@@philippebernard9291 indeed it is
@@philippebernard9291 Just bear in mind Phil is a DRUMMER not a pianist.
And he still pulled it off. No computer bs to recover it or autotune.
@@SuzyQ334 Hello. How are you doing?
No auto tune, no mixing, just a man, his piano and his pure voice
I think he is a bore.To try to make Live aid about him and then be upstaged completely by Freddie was pure justice
how did he try to make it about him you douche
Billy Joel claimed the reason he didn't do Live Aid is he had no band at that time and he didn't think one guy at a piano could hold a stadium's attention. I wonder what he thought when he saw Mr. Collins annihilating in Phil-adelphia.
What has happpened meanwhile?
Good job rehashing the top comment.
Life without smart phones. Crowd simply njoying the music, the moment.
No fake fog, fireworks, lasers. Just a guy, towel, water and a piano. All it took. This is a real artist.
and cool as they come. Talented matter back then.
Artur Garncarz they had lasers, but you cant see them, but only at nighttime at wembley.
“Just take all look at me now”
He's GREAT !!!!
And no freakin autotune! We don't have any real artist like Phil anymore
When he missed that one key and grinned, I was soo grateful to know he is human just like the rest of us. Bravo Sir Collins! We'll remember this forever!
The excitement and uniqueness of a live performance, what an epic solo.
It's OK, we all know his fingers were tired from grooming that mullet.

vocals wise, absolutely. He nailed it.
Phil makes a mistake at 1:06, shakes his head and smiles and carries on. A true legend. That's how greatness is achieved. When you screw up, shrug it off, smile, and keep pushing.
Phil didn't make any "mistake at 1:06" ... the piano was out of tune. Elton John cracked a joke about it; Freddie Mercury cracked a joke about it.

@Susannah: Yes, it was a mistake. Phil's joked about it in interviews many times, the bum note heard around the world. It happens...he's still great!
When he cracked that little smile when he hit the wrong key was priceless! Phil could do no wrong while performing, we just love him way too much!
Doesn't even sound like a wrong key. 😍

I like when he smiles at his little piano mistake....
He didn't make a mistake, there was a problem with the piano.
@@Hondadctrider no he really made a mistake (which can happen to anyone). If there had been a problem with the piano, the problem would have happened again and Phil would not have continued.
I'm a drummer since the mid 1980s and we all make a LOT of mistakes, most of you in the audience you don't even notice. I can tell you i wish i could play piano too! Phil is great
That mistake and his reaction make the entire video, for me.
I love the song regardless, but his performance is that much more earnest for it.
In fact, this is my favorite rendition of the song, due to the emotion Phil imparts. And the mistake is part of it, to me.
@@avantesma1 As i said we as musican's always make mistakes, most the time you people in the audience don't notice, that was a big mistake but Phil is primarily a drummer but plays piano very well. Try and sing and play drums or piano or guitar at the same time, it's really not as easy as many think, or don't give it a thought. Try this...tap your hand as a snare drum and your foot as the bass drum and sing any song you like. . 😉

40 years after, and this song is still giving me bumps.....

Dang someone’s paying attention. 😂
This is such a great performance and my favorite part is before when he thanks everyone and the world, sort of shivers at the thought, then delivers a brilliant performance.
First time watching this video and I noticed him laugh it off and just be like I know I’m the shit. I’m allowed to make mistakes just shut up and listen

01:05 wrong note!!! loved that smile after...
Wasn’t a wrong note as such, it was in a key where all the black notes are played and his fingers must’ve been sweaty and slipped off on to the white one
Yes, a perfect wrong note for a perfect song.
Not a wrong note asshole the piano
Accidentally hit the wrong key. I played the piano growing up, this is not a difficult arrangement to play at all, when we mess up we aren't supposed to give it away by making a face. Its virtually impossible to play the piano and sing and never make a mistake. But this arrangement really was on the beginner/intermediate level of piano playing, he must have been very nervous. His singing was on par though no mistakes there.
Cozette M in his autobiography he said he was so sweaty that his hand slipped off the key causing the mishap.
Hard to believe he was a drummer and never intended on becoming a singer. Glad he did. So much timeless music. Soundtrack to so many lives 🥰
Yes I gave ya a like for the comment. I'm pretty sure he learned piano at a young age. Long before drums. He performs sitting down now a day singing is all he's got left!!
nonsense, he was always a singer in Genesis before he became lead singer, he did backing vocals on all tracks and also lead vocals on one early track
That is by far the hardest part to believe about Phil Collins. That he might've never been a singer and soundtracked many of our childhoods if he stayed just a drummer.
Tenía yo 7 años apenas pero e crecido escuchando a estas leyendas musicales que nunca volverán
All I was saying is that I'm pretty sure he learned piano before drums and singing. All though being young he probably didn't realize how good of a singer he would become
I'm an 80's kid as well and for him to make a mistake and then smile and continue speaks volumes about how talented he is. By far, one of my favorites of his next to " In the Air Tonight " !! His music is truly timeless!!!
Yep 👍
yeah before he started he mumbled "let's see if I can get through this" ... he knew he wasn't a lock on the piano. He had that one small flub and then was good for the rest of the song. really it just legitimizes the whole performance it was very good.
This always brings a tear to my eye. It's so truthful and honest. It comes out of his toes. A true classic.
In tears now
The fact that he hit the wrong key makes this performance even better for me. He smiled it off gracefully and rocked it. 100% human heart
Genius
Put the 'live' in Live Aid. Owns it with class and fun.
Of course.......absoluty!!!!!
Phil didn't "hit the wrong key". The piano was out of tune. All the musicians commented on it, including Freddie Mercury.
@@SuzyQ334 He played an arpeggio in a part when the original recording has a chord played softly a few times. That´s the mistake. I could be wrong but I don´t hear anything off key in his whole performance.

There's something honest about Phil Collins music. It comes from his heart.
Phil collins is the best artist a can hear on the radio.
At 1:04, Phil Collins makes a mistake, but honestly I point this out because this is what I miss about music. The HUMAN aspect behind it where it shows that the imperfections are what make music great. I’d be more worried honestly if Phil was a robot playing it perfect everytime rather than making a mistake like everyone else. Music is meant to be played from the heart no matter if you make a mistake. Mistakes are what make real music authentic and true and relatable to all of us because it shows how close we all really are. Everyone makes mistakes and it’s what makes every art form or even anything more relatable from person to person rather than having a computer program doing all the work for you. Just pure talent and soul.

I love his smile and him shaking his head when he messes up the piano. The inner rage he felt for a second I felt in my soul
He misses a key early on, cringes & smiles, then powers through with a voice that elevates nostalgia like every strand of hair at the back of my neck. Beautiful songwriter, tremendous performer. Live-Aid may be the best live music event since Woodstock . . .
an awesome performance. Check out Patti Boyd Harrison's autobiography. She explains why he was not on his "A" game and why Clapton played the angriest version of Layla she had ever heard. They were all hopped up and hung over after partying at clapton's all night. It was a mad party mad at wives/gf/exs.
He wrote about this in his autobiography. Sweaty hands made his fingers slip on the keys and hit a clam early on. That aside, the rest of the performance, and his stellar voice, kills it.
Hell of a voice for a drummer.
John Black remember watching this with my now wife Phil and queen were the best performers on the day 👌🏻👌🏻🎥🎥
I love the fact that he grazes that wrong note (I call that jazz..lol)....it makes the performance that much more human. Benjamin Orr (The Cars) makes a few gaffs on the bass-as well as lyrics, in "Just What I Needed" and I actually look forward to them. As a keyboardist in a band, I like seeing that, "yeah....we all have little hiccups". It shows that we're not machines!
Who else is listening 2019. I just love this song it never gets old.
Margareth179 this song was a part of my childhood, so much so that I took it for granted as one of those cheesy 80s tunes. But listening to this again in my 40s I’m struck by how great it is, it’s been haunting me since rediscovering it a few days ago.

Yes. To be fair though he looked bloody terrified and I don't blame him.
Probably one of the few musicians these days who comes close is Theo Katzman of Vulfpeck but unfortunately, despite the talent, has nowhere near such star attention (jazz not pop)
Back in the days when in order to be a famous singer you actually needed to know how to sing .
people like ariana grande, lady gaga and miley cyrus actually know how to sing. they just sing songs with no vocal range because pop music makes money. they've done one off songs or one off albums where they sing more difficult songs well.

Tried to do what I thought was right. Yet still wasn't enough. Then last year at end of March. I had to leave them in Canada. I was only on a visitor's pass. Even though I was dual. But with the boarder closing. We didn't want to have me lose my job. I left hoping it wasn't going to last. But it did. And now I'm still blamed for things I wasn't able to control. Told that me leaving was the best that happened to her. Even though there were years of happiness. I miss my children and the ones I helped raise.
@@GalthT hope as far as kids it will turn around
If Peter Gabriel hadn't left Genesis, we may never have known that Phil was anything more then a drummer. Sing it Phil!
dumbass comment !
@@RobertTaylorGreatfunshop The guy says it as the truth man. We may have never had some major great hits like this if Peter remained with Genesis in 1975/Post Lamb lies down on broadway.
One of the greatest pieces of music that I will remember for the rest of my life. They don't make music like this anymore. The years of my youth are beautiful!!!!
Phil Collins is the best ! Song writer / singer and drummer I love every single song he plays and watching him live would be so magical and amazing I can wish for miracles can’t I ? L❤❤❤love this man !!!!!!!!
My Mother was pregnant with me at Live Aid. She said I was kicking her nonstop during this performance.
👍👍💕💕..😄
@@christinapettersson2334 no you didn't listen it
Brian, I was there that day with my Brother. We were 19 at the time. Brilliant day! Couldn't believe that I got tickets for it 🤗 anyway, great show, to say the least!
❤❤❤❤❤

Probably kicking against all odds to be fair ....
Phil Collins, a true natural musician. Don't have many like him today.
Don't have any today not many.
Performer's today could not hold a candle to guy's like Phil and other back in the day
I was 35 days old when this was sung. I love Phil Collins!
the little smile when he hits a wrong note . even still , what a performance , sheer class!
to all Gen Z, don't let this music die
1:05 he misses the note but keeps on going like the absolute legend he is. Sir Phil Collins, thank you for gracing this earth with your music and talent!
When you learn to play an instrument that's one if the first things you've been told. When performing in front of people keep going no matter what.
I admire him for that because it was a bad note, I heard it from toilet 2 rooms away when it was first on TV.
@@jevoulaispasdecompte Exactly. My daughters have danced professionally and if the music stops or if they stumble, you just keep going like nothing happened.
It doesnt sound wrong though. Has some kind of blues feel to it xD
This is real talent, from an amazing musician. This is how its done.
This dear man is at the end of his life now. I will only watch when he was at the height of his career. I can't watch him in the present. It's just too painful. This was one of his best tracks ever.
A voice and a piano playing his own song, all live, all true, natural talent. Understood young “talent” shows “singers”?
I'd be honored if some Phil Collins/80s fans would check out my acoustic piano & vocal covers of AGAINST ALL ODDS and ENGLISHMAN IN NEW YORK by Sting on my channel in tribute to the masters. Live acoustic with no autotune. Thanks and peace.
I always forget how good he is! Very honest voice!
right, genius
Pure talent! This is music!
Unbelievable voice and song ❤
I'm 44 years old and this is my first time hearing this version 😄 What a voice!
You really missed out pal! I remember this like yesterday. Phil hopped on a concord after this performance and flew to the United States. What a great time to be an adult back then.
First time you. First time me! 🤯
I just heard this for the first time too and I turned 44 two months ago when you posted this! A great moment in time. Love Phil Collins!
Same. I’m 40 and have seen Queen’s performance since I was a kid but never this gem.
Was never really a big Phil Collins fan but I cried the first time I heard this.
I’ve watched it about 50 times since then. 😂
Me too! Goosebumps
