Have you ever come across an oddly stretched image on the sidewalk, only to find that it looks remarkably realistic if you stand in exactly the right spot? These sidewalk illusions employ a technique called anamorphosis - a special case of perspective art where artists represent 3D views on 2D surfaces. So how is it done? Fumiko Futamura traces the history and mathematics of perspective.

Honestly, more teachers should. These are great.
Lol ahahahah. For real. I couldn't imagine having to explain this in the best way I know how .
I like how everytime at the end of the video they say a philosophical speech lol

"If you're ever walking down the street"
Woaw you target a very specific public here
Everyday when you’re walking down the street
And I say HEY! What a wonderful kind of day when you can learn to work and play
And get along with each other

Really cool demo of how some of the amazing '3-d' art that you see out there actually works! It is surprising to me how some people see math and art as opposites when in reality they have so many things in common: creativity, passion, originality.
patrickJMT cool man.
Patrick, I love how you're active on CZcams.
patrickJMT We have a 3-D chalk festival every year here in southwestern Florida. I was always super amazed that there was so many people who could tell they were drawing in 3-D while being on the ground creating it. Well, this video just took all the magic right out of. I will still go through because it is really cool.
patrickJMT uhhh no...? Just no.
I agree
Whoever did that animation needs an award, I hope they know that that he/she did an AMAZING job
Another reason why Leonardo da Vinci is a very special genius.
i always had a problem understanding this , but now i understand, i love watching these videos
Why does that purple guy keep fainting? 😂
LotionSquad623 well, wouldn't you have a heart attack too if you thought that someone was stuck on a tiny piece of land in the middle of a giant hole in the ground?
Guess He Saw An Animatronic Or Somethin'

I've seen people doing these drawings apparently free hand... I swear they're art wizards
That moment when you study arts and still have a math class
no subject can get away from math i guess
@@oldcowbb lollll

best video yet hope they cover more of the fine details in art

The painting of Mona Lisa by *Leonado Da Vinci* is a best example of this!!!!
I think the most mysterious thing existing in the universe.
Beautiful! I never find art this interesting before.

they use a projector !!!! omg I thought they worked it out on the fly lmao. suddenly this is a lot less impressive
Prince Blake some do.
Well they still need to do the coloring to help it
Math can open new perspectives quite literally.
With a name like Fumiko Futamura you know they are a genius
Great video, now i know how artists did it !, thanks Ted Ed !
It'd be really cool if someone made a game using anamorphosis to create unique platforming
A whole new woooorld
A new fantastic point of view
Ted-Ed videos can make any topic interesting.
thanks for the advice
why didnt you posted this earlier i needed this for my exams 😭😭😭
Very interesting and worthwhile video.
Cool! I love being subbed to this channel ❤
That projector trick though... that's slick.
wow this is amazing!
Love art :D
Perspective drawing is difficult if your straight up free handing it though... like extremely difficult...
excellent
sensacional!
Fumiko Futurama?

Cloe Jarozenski lo, futurama I have never watched that show before
Calm down Cloe.
Aww.
I thought i was the only one who saw it
sweet video!
Make more riddle videos plzzzzzzzzzz
i want to create an art piece that combines every compatible technique, for example an anamorphosic piece that is also a picture that is perceived from being made up of many different objects, then make it out fo UV/ glow in the dark invisible paint, and also put it into the art piece where you put a reflecting cylinder into a certain spot on the paper on a table, and you can see a portrait of a man.
Muito bom!
i love drawing perspective drawings
beautiful
Amazing video
The skull thingy really works. Wow
Very helpful
a cool modern example: the Toronto Raptors basketball team used to design their baseline art work so that the words appear to pop out from the angle of the main camera broadcasting the game.
Now imagine doing that but for it to be visible from multiple angles or even better: you see different things from different angles. I would pay to see that
that is possible with multiple colours and those old 3d glasses with the red and blue i wonder if they can make that in other colours...
When you try to learn art and you come to know that you have to study complex Mathematics.
Ahh!!!!
Painful
there are at least ten ppl claiming that they are here first. I'll be honest.. I'm number118
I'm number 62066
How are you 62066 while I am only 62065 and commenting under your comment?
How do you even know that ur number 118?
Amazing... Thanks for information..... Really nice... 💕💕💕💕💕🙏🙏🙏
This reminds me of finding the QR codes in the first Watch Dogs then finding the right angle to scan them. Frustrating but fun!
When I saw the Al Hazen book I was like, "Fuck yeah my boi, Al Hazen!"
Wow Amazing!! I like IT!♥
Well that's one way of looking at things.
1:36 if you have captions, it looks like a phallic shape.
I know it's a lot more complex and expensive, but you could also use a camera and goggles that lets you see through the camera's eyes. Seems nifty to me.
that is sooo cool
meet Brusspup!King of this art :)
Wait there are 3,500 views on this vid after seconds
which software did you use to create this awesome video

basically it teach us how to use the grid properly :D
I was hoping to see dry and bender.
The real question is, can we draw a 4D thing in 3D?
Chair
A "4D thing" is a mathematical concept with (per our current knowledge) no connection to the real life.
So Tromp L'oeils?
I found impossible triangle! 4:32
Im suprised the greeks didnt also invent illusions? Surely they came up with everything as you always mention in your videos?

I love science
One could say it is a matter of... perspective?...
I'll see myself out 👋
so that's what happened to Baldi in his office!
huh, makes sense!
All that and no mention of Esher.
Wait, so if you can simply project your image right on to the sidewalk, why bother drawing it ? :D
Art Work c because you can't just draw it like you'll normally would. It destroys the 3d effect.
Well, I think da Vinci was primarily left handed.....
