In Islamic culture, geometric design is everywhere: you can find it in mosques, madrasas, palaces, and private homes. And despite the remarkable complexity of these designs, they can be created with just a compass to draw circles and a ruler to make lines within them. Eric Broug covers the basics of geometric Islamic design.

there was a non believing old woman who needed help carrying her items. A man came to help. She praised him for his help and during their walk she warned him about Muhammed, calling him a lier and a man who destroys families by poisoning the younger generation and the woman with the belief of one God. At the end she asked him what was is name. He answered "Muhammed" at that very moment she said her shahadah and became a muslim. This is a man who rarely sought justice through violent means. A man who forgave his enemies. When he enter the city of Mecca with his giant and strong army. He declared that there will be no blood spilt. He even gave protection to the members of the house of Abu Sufyan, where Hind lived. Hind was the woman who had Hamza killed. Hamza was one of Muhammad's most favorite uncles. He was one of the first really important and well respected men of Mecca to convert to Islam back in its early years.

I came to Madina (holy city for muslim beside Mecca) and saw a magnificent pattern of geometry inside the Mosque of Nabawi. It was 3 p.m and the roof was open automatically and warm sunlight hits every one and the wall which contains beautiful geometry pattern. That beauty still left me wandering.
I live there, not only the mosques have the geometry even my home I see it everywhere

Well i unexpectedly found one
I suppose they prefer answering in other comments in order to deminish the chances for the uploader to see their hate comment and delete it. Also when time passing most channels have uploaded newer videos and there is little chance to go back in an old video of theirs so professional trolls are just waiting for time to pass.

As a Christian, I love this. Mathematics is a language from God. Muslims understood this very early on. Their wisdom and faith is beautiful to witness. Their incredible contributions to Science, Math, and Art are without question 🙏🏻🙌🏻💪🏻

@107191668785794772299 necessity for religion keep coming in cycles just like when old buildings need scaffolding for their repair. a society without religion feel they are progressing at first but things spiral out of control relatively fast. this is why various religions came again and again throughout history and repaired the collapsed societies back up before being forgotten again.

@Faith. That was the whole point of this video. Those geometric patterns the narrator drew on paper have all been created in stone in magnificent structures like the Alhanbra.
You should watch the Met museums video of their Moroccan court construction - its amazing, they get master craftsmen from Morocco to make it who use the only techniques. Truly insightful and beautiful

The Cute Kitty - The time in which this art was originally produced was when early Islam was actually one of the most scientifically progressive places on earth. But this was all thrown aside as fundamentalism was introduced, the main face of Islam these days unfortunately. Maybe if the people are reminded of their history, this could change.

It’s fascinating to know how they managed to achieve this level of geometric complexity at that time, and on massive scale. Therefore, I find the clip offensively simplistic. In Islamic art, these designs were a medium of meditation in the geometry of nature, which leads to the praise and show of gratitude for the creator, the original designer, Allah\God.

I always admired these at my masjid and loved to follow the patterns in the ceiling and cabinets
The reason why Muslim artists turned to geometry in expressing themselves is the need for keeping the faith monotheistic( in the Islamic sense that god cannot be contained in any form or shape and that he cannot be defined>> anything that is limited cannot be worshiped). Muslims also stopped drawing prominent persons in the religion so people would not turn into idealizing them and worshiping them. These patterns all have meanings though. Some say that certain patterns refer to the story of creation and even certain personalities. It's quite interesting

I was in a team of student graphic designers during my study in Islamic high school. There was one school event where all the designs should be islamic-themed, and I tried do do five-fold tessellation (and I didn't know it was called tessellation too back then)
And yes, I never expect it was hard to tessellate five-fold patterns so I went back to four-fold patterns lmao. However, later on the end of my study, I finally able to make five-fold one as basic background texture for my friend's self-handwritten Quran cover. I didn't make one for me because I never finished writing my copy of Quran by that time.

This was when Muslims lived in just societies, they got the real meaning of Islam, to worship god through building the earth and making it a better place, but now because of the dictatorships in most Islamic countries, all is there is people fighting for their very basic rights like having food and a safe place to sleep in. These regimes made people ignorant and angry and extreme. They forgot the higher goals of life.

I feel like any time Islam is mentioned in the title or the video, even if the video is about something as innocuous as design, there's going to be a bunch of people who have decided they want to talk about the religion itself.

These patterns are still so alive in Iran . Even if you don't choose a major close we still learn some basics at art classes in junior high

Last year I've visited Andalucia, and there I saw quite a lot of these patterns on many old buildings.
They are truly amazing once you see them repeated hundreds or even thousand times on walls, domes etc.

That's amazing how 'hard' disciplines, such as Math, are linked to creativity. Many people tend to think that artistic expression is nothing but the artist's intuition and imagination but one actually needs a solid base of hard discipline education un order to apply their creativity
I'm Muslim and whenever I visit my family in Tunisia or go to a Mosque I see those amazing patterns, I think to myself that those are really complicated, but I learned in this video that all you need is a compass and a ruler. And now I also know that this is a 1000-year-old tradition. Also, the word "Masada" means school in Arabic.

It looks easy in this video but it actually takes years for students to learn how to create these patterns. They also had to paint them with pleasing colors in mosques, palaces etc. Be patient fam.

Good video. It's good to watch this from scientific viewpoint and socio-cultural viewpoint, which in this case is Islamic culture. Those who see terrorism as a sole representation of Islam as a whole are just ignorant and love hating too much.
@@RPF3 nobody said Islamic scholars invented geometry itself. What's being said here is that Islamic culture uses complex geometrical patterns for artistic decoration in architecture, which is quite unique.

Not really, in my country Indonesia there is a madrasah... many of Indonesian are Muslim but we are united even if we not have the same religion.

When i was only 8 i was introduced to a compus and to make a flower at school. I loved it. And very quickly made several intrecate neat patterns. I love the geometrical designs so relaxing

One reason geometric art became popular because Islam discourage picture of living creature (in 2D and more in 3D), especially in religious matter, opposite with Christianity.
So true because creature with soul or animate creatures are closer to idolatry or iconography. And Islam TOTALLY and STRICTLY FORBID any form of idolatry
So we can’t draw portraits of humans in Islam? I have been drawing portraits like realistic portraits. Specialised in them so is it really not allowed in Islam? Should I stop drawing them even tho it’ll mean the end of my field and I will have to move to other artworks :) so pls explain if I can draw faces or not.

There are many views regarding realistic art in Islam, as a Muslim Artist I fall into this conversation a lot, my opinion (which you should never take as a religious Fatwah) is that Art makes the world a beautiful place and a religion as beautiful and peaceful as Islam probably wouldn't stop such a soul fulfilling thing.
I've read some Muslim leaders and Sahabas left the art from other empires untouched and didn't damage it, indicating they're okay with it, while others argue that you shouldn't represent living creatures in any form, so I would repeat what I said about asking a well educated, respectful scholar (Sheikh) who'd help you with such a intellectual religious matter.

Laith Jebreel I’ll do that. I have been asking around a lot and many seem to think that it’s better to lean on the safe side and avoid human faces and try to shift to still life and oil paintings and calligraphy. So I might stick to that for now and wait until I get proper answer regarding faces and I’ll continue them if It’s allowed and I had this intuition to stop them like I didn’t feel like working on them suddnely since I started praying “don’t make me do anything that might make you angry and only help me do the tasks that involves your blessings and happiness” so inshallah I’ll find an answer soon :)

Inside an old mosque in Cairo, filled was similar fascinating art a Sufi friend once told me that Adam was just one, but from him came so many of us, through harmony with one another, through repetition, interaction, acceptance, embracement and coexistence we could become beautifully different and coherent just as the wall we were standing in front of.

Excellent introduction to the ingenious geometry found in much Islamic art.
It baffles me how they got these patterns right bc on a computer you gotta run a program that copy pastes/repeats this pattern to get them exactly right and proportioned, so imagine how hard this wouldve been back then when all you had was paint and skill

In İslam everything in universe is created for humans to solve and see the beauty of,mathematic and geometry are one of them.

I'm very interested in geometry and I love the art style of your previous civilization. I also love how they contribute to modern mathmatics. Even today, we still use arabic numerals.
Study sacred Geometry and Cymatics. Both explain Geometric patterns which create our Universe.

Andalusians, Umayyad Empire, Abbasids, Seljuk Empire and Ottomans...they symbolized the creativity, knowledge and the soul of Islam all over the Old Continents.
I am proud to be a part of this as a Turkish and a Muslim. However, these issues are never discussed in today's education system. We are removed from our own values and culture. Regardless of your nationality, embrace your own culture.
My house is embellished with these designes.
In muslim culture, we use them to decorate marble, sheets, carpets, divans and even clothes.
I'm so proud that we still preserve such a beautifully eye satisfying art!! :'D
