Building the Moroccan Court

- In 2011, The Metropolitan Museum of Art opened the New Galleries for the Art of the Arab Lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and Later South Asia, which house the Museum's renowned collection of Islamic art. A vital part of the installation was the Patti Cadby Birch Court, a Moroccan court built by a team of experts-from curators and historians to designers and craftsmen-over many months. Complementing the works on view, which span the past fourteen hundred years, the Moroccan Court provides an experience of space and architecture while demonstrating artistic traditions that still thrive in the Islamic world.
This video documents a marvelous journey from Fez to New York, and the creation of a twenty-first-century court using traditional fifteenth-century methods.
The court was made possible by the Patti and Everett B. Birch Foundation.

As an Architect, i pay great respect to these craftsmen.
its almost a spiritual experience for me to just following their every stroke..
I always have to thank them for keeping the art alive.....
i am a hindu from india, i think this art is very creative with high level geometry understanding. hats off
For me too... and I'm NOT an architect.
How do you like being an architect? I'm stuck between that and civil engineering
I pay little respect for people who sentenced them to a life they didn't choose, not giving them a chance to receive education and follow their dreams.
This. This is what I would spend millions on if I had them. I feel like crying of how wonderful this is.

There are 40000 traditional craftsmen in Fez alone? That's incredible, to still have that many people well versed in the traditional ways.
Yes! Moroccan craftmanship goes beyond what is shown on this video. Many materials are touched by magical hands and turned into small masterpieces. Like wool for rugs (over 60 types in Morocco) or blankets, metal for lamps and doors , wood for furniture and doors, clay for dishware and decor, leather for homeware and fashion ... Handmade items are all over Morocco ❤

This isn't Arabic at all. This is Andalusi architecture invented by Iberian Muslims, with small influences from Persia. If you really look at it from a historical and architectural point of view it is much more Roman and Gothic in nature than it is Arabic or Middle Eastern in general. This is a style that developed in Muslim Spain. Even the typical horseshoe arch that you see in this type of architecture was implemented by the goths who converted to Islam. Many columns that were used in their buildings were Corinthians(Greek) columns, until later they developed their own styles and design of columns.
Morocco and Muslim Spain have been one country in history for a long time (Almoravid and AlMohads), so this is how some of the influence came into morocco. On top of that, Most of the Muslims of the Iberian peninsuela that fled the persecution from the Christians went to Morocco and brought their Architecture, Music, dialect, etc... with them. And that's why you'll only see authentic Andalusi cultural legacies such as music or architecture in Morocco(and Spain) and nowhere else. Not even in other places where some Andalusi refugees have fled to in smaller numbers.
I can keep on going, but this architecture isn't Arabic AT ALL. Like, literally the only Arabic influence on this architecture is the Arabic calligraphy. So, get your Arab arrogance and nationalism and throw it in the garbage bin. Morocco has been a place of many great nations either from outside or from within, with a great history, beautiful and rich culture and great diversity. So, no need to be looking down on Morocco my friend. And yes, I say this as a proud (not arrogant) Moroccan.

Such amazing talents keeping their traditions. Its great to see
