  • In this week's Backyard FAQ, Subscriber Richard asks "is it possible to give a tutorial on snare drum tuning?"
Getting a good pipe band snare drum sound doesn't have to be difficult if you follow a few simple guidelines and take your time. This detailed video will show you how to replace a top and bottom head, check your top snares, replace and set your bottom snares and how to bring both heads down to a point where you can get a good sound. This video was made with the Premier HTS 700 snare drum but the concepts in the video apply to Andante and Pearl drums as well.
Normally I like to do the Backyard FAQ videos in the backyard but it was too hot freakin' hot yesterday!

There is no need to worry about the broken head when taking it off but gradually take it off becuase you can warp the rim but also thanks for the helpful video

Citinggoose thanks for the comment and yes, you are correct! As long as the head is removed carefully the drum should be fine.

On the top we use Andante Core-tec Elite Kevlar heads but on the bottom we use Mylar heads for better snare response.
