- Nintendo is known for its cheerful gameplay that is very child friendly and often plays it safe in regards to their storylines. However, there have been plenty of times where things have turned dark, and a lot of our favorite Nintendo characters actually have dark, sad, and tragic pasts. Here are the top 5 saddest origin stories in Nintendo history!

What about Link? He lost his parents to the Hylian Civil War in The Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time. His mother, fatally injured, took him to the Kokiri Forest entrusted the Deku Tree to take care of him.
On the more tragic villain side, the Three Mage Sisters suffered arguably the most tragic backstories in the Kirby series. All three of them started out as normal girls, environmental disasters struck, one suffocated by fire, one trapped in a blizzard, and one… after everything she held dear died… rather than living on a survivor’s guilt… she desperately climbed a tower to allow lightning to take her life… attempted suicide. All 3 girls at the brink of death, but hope was not lost. Hyness granted them the powers of the very elements that nearly ended their lives. Since then, they followed Hyness humbly. The future seemed brighter for these girls and the benevolent priest… until… sometime after resolving a galactic crisis, Hyness came into contact with the Jamba Heart, the essence of the god of darkness, Void Termina. Hyness’s very being turned twisted and corrupted to the point of insanity. Because of this, Hyness spread the dark influence upon his 3 disciples and soon began to perform unholy rituals to awaken the Void. The Ancients, fearing of their wrongdoings and power, intervened and stopped Hyness before the rituals can be completed. Instead of execution, they were to be spared and sealed away until the time will come for one to purify their souls. At a cost, any and all memory of them were erased. Eons have passed… Their time had come…
Hyness attempted to perform the rituals again, but the ritual went awry when the Jamba Heart shattered. Its pieces scattered across the universe. Kirby, given the power of the Friend Heart, is able to triumphantly overpower the twisted beings of the Sisters and Hyness, and defeated Void Termina once and for all. But the Void’s hold Hyness and the Mage Sisters didn’t end. The Sisters, now fully succumbed to Void’s influence, are bent on the deaths of Kirby and his allies. After a fierce battle, Kirby is triumphant, and by kindness, uses his full-powered Friend Heart, and at long last, purified the Three Mage Sisters and Hyness. Their wrongs now amended, Hyness and the Mage Sisters have settled to redeemed lives.
Near-death from exposure, corrupted to commit sins, sealed away for eons beyond counting, released under evil’s grip, succumbed to pure darkness, until at last in the blink of an eye, their very souls embraced the righteous light for the first time in uncounted millennia.
I cannot tell if their backstories come even close to tragedy…

Lucas’ end story is even more tragic after pulling the last needle, cause once that seventh needle is pulled, all of Armageddon just rains Hell on Earth, basically destroying all life in a terrifying blaze. With no extra sequel to the mother series and we’re just left with “End?”

The fact that Lucas could’ve simply stopped Claus but let him go avenge his mom anyways makes it even harder for him.
And seeing how the world he once knew and loved was being turned into some dystopian nightmare must’ve been pretty rough for him as well.
And on top of that Lucas couldn’t spend much time with his dad Flint until Lucas started his big adventure.
...and he saw how Porky was laughing at Lucas realizing his brother was brainwashed all along and turned into muted emotionless servant of evil. It's actually terrifying how Lucas started LAUGHING when Porky was coughing and having problems with health... it shows that Lucas could've turned into the monster like Porky from being kind, timid and shy kid.
Those Lumas literally snatched themselves a mom (permanently) by taking a clueless girl to go with them. 😂
That Rosalina one almost Made me sad😢😭
That actually got me tearing up for a bit. Also, the mewtwo one got me to remember “The Ultimate Enemy Episode” from Danny Phantom a little bit. Nice video.

We all talk about how much pain Fox lived… but we never mention my boy, Falco, while his life wasn’t very better! His home planet, Zoness, got severely polluted by Andross and his army. While we never learn what happened to his parents, it’s likely his mother and/or his father died protecting their little bird… their son. Later, he leaded a team, including his girlfriend of the time, Katt. But later, Falco broke up with her and left the team, because he had enough to always have to save her. (At the same time, she sometimes gets abducted on purpose just so Falco can rescue her.) He then joined the Team Star Fox and one day… he returned on Zoness with his friends during the Lylat Wars, and saw the results of what Andross has done. Falco was shocked, disgusted and extremely sad to see the planet’s state. While he tempered normally in the rest of the mission, seeing Zoness in this horrific state certainly gave Falco an emotional scar in his heart… as someone who cares deeply about the environment, I understand Falco perfectly. I still feel this emotional pain... This is horrible.

This video has endgame story spoilers for mother 3. If that matters. Title is a little misleading because for Lucas they tell both the beginning and the end of his tale. Played through that game recently. it’s a great game
6:18 I didn’t see this part in the original movie but I saw the Netflix version of it and it was good. His backstory was bad, MewTwo had it rough.
I noticed in the fire emblem series that they like to kill the main character's parents as well

I’m surprised Edelgard from Fire Emblem 3 houses isn’t here, the girl literally saw all her siblings die from horrible experiments, and she barely survived herself. She got mutilated and because of those events got her lifespan incredibly shortened. Idk to me that sounds like an even more hardcore version of what Mewtwo experienced.

I mean I don't think it was Nintendo's plan to make Mewtwo that way considering yes the pokémon games are only released on Nintendo platforms other than the occasional phone game, but the fact is pokémon is owned by a different company. Even so this was an awesome video of tragic origins though

It reminds me that Sm4sh was my first introduction to Fox and Falco. I thought they were two normal animals risking their lives to defend their homeworld against the one responsible for Fox’s father’s death. Little did I know…
Samus was 3 yrs old, had a mother and father, lived on the neighboring planet to zebes, K2L, a Afloraltite (pretty much "spice") mining planet one day a group of Avian-humanoid life forms (Chozo) land and attempt to barter some of the Afloraltite. Chief Aran turns them away. A short while after, the mining operation was raided by the space pirates and their leader Ridley. The pirates were demanded to kill everyone first and "collect the spoils later" Ridley approaches the young Samus, as she attempts to turn the beast away. In an instant Chief Aran shoots one of the engines of the space pirate vessel, causing it to fall on top of the Pirate King Ridley. Samus was the only one to survive, a short time after that the Chozo who had previously visited returned after the notice of a distress signal. They adopted Samus, took her to a new home, Zebes, infusing the DNA of the Chozo Warchief, Raven Beak, to give her immeasurable resistance to the harsh planet, and prowess for battle, she was trained as a warrior, and had even witnessed the creation of the Metroids, a peaceful creature artificially created and controlled by the chozo and their DNA, for the extermination of the parasitic organism we now know as X, as well as the Mother Brain AI made by the chozo. Mother Brain had created a Chozodian suit, fit for the woman Samus had now become. By the time she was 18, she had enrolled in the Galactic Federation Army, and served under the Commanding Officer: Adam Malcovich. After a dreaded accident involving Adam's brother, Samus resigns from the Federation, to become a freelance bounty hunter, her first mission: Exterminate the Metroids of planet Zebes and destroy the Mother Brain AI life form that controls them.

I’m surprised that they didn’t even think of paper Mario a different version of Mario who in each story has friends that try to help but when it comes down to it at the end of the story they usually all k*ll themselves for the good of the world. In some of them they sometimes come back. In others like origami king they never come back, and the toad who made them didn’t want to even attempt to help bring the origami princess back.

Theory: Why the Luma was so depressed and wanted to die because he had no family. Remember, there was no Rosalina with the Luma, and Rosalina's origin is meeting a Luma who landed on earth. The Luma just wanted to go home but that wasn't possible in the movie because he never met Rosalina yet. He had no one. No one came for him which resulted in him getting depressed and wanting to end his own life because of it.

It doesn't end there.
Still before the events of the games.
After she leaves her second home, Zebes, it gets invaded by the space pirates. The Galactic Federation is unable to send immediate help So Samus and her squadmates go AWOL so Samus can save her adoptive Chozo family. But re-encounters Ridley the sight of him triggers her trauma, Ridley, upon finding out who Samus is, GLOATS about having (potentially) eating her parents corpses to survive to her. Grey Voice, the DNA doner of her chozo blood infusion and trainer, makes a sacrifice that gets him killed by Ridley so Samus and Co make their escaped. Not to mention betrayed by Mother Brain (who help raise her).
Samus lost BOTH her homeworlds and families to the aptly named "cunning God of Death".

Funny how you say that they are know for their kid friendly and E for everyone games when they have plenty of games that weren’t rated E. Most of the Metroid games are rated T, Smash Brawl is rated T, All the Xenoblade Chronicles games are rated T, there’s a couple T rated Zelda games, T rated Fire Emblem games, etc.
