I once missed a flight due to a delayed metro at a certain stop, plus I also assumed responsibility for having printed only the electronic ticket when I was supposed to print the boarding pass as well.
Got into waiting line for the following day at 7AM and then finally took the designated flight.
Now with the existance of Uber, online check-in, anticipated arrival to be at the front of the luggage claim line and being properly informed of the boarding gate approach procedures, getting ready to board is not hard anymore.

The reason passengers get upset is because the airline waits too long to explain in detail exactly what's going on... Like you did in this video... Good job!... If efforts were taken to explain things like slots, weather, mechanical problems, etc, along with descriptions of what is being done in real time and what to expect and why, then passengers would have a better understanding and feel less neglected. The 'need to know' is a very strong aspect of being human and needs to be accommodated by the airline. By any business that deals with the public and their time.

yes!!!! if the plane hasn't even taken off from the previous airport at the time we should be BOARDING they obvs knew about it hours earlier. i understand things happen but i would like to know. for instance my last flight was 3 hours delayed and if the airline could let us know those things i could have dropped my child off at school myself and had more time with them before having to leave. and this happens allllll the time from the airport we leave from.

Lately we had some traffic controller strikes or at least disruptive service in Belgium. Simple reason was that because of governmental budget cuts over the last years there aren't simply enough controllers. The controllers get paid a lot, but they didn't get any day of from their legal holidays. Just imagine you can't go on holiday with your family for several years because they don't invest in new recruits. I'd also not show up at work if my employer neglects my holiday rights. And the last thing you want is to have frustrated ATC controlling the safety of thousands of people up in the sky. That's just disaster waiting to happen.

Also, i want to highlight that some airlines have heaps more money at their disposal (Emirates, for instance) that they can afford leaving 2 A380 at Melbourne airport parked for a few hours without worrying too much. Some other airlines, most of them actually, have tight schedules and one issue in the morning can mean several delays throughout the day.

Thank you so much for another fantastic video :) . The parking spot example is a great example that applied to my recent flight from Charlotte to Orlando. I remembered on my boarding pass it said the flight was supposed to board at gate B4. I got to B4 15 minutes early and noone was around. Then I learned the gate changed to B 11, and then finally I learned the plane landed and parked at gate D11 . Of course my fellow passengers on the flight were ticked because we had to run through the atrium, and then run through concourse D to get to our gate, but I knew that day there was a good reason. I am always amazed at how the ATC folks manage so many planes at once. Same goes for the ramp agents for the embraer planes I flew on. I learned that my carry on luggage would not fit in the overhead bin, but I knew it was in good hands so I just let them take care of it :). I don’t get a chance to fly that often, but when I do, I make sure they know they’re appreciated :) .

Many years ago I was at BWI late one stormy, snowy night staring anxiously out a gate seating area window. I looked down and noticed a uniformed man in a flight uniform and hat with a flashlight carefully inspecting each tire and brake line, climbing up into each wheel well, scrutinizing every structure he could find for nearly 15 minutes in the freezing cold wind and sleet. No one else saw him, but I did. When he finally finished, he was covered in snow and was probably chilled to the bone. As far as I am concerned, he is a hero. I knew he was serious about safety, and I felt at peace during the ensuing turbulent, stormy flight to TPA. Pilots, like doctors, are trained, and know their business. Part of our ticket price is paying for their knowledge, and ability to keep us safe. Whenever I get annoyed at flight delays, I always think about that pilot in the snowstorm, and accept what has to be. I am also thankful for pilots like that US Air officer that snowy night.

To ensure on/time departures I have had to literally drag passengers out of duty free shops, reprimand parents who get hysterical because their small kids disappeared at boarding times, refused passengers at check in because they wanted to travel to Europe /from the US, thinking their driving licence would suffice as identification, bring a passenger black coffee to sober him out because he s had on to many at the departure area bar and the list goes on and on and on....

Yeah I was kinda thrown off by that as well... no way they make more money than pilots. Not cool at all. If Joe says ATC's make enough money and then contradicts it with pilot's strikes, he'd better explain why. I don't really know but something tells me that the ATCs went on strike not because of money but because of understaffing and long shifts... just a hunch. While pilots, again AFAIK, are only getting their hours of flight reduced every month (80) while retaining the same salary which is just high, period. So.. sorry pilots, I have no sympathy for you. But maybe Joe can remedy that.

I work in an airport lounge for a big Aussie airline and last year we had a couple of days of hell when weather issues meant Sydney airport run on a single Runway for most of the afternoon and then was shut completely for a good hour at least. Believe me, that was not fun at all for everyone. Most of the time delays just happen and it's no one's fault so don't get cranky at staff cause they can't often do much at all and there are procedures in place to ensure safety is the first word that comes up in a checklist before anything can happen. Well done for the video, Joe.

I was surprised KLM offers so many flights with 30 min layover while they only reschedule your second flight if the first one was more than 90min delayed. To be fair I flew with them, I had a 3h layover in Amsterdam and both flights arrived 15 min early.

I think you forgot to mention 'operational reasons' Captain :). I am a former employee of airport ground operation and I can clearly say most of the delays occur because of Airline ITSELF. Poor crew planning particularly when flight crew unnecessarily changing aircrafts that delays to start boarding... poor schedule planning set by airlines that put enormous pressure to the ground handling companies and airports, this also makes impossible to be airborne on time even after push back... waiting transfer passengers and luggages from other aircrafts so on and on... Last but not least, I would put 'non-operational request from flight crew' forefront as a delay reason especially 'urgent smoking necessity' at outside of aircraft between flight legs. These are cannot be told to passengers as a delay reason obivously if you want to find airport in one piece :p. Just announce ' dear passengers, our flight is delayed because of the operational reasons for 30 minutes' and that's it

As a business traveler flying out of and into Newark airport in NJ, I've gotten used to asking the gate attendant or the flight attendant "what is our wheels up time?". The reason is the departure time on a boarding pass is only the time the aircraft will back away from the gate. If everything is running on time in Newark (highly UNLIKELY), then the wheels up time will be shortly after the departure time. However, if there are delays (highly LIKELY), the wheels up time could be hours after the departure time and the airlines will still board and depart (sometimes because the gate is needed for other arriving aircraft). This goes hand-in-hand with the "slots" Captain Joe is speaking about.

I used to be a rampy at two airports in Florida. Just to put a smile back on the faces of my front line coworkers I used to make sure that unreasonable passengers had just a little more frustration during their trip.
I would routinely open a suitcase and place it upside down on the baggage claim belt so when it was picked up the contents would spill out. (Yes, that meant I had to pop a zipper now and then or break a lock. But hey, it happened during the flight when there was some turbulence....)
Other times when I worked small planes and people would see me putting their bags on the plane, I would wait until they were all boarded and the door closed and then I would take their bag out of the plane and put it on the next flight. Yes, I would tell the pilot that something fell off my belt like my walkie talkie.
But the one thing that I really wish I would have done with the single worst passenger I had ever come across was that I wanted to remove all identification from their bag and put an LAX tag on it and toss it into the conveyor belt maze below the airport. It would have gone to LAX, sat somewhere for a little while and with no identification it would have been disposed of. And at that time (early 90's) I heard that they were simply incinerating unmarked bags that were not claimed within a short period of time.
It was kind of a backwards industry at that time from what I saw. The way to make my day better was to make a passengers day worse. But only if that person deserved it.

The air travel experience is quite stressful from the time of booking right through to leaving the arrival airport. It’s long, very complex and often unpredictable for all concerned. Personal attacks on front line staff is just wrong - no exceptions. I do however wish that the front line staff had a better info feed out of the system and were supported more by their management.

ATC makes a LOT more than some pilots.
Then again, I was a rampy and I was making more than some of the pilots I worked with. Yikes! I counted my 2 hour commute on my time card.
When the boss told me not to do it, I said that I would simply back out that much time from my actual work time to allow for 40 hours including travel. The two ladies working the counter had to get the first flight out....customs declarations, baggage, fuel and marshalling. They called the boss and let him have it. He called me afterward and said that if he ever got another call like that from the two ladies, I was fired. I told him that the way to make sure it didn't happen was to let me go back to what I was doing. He relented. Automatic 20 hours of overtime ever week.
That is why I made more than some of the pilots.
The one who I could never beat in pay was the one who showed the owner of the airline (little island hopper airline) his most recent tattoo, he got a $1,500 per month raise. The pilot had the company's logo tattooed on his arm.
