  • A day in the life of an Orthodontist.
    This week I was asked a few times what's life like for an Orthodontist. Although I don't think every orthodontist has the exact same schedule you can see here what an average day is like.
    In this video you can see we go over consults, your typical monthly adjustments, removing braces, and just overall daily schedule.
    As always if you have anything else you would like me to cover please comment below and I will absolutely answer your questions.

I havetaken all these dual Enrollment classes and Ap classes for a major in bio so I can become a doctor, but I’m unsure if this is really what I want to do. I was told doctors work a lot of barely get to see friends or family and I didn’t want that happening to me. Orthodontist has had good reviews but I’m not sure if I want to become one because I heard it’s a lot of responsibility. You have to open up your own shop and buy all these materials for it, hire the people to work for you and I’m not sure if I’ll be ready to do all that . Hey Nathan!
    I am thinking about becoming an orthodontist, and I have a question. How many years of schooling do you need to become an orthodontist, what is the starting salary, and if you were to start you own practice, would you be comfortable with actually getting paid? How does that work? And directly after school, can you start your own practice or do you work at another clinic. I know these are a lot of questions, but I saw in another comment that you go in at about 10 and leave at 6.Compared to the other types of doctors I've been looking at, that's pretty good. I was thinking about becoming a surgeon but the 6 am arrival time blew me off. I would not cope with that. So I would really appreciate if you answered my questions, and great video!

    • @ThriveDentist
      @ThriveDentist  Pƙed 4 lety +4

      Hey Jef, it took me 12 years to become an Orthodontist but you could maybe do it in 10 or 11 years. It's definitely a lot of schooling but well worth it. Most people work for another office for a few years (or maybe forever) until they feel comfortable starting their own office. Owning an office is definitely not for everyone but I love it. Surgeons have a great job too because they are typically done earlier and work less hours total but it takes a toll on your body. I'll be honest with you I worked 9-6 as an associate but my office hours are 10-6 yet as an owner I "work" way more than that. I don't really consider what I do work only because I truly love it which sounds corny I know but it's true!

I have a couple questions. Would Botox replace the need to have a splint? Will exercises help or stress out the muscle? Is EWST an effective option? Is there any way the muscle can regenerate? I am having a problem. I wore a pallate expander when I was 21 for a couple of years and it messed up my palalle. I had a even pallate before I wore it. It caused my pallate to be uneven with the left side wider than the right and the arm of the expander cut into the roof of my mouth and left a permanent knot on the right side where its more narrow. I have been unhappy about this so long. I don`t know what to do or where to go so I can this fixed. Every oral surgeon I go to want to charge me for a consult and never help me and I get nowhere with orthodontic consultations either because they tell me they don`t put expanders on adults or they wont expand it so it will be even on both sides. The issue is the uneveness is really bothering me and I want something done to make my pallate symmetrical again. The places I go to dont listen and want to do anything for me and I hate that I am stuck like this because it was not like this before. I feel like I get the run around everywhere I go and ripped off and charged for nothing. Do you have any suggestions?

    Hey Nathan, I wrote a comment four days ago, I wasn't expecting you to reply, but to my pleasant surprise, you did. So I have one more question, in your opinion, what is the best state to live in for an orthodontist, and what state do you live in? Thanks!

    • @ThriveDentist
      @ThriveDentist  Pƙed 4 lety

      Hey Jeff, I went to school in California but it's probably one of the worst states for business. We live in Texas now and it's been great for us. The midwest states are probably the best for business but you have to balance business with overall life quality and that's more of a personal decision.

    Hi I’m vlad,
    And I’m planning on getting my braces next week but I’ll be going to college(different city 3hrs away) next fall and currently don’t know what to do rn. Would you recommend I get it now or wait till I go to college and then find a clinic there and do it or what?
    Thanks in advance
    New sub btw:)

      Hey Vlad. We have patients that go to school far away and come back just for the normal college breaks (every 3 months or so). It's definitely not ideal and you will likely prolong treatment a little. If you are planning on attending the same college for 2 years or more I would probably just get them done near the college you are attending. It's really hard to switch Orthodontists mid treatment. Hope that helps!

      Nathan Coughlin I’m really trying to get it over w but idk... been postponing my appointments to get it on bcuz I don’t wanna there to be a situation where I would have to wear it for a long time and have to spend more money. And the college I’ll be going to is 3 hrs away.

      We move teeth with RCTs all the time. If done correctly should be no problem.

    • @ThriveDentist

      Hey Maddie retainers retain your teeth in the same position so if your teeth are still straight just get a new set of retainers. If they are crooked then likely braces again.

      Love this comment because you are thinking far ahead which is great. If you go into any field thinking it will be good for the next 50 years I believe you are mistaken. Technology is getting better and better so we have to continually evolve but I believe a version of orthodontics will be around for a really long time. What it will exactly look like in the future I am not sure but it's exciting either way!

    I’m in high school and I do maths B but I really feel as if it’s really hard for me and I don’t want to fail and impact my ATAR
    I want to switch to maths A (easier maths) but idk if maths is really important to become an orthodontist
    So my question is, do you need methods/maths B to become an orthodontist?
    Love your videos and keep up the good work😀

      Oh and another factor may be that I do physics but don’t do chemistry and biology
      It says the prerequisite is only English and assumed knowledge is one of methods/maths B, physics, biology or chemistry
      So since it says one, could it be possible to be an orthodontist with just studying physics in high school?

    Can I have sarpe surgery done to expand my palate if i am missing my first molor and tooth number 10 in the front. I am 28 year old female had previous ortho treatment that went really bad. I wore a palate expander when I was 21 and it left my pallate very uneven. I have root resorption to and will need dental implants on some teeth. In order to fix this mess I will need surgery. I am just wondering how this will be done if I am missing some teeth. How can they expand my palate if my molor is missing or can they expand it by the bone without using the tooth. I am also wondering about the dental implants to. Should i wait to after ortho to get the implants or can they put a temporary tooth theRE so I wont have a gap or just leave the gap How does that work?

    • @ThriveDentist

      Nope. Takes roughly 10-12 years to become an orthodontist either way. If you want to be board certified then it's just another test/presentation of cases.

      I’m pretty sure he’s in America or Canada where they don’t have GCSEs or A levels there, pretty sure that’s only in the UK. What I’d recommend is googling the required marks for the dental school you want to go to including the required A levels and GCSEs :). In Canada and US, you go to dental school after your undergrad but I’m sure that in the UK, dentistry is an undergrad degree, as far as specializing in orthodontics, I’m not entirely sure as I live in canada and don’t really know how it works in the UK, best thing for you to do is research (google) :)

      For A level. Maths, chemistry and biology you should aim for all A’s. If you get 2 A’s and a B you can still get in but it may be harder
