    I would say that books you asked to bring into your library should count towards the 60% (so purchases and wishlist gifts) but surprise gifts are free game (so if the publisher/a friend just send a book they think you'll like)

    • @RainlionReads
      @RainlionReads Před 6 měsíci +8

      I agree with this, any books you bought or requested should count to the 60% but anything that's a surprise is free of the 60% because you didn't intentionally bring them home.

    • @JessTalkingBooks
      @JessTalkingBooks Před 6 měsíci +3

      Agreed. Pubs sending books without request are bonuses. Even if a happy surprise.

  • @katecordes3101
    @katecordes3101 Před 6 měsíci +10

    For Atlas Complex- I think if the publisher/author/etc. asks to send a book to you and you say yes, it should be counted for 2024 ‘purchases’ but if it’s unsolicited and you decide to keep it then that doesn’t go on the ‘purchases’ list, because you didn’t actually ask for it. Not sure if that makes sense lol.

    • @katecordes3101
      @katecordes3101 Před 6 měsíci +2

      In the same vein, gifted books from your wishlist would go on the purchases list, but books gifted outside of that would not

  • @marynuttall163
    @marynuttall163 Před 6 měsíci +10

    I vote that only the books you purchase should count towards the 60% of 2024 reads. However, videos like this are a good idea to be accountable for all new books. That way you can keep close track of what comes in, is read, and what goes back out. 👍🏻💛 ☔🌷

  • @rhondasruminationsonreading
    @rhondasruminationsonreading Před 6 měsíci +12

    🌷🌷🌷 I would only include books you buy because those are the ones you have control over.

  • @curiositykilledthekat
    @curiositykilledthekat Před 6 měsíci +9

    personally i would include everything unread that comes into your library in the year bc i think it works on the 2nd point you mention, where you'll look and see if a gifted book is truly something you want to read and keep, and ultimately one less unsolicited book you may not read but keep out of some oligation could make space for one book you truly do want in your collection. or maybe don't add to the square but keep a seperate tally to see how many books you get that you actually do end up reading and enjoying

  • @WhatVictoriaRead
    @WhatVictoriaRead Před 6 měsíci +5

    I would include books sent by publishers, as it’s a book you’ve ‘acquired’ and you don’t want to go off reading them because they don’t hit a bingo square. You could always separate them out on your spreadsheet, when it comes to tracking the money side of things ☺️

  • @katherinevandekerkhove2655
    @katherinevandekerkhove2655 Před 6 měsíci +2

    What I do (and might work for you too) is decide immediately on books that are gifted : if I would have bought it myself, it counts. If I would've never have thought of it, it doesn't.

    I nearly burst into tears from seeing how BEAUTIFUL that edition of Charlotte's Web is. The book and movie are so special to me, so that special edition is going HIGH on my Christmas wishlist!!!

  • @katiewinn2660
    @katiewinn2660 Před 6 měsíci +3

    For The Atlas Complex I would base the decision on whether you planned to buy the book yourself (even if it was just going to go on your wish list for the time being). The Atlas is a series you've talked about liking and I was under the impression you'd already finished The Atlas Paradox and were ready for the finale. Correct me if I'm remembering wrong but I thought you had kept a goal to finish more series on your 2024 bingo board. Applying The Atlas Complex to your 60% purchases goal only helps you because then the book counts towards 2 bingo squares instead of 1, plus you wanted to stop it from becoming a "rainy day" book anyways.

  • @michelleferguson7212
    @michelleferguson7212 Před 5 měsíci

    I JUST came from your 2023 bingo review and you really spoke about the square being the intention of decreasing your spending of money of books you don’t wind up reading. You talked about loving adding to your library and being excited about the potential of books as a separate positive. Don’t rob yourself of the enjoyment you have from a gift or the fun of a publishers ARC. The purchase of special editions should only count if you haven’t already read the book ( ex the beautiful Red Rising series you got would only count if you hadn’t read part of the series yet-if you read it don’t count but consider unhauling a different copy). I did really like someone’s suggestion of counting the gift books toward a number you should unhaul in the future -unhaul a different unliked or unread book if you got a publisher ARC or new unread gift (don’t count much loved special editions like Charlottes Web). Seems like a fun way to keep yourself accountable to not have too many books turn into old TBR and something I might do for myself. Also don’t count books that are used under a certain price-sometimes just fun to find a great deal! Spring🎉

    Question Posed During Video: I think you should include anything you intentionally added to your library. Books you bought for yourself, added to the list. Books you added to your wish list bought by others, added to the list. Book sellers sending you books, not added to the list unless it meets one of the other criteria. Books that someone gifted that was not in your wish list, not added to your list. That might be more complicated to track, but I think it deals with the question of if my book buying didn't have a budget what would my library look like? It also helps you look at books that you are interested in to see if they are actually books you would enjoy helping you further refine your book taste. Presumptuous to assume you need it.
    Peter Pan Retelling: I don't know if you've read this duology yet, but I have a Peter Pan retelling that I really loved. Caveat: I don't like the Peter Pan story; it's never one I've read, the Disney movie didn't do it for me, and most of the adaptations haven't either. I could be wrong, and it could be the worst retelling ever, but that's okay with me :). The books are Dust and Shadow by Kara Swanson in the Heirs of Neverland Duology. I apologize if this is a series you've already reviewed, but I haven't heard it mentioned that often. Additionally, please check the content warnings because it is not a light read.
    Just an Aside: We don't have similar taste in books. I have added a few books from your recommendations to my TBR, but for the most part, I'm here for your energy and ways you look at your reading. I love your channel. I'm really excited for what the Bingo Board from Hell reveals to you over the course of the year and I wish you all the good books!

    🌱 I'd say only count the books you spend your own money on towards the 60%.

    🐦That edition of "Charlotte's Web" is so pretty! Regarding "The Atlas Complex", I wouldn't count it against yourself because you didn't buy it. That goes for any books that are "gifted" to you (in my opinion). I was on a book buying ban but stumbled upon a sale and they had a hardcover copy of "Stargirl", which I borrowed over a decade ago, loved, and can't stop thinking about. So I used a bit of my tax return to treat myself and spent less than 60 dollars on 7 books. 😃 So I'm off to attempt to read at least one book from my TBR cart today so that I can offset the new arrivals.

    While the book didn't cost you money capital, it did come into your life because of social capital. Your work on booktube earns you both. I think it should count towards your TBR, but only if it's a book that was already on your radar / one you were looking at paying money for.

    🌱🌸 I count any book adding to my tbr, because I'm not that stressed about the money spent aspect but more the "rainy day book"- thing, but if your focus is on both, I think I'd only count the one you asked for or bought with your own money and leave gifts and books send to you unsolicited out. I'm really curious what you think of the Ninth Rain. Sending you and Harry and the pets lots of love 💜

    Personally, I think the books you buy yourself vs books that otherwise come into your collection should both be tracked, but separately. One the one hand it’s about your book purchasing, on the other is shelf space. You shouldn’t necessarily be held accountable for gifts, publishers, etc, but you can’t let that over run your shelves either. I vote track separately, and set a 50% goal for “otherwise acquired” books.

    As far as books that come into your house that you did not purchase....What if they only count if you would have otherwise bought them?
