QOS was good considering the circumstances:
Quantum of Solace didn't work in large part because of the 2007 writers' strike, and Craig detailed how he and the crew struggled without a full script. The actor explained, "We had a writer's strike. We had a script; it wasn't completed, but it was nearly completed. The movie kind of works... Of course, we wanted to top Casino Royale, but, you know…” According to Indie Wire, the script arrived just two hours before the start of the strike. Longtime James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli believes there was even less of a script available during the production, noting, "We basically started shooting without a script, which is never a good idea."
The studio wasn't happy with the script that was turned in, and it may have been an early or even first draft that the studio simply had to deal with. Once the 2007 strike happened it meant that no writer who was part of the WGA was allowed to work, which left MGM without a Quantum of Solace script it was happy with. The cast and crew had to make things up on the fly, including dialogue and even action sequences. Daniel Craig wrote most of the movie with Marc Forster, and he seems like his own biggest critic, stating, "There was me trying to rewrite scenes - and a writer I am not. Me and Mark Forster were the ones allowed to do it. The rules were that you couldn’t employ anyone as a writer, but the actor and director could work on scenes together. We were stuffed."

After several viewings of this film, I was able to get over the things I don't like about it (mainly the editing in the first half) and appreciate what a terrific Bond film this is. Great action scenes augment what is certainly the most politically pessimistic of the Bonds, during which M's stormy relationship with Bond is finally resolved when she realizes he's the only person she can depend on to simply do the right thing. I love the frantic cargo plane and desert hotel sequences, and while the latter strains credulity, it makes up for it in sheer thrills. I also love the Mathis scenes and the emotional impact they have on Bond. The final scene is pure spy stuff in the vein of "From Russia With Love." One detail I especially love is the rare instance of Bond breaking the 4th wall: when the two cops order him to open his trunk, he gives us the briefest glance and asks "Now why would they want me to do that?" Another delightful detail is when the redhaired agent Miss Fields refuses to divulge her first name, which we can easily guess since this is a Bond film.

  • @mrtim5363

Great reaction, so glad you like Bond. I've always been a Bond fan from day 1 & lucky enough to see almost every one in the theater. When I think of Bond it cars, guns, explosions, girls, & sex. In one, a line is "It's good to have you back Mr Bond, I hope we're going to see some gratuitous sex & violence." Amen. This movie didn't disappoint me one bit. Because for fans like us there's a dozen or more Bond references that we all know & love. Most obvious is Ms Fields, covered in oil. A copy of a girl covered in gold in 'Goldfinger' right down to her pose & the framing of the shot. (Probably the same bed too, didn't check.)

Among my top favorites of the Craig series, and Bond films in general. I guess I like the slower pace, story development, the motivations, the clear cut good vs bad. The conclusion is terrific, as well. "Corinne I suggest you leave now. You contact your people, tell them to check their seals. They have a leak." - all said while pointing a loaded weapon at point blank range, finger on the trigger, staring into their eyes. Cold as can be.

Great reaction Coby, like always. This is the weakest bond movie because sadly, they rushed filming and post-production schedule resulted in the film being rewritten as it was shot, with the sequel featuring choppy editing and a paper-thin storyline. Craig himself has since been honest about the various production difficulties on Quantum Of Solace, where even he was forced to rewrite scenes. And it happen during the 2007/8 writers strikes, but at least the action scenes are great, location is great. The next one its amazing. Keep up the good work.

As far as not worrying about the main character in an action film not dying, I would love for you to give me an example of the main character in any action movie dieing. It's not about that. You know Bruce Willis is not going to die, and you know batman isn't going to die. It's how the hell are they going to get themselves out of these dire situations they perpetually keep funding themselves. Now, what if for the next bond actor, they hype him up, they leak to the press he has a 3 movie contract, and then they kill him half way through the first movie. Do you think that's possible? I love Jeffrey Wright as Felix Leiter. Best actor to play that role since the original guy, Jack Lord, from the 1960s. If you watch the other films, they intentionally make Felix uncool and dull, so as not to overshadow Bond. Here, they just go for it and it really works. When I first saw this, I'd heard about the writer's strike and the fact that Daniel Craig at the director, Marc Forster, as well as Michael G. Wilson wrote the script for this movie and it really shows.
I love that it's a revenge movie and it absolutely had to be after Vesper's death. But the pacing is ridiculous and where this kind of pacing actually worked for the Bourne films in terms of storytelling because Jason is on the run, has amnesia and doesn't really know who he's being chased by, here if just doesn't make sense. 007 goes from a fantastic Ian Fleming novel (one of his best, perhaps only behind On Her Majesty's Secret Service and From Russia With Love) to a ridiculous plot about a villain stealing...water.
The Bond novels and films from the beginning were centred in the Cold War. As soon as the Cold War ended in 1990, the films had a hard time trying to figure out how James Bond fit into a post-Cold War world. No matter how silly the films got before that at times, they were still rooted in that reality and people back then identified with that danger. Now they basically have to manufacture that out of nothing, and it's been tough.
Here, I like the idea of a revenge film after the death of Vesper, as mentioned, but the mistreatment of some key characters from Casino Royale, the villain motivations, and Bond somehow being able to jump into bed with another woman almost immediately after losing someone who seemed to be the love of his life didn't work for me. I know he's a horndog, but Casino went to all the trouble to convince us that he's been deeply scarred by those events, and yet that PTSD and psychological torture he's putting himself through doesn't stop him from skirt chasing. People accuse Bond of being relatively chaste in the Craig era, but when he does sleep with a woman, often it makes zero sense. I really like Daniel Craig as James Bond, certainly more than Pierce Brosnan, but the writing sometimes leaves me flat.
This had the basis for a great revenge plot, but for me it misses the mark because of the writer's strike. Watch the next one. It's quite good and we're re-introduced to some old characters from the novels and previous Bond films.

This movie was okay. What makes a great Bond film is the interaction between Bond and the Bond Girls and villains. Also you can't overlook the theme song either. I thought the action scenes were a little choppy in this one, the editing didn't do it for me. Bond's personality was a little different as well, I believe Daniel Craig played it a little more darker due to Vesper's death. From the history of Bond films they're not all good, some way worse than this one. But I think you'll enjoy Craig's Bond the rest of the way

'Quantum' is an interesting film. I can't say it is one of my personal favourites (tonally it is too dark for my tastes, the villain isn't much fun and visually I find it a little drab and dusty to look at - I think Timothy Dalton's 'Licence to Kill' carried a similar vibe is a more enjoyable way) but I do think it is underrated by the fandom at large. I respect how lean and focused it is, some of the setpieces are amazing and Olga Kurylenko is crazy beautiful and charismatic.

The latest films (the Daniel Craig series) have scenes that refer to previous films, if you watch them without going through the previous ones you may lose some of the "magic".
It's good to remember that the theme song for the 007 films is an important part of the films, it's part of the "magic" and should be considered when watching.

    ma'am
yes perplexing in a lot of way, first the editing ... the quick-fire "bourne type" is fine for interior shots, but when it went to exterior it should have been able to breathe ... especially the quarry sequence, have one of the cars get squished by a huge slab after bond shots it down, and that hairpin was crying out to have a lovely long shot without music!
then there is ms fields and her death, but realised it was the end to a means
i made a LONG list of stuff i'd do shortly after i left the cinema, in fact i was so miffed i left my juice bottle!!!
however there were some outstanding stuff, the opera, the DC3 flight and fight sequence ending with that horrifying drop into the sinkhole ... the boat chase mirroring a previous movie, and the final denouement in the hotel (had a good chuckle at medranos face when he got screwed)! but the best part is where there is NO sound at all, entering mr slates apartment, absolutely zero sound apart from the beads clinking together in the breeze, beautiful little scene then ultra-violence!!!
the car chase at the beginning is right after the end of casino royal, a play on the title sequence to CR, as that was him escaping from the british embassy!
so very very miffed, so miffed i decided to "have a talk" with the direct marc forster, when his next movie world war z was filming in glasgow! alas i did not "have a talk" with him, but i did enjoy watching filming one of the vehicle stunts, it was SO LOUD!!!
a very different bond movie in terms of feel, thankfully the following ones brought me back into classic bond
oh and i really liked the jack black/alicia keyes theme song, very different to all the rest, maybe not "better than all the rest"!
never got over losing my juice bottle
