I saw it in theaters back in the day, and at the time I wasn't even aware that there *is* a twist, not to mention what that twist is. Watching it again, knowing the surprise at the end, makes it even better, as you start to notice all sorts of other stuff that tells the story of Malcolm and his wife, as she still grieves for him and just can't seem to move on with her life. So touching and beautiful and I always tear up at some of the scenes in this movie.

9:50 "How do toll booth operators take bathroom breaks?"
Almost all toll booths are multiple lanes on large roads. Multiple booths, multiple operators.
They also have an office - look next time, there's always a building right there next to the row of booths.
In that office is a bathroom and at least one employee and/or boss who isn't working in the booths.
So, when somebody in the booths needs a break for bathroom, luch, cigarette, whatever, the extra person in the building replaces them so they can take a break.

Great reaction Amelia like always. The attention to detail in this movie is amazing and makes it a fun rewatch. Every time there's a ghost and a human nearby there's something red. A red balloon leads Cole up the stairs at the birthday party. Cole's safety tent is made of red blankets. The horrible mother at the funeral is wearing red. The inexplicable changes of temperature from normal to so cold that you can see the characters’ breath can be explained by the fact that it only gets cold when a ghost is upset. So well done. There are others fun-facts about it, Walt Disney Studios' then-president David Vogel didn’t bother to consult with his superiors before paying $2.25 million for the rights to The Sixth Sense, and agreed to let Shyamalan direct the already-expensive film. Vogel’s boss was livid when he found out about the deal, and demanded that Vogel relinquish some of his power. When Vogel refused, he was canned. Actor Donnie Wahlberg lost 43 pounds for his role of Vincent Grey, changing his appearance so much that director M. Night Shyamalan did not even recognize him on the first day of filming. The inexplicable changes of temperature from normal to so cold that you can see the characters’ breath can be explained by the fact that it only gets cold when a ghost is upset. Shyamalan regretted casting himself as dr. Hill, He did it as a “nice little thing” to acknowledge his parents, who are both doctors. Unfortunately, the actor Manoj Nelliyattu Shyamalan wasn’t good enough for his director: He thought his acting was so bad that he cut most of his scene. Cole speaks a Latin phrase in church upon meeting Malcolm: “De profundis clamo ad te domine.” These are actually the first few words of Psalm 130 in The Bible. Translated into English, thy mean, “Out of the depths, I cry to you, O Lord.” This movie story it’s similar to an episode of are you “Afraid of the dark” the 1994 episode “The Tale of the Dream Girl” shares a similar storyline to this movie, where a teenager named Johnny doesn’t realize that he’s dead until the very end of the episode, even though the only living person that talks to him is his sister Erica. (The audience doesn't realize it either.) This movie was one of only five horror movies to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. The others were Jaws, The Exorcist, The Silence of the Lambs, and Black Swan. It was also the only one of these movies that did not win any Academy Awards. Keep up the good work.

It has been a quarter of a century since I first saw this movie and it still wrecks me with every watch, tears streaming down my face and everything. M Night struck platinum with this movie, and gave himself a cameo in it as well as the ER doctor.

You will notice in future viewings that Malcolm never changes clothes or interacts with anyone else in the film. The reveal was excellent, but all the clues were there all along. :)

  • @chrisl8224
    @chrisl8224 Před měsícem

You'll notice that Malcolm never interacts with anything. Except smashing the window at his wife's work. He never enters a room or exits a room through a door that we see. He just appears where he's trying to be. Loosing track of time in-between. He never moves any chair or place he sits. He's wearing the exact same suit the entire time with the only exception being the grey sweater in the hospital with Cole. He never eats. Never sleeps. Besides smashing the door the only objects he interacts with are his notes and tape player in the basement. He never speaks directly to anyone except Cole and his wife who can't see or hear him and yelling at the guy she works with trying to date her. No one ever looks at him. The impression is Cole's mother was talking to him in the house but no one was speaking. He has "supposed" pages of information on this kid immediately from the beginning of the movie out of nowhere before even meeting him. He somehow knows large amounts of information about this kid and his mother literally out of thin air. The movie let's you assume he was passed off to Malcolm from another psychiatrist but there is no mention of another one at all or how Malcolm got the information and from watching Cole acts like and all but says that he's never seen a psychiatrist only his mother. Cole looks for his mother when Malcolm is suddenly sitting there across from his mother when he gets home from school. Because he doesn't want her thinking he's talking to himself. Malcolm has no other patients. He spends all his time with this kid. No one asking who this guy is following a 9yo boy around at school events and a non immediate family member in his hospital room. Which wasn't even ok to do in 1998 for a psychologist. He follows him around like a puppy and imaginary friend. Malcolm's wife never sleeps upstairs or in their own bed ever. She blocks the basement most likely because he keeps opening the door and it freaks her out. Religious objects don't work on the ghosts because they're not demon's (debatable). And the angry ones can't enter his homemade church. Example being the battered wife with slit wrists. Another example being Cole running from Malcolm in the beginning because he's a ghost. But Malcolm is still able to enter the church. Because he's not angry or hostile. So Cole trusts him starting in the church. The ghosts aren't attached to Cole's apartment they're attached to and seeking him out for help. Anything red is associated with the dead. The red balloon. The red staircase. Cole was wearing a red sweater. The red stripe on the poisoned girls tape box. The door handle to Malcolm's basement was red. The woman who died in the bike accidents helmet was red. Cole's homemade church blankets were red. And many more. Basically anytime Malcolm was there it looked like Cole was talking to himself and no one was there. And no one acts like, looks at or speaks to Malcolm. At all. He's places he shouldn't be where no sane adult wouldn't go wtf are you? And why are you here around this kid? Phycologists aren't allowed to do that. Besides not leaving their office for it unless it's an mental health emergency. So he mayyyybe might have been allowed at the hospital. Maybe. If the doctors and mother had signed off on it. He was just there. The movie makes you assume tons of things. That he was hired by Cole's mother or transferred from a already established psychiatrist. That Malcolm and Cole's mother spoke that day at the house and that's why he knows about the parents divorce and other information. That he originally got his information on Cole from another psychiatrists notes. That he was allowed at the hospital by the doctor's and mother and allowed to be there. That no one said js about a guy who is not related to any kid at a school play to just be there standing in the middle of the aisle watching the entire thing without anyone yelling at him or asking who a creepy guy was just standing there watching an entire play distracting everyone and not sitting down. When Cole went to the poisoned girls funeral he was there alone. Then went upstairs to her room. Alone. No one asking who this guy and kid were because Malcolm wasn't really there. Just some kid who's parents were "probably around somewhere" that probably went to school with the sister or the girl who died. Ignoring the kid but an adult like Malcolm would've been questioned as to who he is and why he was there. No one did. Doesn't show Malcolm or Cole getting bus tickets. Although why no one asked why a 9 year old was on a long range bus by himself I don't know. Probably because Malcolm would want to know why they don't see him 🤔🤷🏼‍♂️. Plot hole. Most people don't notice because the movie is supposed to make you think about the fact that until the ending and reveal that Malcolm died from his gunshot wound. That both Malcolm and us the audience were "seeing what we wanted to see". And making assumptions. Just like Malcolm about the missing information in the movie. Where did Malcolm get his original notes about Cole? We assume from another phycologist and never question it. So did Malcolm. He never interacts with any objects or people. We just assume he does. We assume he was talking to the mother sitting across from him. We assume he's spoken to people at the school and hospital and explained who he was and why someone not related to Cole or a parent was running around a hospital and school with him. We assume everyone at the funeral was just too busy talking and grieving to notice Cole or Malcolm. We assume the wife is cheating because she's sleeping on the couch. And watching the wedding video like they're having problems. We assume that Malcolm sleeps and eats. We assume that he just has a ton of the same dress shirts and clothes. The only exception again being the hospital. Still not sure why that was the only day he wore it. Then wore it in the basement directly after the hospital in the basement doing research. Possibly the day he graduated and it's his college sweater I'm guessing. The audience made large assumptions because it's what we expected to see. Just like Malcolm did. Cole knew Malcolm was dead. He just didn't want to tell him because he probably wouldn't believe him one. Would you? And two it would keep Malcolm from helping him. Probably figured it was better if he figured it out on his own. But ghosts not knowing they're dead doesn't apply to all of them. The poisoned girl obviously knew she was dead. And the biker looks like she knew she was. The hanged people I'm sure knew. And the teacher who died in the fire helping Cole get ready for the play knew and stopped talking and hid from the teacher. Who was probably the one who told Cole about his teacher "stuttering Stanley" since she died while he was a student there. And his own grandmother obviously knew she was dead. So not all ghosts don't know that they're dead. The woman who killed herself didn't and only saw her abusive husband. Or the guy locked in the cupboard in the birthday house. But the rest knew they were dead. I always wanted a Doctor Sleep like sequel. Showing Cole trying to help and his struggles with the angrier ghosts as an adult. And possibly Malcolm visiting him and trying to help with more difficult ghosts. But I doubt it'll ever happen. Sadly.

My sister was 3 or 4 when we were at our grandmother's house. We lived in California but she lived in Michigan. Her house had a creepy basement my sister was terrified of. It also had a laundry shout where you could put your dirty clothes and that lead to the basement, near the washer and dryer.
She wanted to drop through it and I didn't think it was a good idea. If you tell my sister not to do something you have to give her a really good reason. Things like "you might get hurt" and "you might get stuck" weren't good enough for her. (She is still like this at 52).
I was 5 or 6 at the time (I'm two years older than her) but I was already pretty good at talking her out of doing things like this. I had to think of something quick and knowing she was terrified of the basement, I pointed out if she dropped down the laundry shoot she'd be in the basement.
It worked, and we went and found some safer game to play. Frankly, I'm surprised she lived as long as she has.

I worked in parking booths for 15 years. A local college and the local airport. Not a toll booth but it's the same thing. The answer is whatever the largest structure near the booth is will usually be the main office. With a bathroom in it. Or a building that the parking company is contracted for. Example being the college I worked at you would just use the bathroom inside whatever building you were near. Or if near the parking office. The bathroom inside that. Or in the very rare case of neither being near the booth may have its own small airplane sized bathroom attached to it or possibly a Pota Potty. The attendant will have an intercom or a phone. Usually on the right wall to call the office for manager assistance or to verify license plate numbers in some cases. You use that to call a manger to watch the booth while you use the bathroom unless you wait for a 15 minute break or your lunch. Unless you can't wait in which case you still call the manager and lock your booth. Or if there is a second booth and attendant that can take the line of cars. So basically the same way anyone in a "customer service representative" /cashier job does. You call a manager and use the worker or public bathroom closest to you. In a toll booth I guarantee there's a main office near with a bathroom. Or a public bathroom they can use close by. It's the same exact procedure as it is for any cashier anywhere. You wait for a break or call a manager to take over while you go. There's always a bathroom nearby somewhere. Even if it's a Porta Potty or a public one or even in the booth itself. Although I've only seen that last option one time in a far away economy parking lot at the airport where there was nothing but the booth and the cars and a large field next to it. And yes depending on the parking lot. Which can change day to day where you're working. You might have to walk several levels or sets of stairs. Or across an entire large parking lot. Or sometimes even four or five level up. To get into a building that has a bathroom. Most colleges, hospitals, airports and public service businesses have at least 3 parking lots or more. And booth attendants usually get rotated around to all of them during the work week. Unless they're specifically wanted there for the airport valet, or the teacher/special events parking lots for instance. If you're lucky you're near the office and it's a short 30 to 50 foot walk. If not it could take you a few minutes or longer. In which case you need to call the manager about as soon as you know that you need to use it. And depending on how hateful your manager is might actually count as one of your 15 minute breaks.

10:00 Not sure about toll booths, but my friend once found a Coke bottle, about 2/3 full of a pail yellow liquid. He said it was what happens if you leave a Coke in the sun.
I told him that wasn't true. It's what happens if you pass a Coke through human kidneys. He didn't understand so I explained further.
We were near the train tracks and I said, "A train engineer is not allowed to leave the control booth not even to use the bathroom. Drinking a Coke will make you need to pee, but it also gives you something you can pee into."
He understood at this point and quickly dropped the piss bottle. He was quite a bit more horrified by this than I thought was justified.
Turns out it was his brother who told him about the sun bleached Coke. But worse, he'd gotten my friend to taste it.
I asked him what it tasted like and he said "horrible"
In any case, hope that answers your question. Also, never drink sun bleached Coke. It tastes like piss.

This is the only movie about ghosts that is close to how it actually is exept for the part where they say it gets colder when they are around that wasn't my expirience and still isn't even now to this day, though sadly now I only sense them instead of seeing them and that at times can be worse because when I feel something angry I don't know where it's coming from. Like Cole I was a child who could see ghosts but unlike him I had to figure it out on my own but yes when you listen to their stories even if you don't understand the language they tend to be able to move on after that. Aslo it doesn't get colder when they are angry as well. M.night when he wrote this movie was living in an old castle so i would imagine that cold spots as it were was not something that was uncommon but I also would imagine that either he saw ghosts himself or just sensed them around. any way that twist was a shock to me when I first saw this movie though now that I have seen it many times I start to catch the little hints that he reveils to us over the corse of the movie, that if I was paying attention maybe the ending wouldn't be such a shock. Also I like how he uses the color red a lot here. The scene between Cole and his mother at the end when they talk in the car has me crying everytime and that is rare for me to do in movies. The throwing up ghost was the actress Mishca Barton and if you saw the tv show the Oc you will know her as Marissa there. His mother is Toni Collette who in my opinion is one of the best actressess out there. Grate reaction.
