In this video I tested Andrew Huberman's Jetlag hacks. This is part 2 of an 8 part Europe trip series so stick around for more travel mistakes and wins!
"IKEA on steroids" 😂 😂 you remind me so much of one of my friends who's always bubbly and laughing. Just discovered your channel and live the content! Your experience here reminds me of what it's like to not sleep for more than 24h in a row (med student who works in hospitals)
This is good advice. I generally try to begin acting as if I’m on the time of my destination, before I start the journey. In November 2019, I spent about a week in London working 5-6 straight days in the studio 8-9 hour days, sometimes longer. On London time, we were awake every day at about 7am and in the studio by 9, so I was well adjusted to that clock. My schedule was such that I had to be back a day earlier than my traveling partners because of a class I had to teach in New York in the evening NY time, roughly 6pm. The only flight I could book that was a reasonable price and would get me back to NY in time enough to make the class, had a layover in Moscow. My flight from London to Moscow left around 10pm London time. I was DEAD tired from a long week. As I boarded and sat down I was scared I would pass out on the 3-4 hour flight to Moscow. I knew I had to stay awake so i needed to keep myself occupied. I begged the flight attendant for coffee which was difficult bc she claimed to not know much English. I managed to figure out that the only in flight entertainment available, was on a mobile app that had to be downloaded prior to boarding- no other use of Wi-Fi available. I fought to stay awake for nearly 4 hours with literally nothing to do. None of my devices did anything without anything downloaded previously. I barely made it. I arrived in Moscow something like 6am I think local time? Went through security etc and into the terminal. After all the coffee and being 100% delirious, I knew my only hope was to sleep on the flight from Moscow to New York which was roughly 10 hours I think? The layover was I think 3 hours, and my cognitive abilities were definitely not 100%. I figured “ok, I know it’s like 9am here in Moscow, but I’m supposed to land in New York around noon ish NY time, so I can’t sleep when I get home bc I won’t make it to class at 6pm. I NEED A BEER” So I find a bar in the Moscow terminal, ask for a beer from a girl who also claims to not know English. (How do you work in an international airport terminal, and not speak English? 🤔) another girl comes and helps me. I specifically told my bank before hand that I would be in Moscow on this day so my card would work. It didn’t work. I called the bank. They said it should be working. It didn’t work. The only thing I had was a $100 usd bill, and a $20 usd bill. I briskly walk down the terminal to the money exchange counter. A man behind the window also claims to not know much English. I change the $20 bc wtf 20 should get me two beers… it didn’t. What I have left is just shy of the second beer. So I run back down there and I’m like fuck maybe he can give me change. I wave the $100 bill and say “DO YOU HAVE CHANGE?” It took a couple of minutes but I managed to get $40 usd back from him, and change the rest to rubles. I should have just got another 20 lol I got back and got the second beer. So I’m like ok fuck this I need to sleep in this plane, so I got a third, mind you these are tall boys.. I’m barely halfway through the third beer and I suddenly realize they are calling the final call for my flight. I gulp what I can, grab my bag and throw down some rubles for a tip. Who the fuck knows how much it was or what any of it is worth, especially in this state of mind, and I run to find the gate. Luckily I made it. This particular Russian plane was much better than the first (Thank GOD). It had a screen on the back of the seat with only Russian programming. I don’t give a fuck, it’s something. After about an hour in the air, they pass out a full meal and it wasn’t bad at all. I eat every fucking morsel, watch a little more Russian tv, and put my sleep mask on. I never sleep on planes… but I fucking passed the fuck out. I think I slept for nearly 7 hours. I was dead. I woke up, and went to the bathroom. They gave us a snack and I made it to New York… feeling surprisingly human, some time around noon. I made my way to a train back to long island, managed to get a ride from a friend back to my car. And I drove home. Showered dressed etc chilled and headed to class. It made for a good story at the end of class lol to this day, I still have a pile of fucking Russian rubles that no one will exchange for me. I changed like $80 worth and maybe spent 35 or so? I really don’t know the next time I’ll ever find myself in Russia again, so it looks like I’ll have these rubles forever lol
Nice place-looks beautiful! Good tips for preventing jet lag but I don’t do well without sleep. Kudos to you for not sleeping. 😮One time flying home from Hawaii I tried to go up a DOWN escalator. Would have been a good workout.
I think I unintentionally follow this routine!! I purposely take red eyes on the way to Europe so I wake up semi local time, and start my day like normal! The way back I need some help 😭😭
Ive never experienced Jetlag not sure what the feeling would be like. When im on a plane i either sleep or stay wide awake to prepare myself for the timezone im landing in. Not sure how ive avvoided but seems to work each time i travel far
