Exploring the Gilman Tunnels & Guadalupe Box ~ New Mexico

The Gilman Tunnels are something of an early 20th century engineering marvel. This little back road along Rio Guadalupe in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico was at one time the railroad grade for the Santa Fe and Northwestern Railroad. This area of Guadalupe Box, aka the Narrows, presented a challenge the railroad overcame using dynamite. The result is a stunning pair of tunnels amidst towering sheer cliffs and high above the river below. It’s one of the most dramatically beautiful places I’ve ever seen.

Isn’t that place beautiful? And not hard to get to, only an hour from Albuquerque…and there’s a lot more to explore up the highway you get off of to see this spot
