- We have visited New Mexico a few times in the van, so as we were passing through this time, we wanted to explore an area that was brand new to us. We landed on a region in the Southwestern part of the state, near Silver City and the Gila National Forest and Wilderness, which we hadn't heard much about, but it ended up being the BEST surprise!

I came to the Gila/Mimbres headwaters region sorta unexpectedly in 1974, and, after short youthful interludes elsewhere since, here I still am. As I like to say to newcomers, freshly in love with the area for various reasons, "You've chosen wisely."
Stunning, transporting and magnificent ... how much i miss Silver City & area/ wild places i cannot measure....
Love New Mexico. One of my favorite places to sit. Been there 6 times from Canada
Ah, my hometown where I was born and raised. I grew up exploring, hunting and fishing that whole area. I"m glad you found the Grapevine/Forks area and Doc Campbell's homemade ice cream. Just a couple of miles north of the visitor center along the Continental Divide is a really cool natural and pretty much used only by the locals, hot springs where I used to camp along the Gila River called Jordan's Hot Springs. I'm so glad you explored and enjoyed Silver City and the mining district. Thank you for shedding such a positive light on my home town with your amazing cinematography. Safe travels to you guys.
We really wanted to visit Jordan hot springs, but it was just too far of a trek for us this time. Hopefully in the future!
Before you visit the hot springs, make sure you carry water! I ended up dehydrated because of rhe heat.
From Spain, I loved the video of a place as beautiful and wonderful as New Mexico 🌹
❤️💙 Hola! We can’t wait to visit Spain one day!
Yay! Gila Cliff Dwellings. It's an out of the way place, but a beautiful place to get up close and personal with ancient civilization.
Sooo worth the trek! The drive is gorgeous too!
I love that you loved our little town of Silver City! ❤
Loved the entire 20+ min. of your video😊 Especially liked the tour of Silver City and Mogollon Dwellings.
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Absolutely Amazing! So glad these are preserved and protected! Roosevelt knew what he was doing! Too bad some don't have respect for our past. Those mining companies did a lot of damage!
New Mexico is one of my favorite states . The cliff dwellings are fascinating! The Cat Walk Trail was wonderful. I especially liked the fact that you had it to yourselves
I enjoyed every minute of this video!! I am so glad you guys are on the road again.😁😁
We loved that part too! Always nice to enjoy places without tons of people!
Great vid! Love seeing the lesser known areas of states. Looks like you had everywhere you went all to yourself and you can't beat that. And yes you're correct, never too cold for ice cream!
We loved getting to explore this area! Especially because we never hear much about it. Those kind of gems are our favorite 😍
I totally agree with Nate! Never too cold for ice cream!
14:00 in 1997 I spent the summer touring the US. I remember stopping here and getting the homeade ice cream. I rode my harley over the mountains from silver city. I remember free ranging cattle on the road. On the top of the mountains there was an old hippy in a chevy blazer watching a forest fire many miles away through a pair of binoculars. I stopped and talked to him for a bit and he took a picture of me on my bike using my camera. On the way back, there was a thunder and lightning show, and i got a little wet. I was 22 years old and had my whole life in front of me. Wish I could relive that day, obviously.
Yeah that sounds like an awesome day. Thanks for sharing and thanks for watching!
I love the patience of your filming. You allow the scenery to do the work and focus on smaller things that could be easy to miss!
We love filming the little details when we can! Glad you enjoy it 😃
@@AdventuresofAplusK I've watched many YT traveling vids and I just want to say I think yours is THE BEST!!! Perfect blend of scenic photography, interesting little places along the way, great narration & personal touch, and food, food, FOOD! Well done! :)
Thank you so much for making this video. We just went to Silver City for a long weekend. We did almost everything in your video and had a wonderful time. Please keep making your videos.
We're so glad to hear that! Thanks for watching!
Went to Doc Campbells today after hiking Gila Cliff dwellings. Great day for us. Thanks for your video.
Nice! Glad you had a good day!
At 7:07 you can catch a glimpse of our beautiful Kneeling Nun! The open pit mine lookout is awesome too. Great video guys! Thank you
Very cool! Thanks and thanks for watching! We love Silver City!
We loved your video! All the local places you stopped and all the history you gave was wonderful! And thanks for stopping in at Doc Campbell’s Post and including us! We are honored! Hope you have a wonderful trip! Can’t wait to follow you on your travels!
Thank y’all so much for chatting with us and for making delicious ice cream! We loved our stop there! ❤️
Fantastic video of our area! I will re-explore my stomping grounds again because of your video. Been many years since I have been to these outskirt areas and now as a retiree you have me eager to pay these places another visit. Thank you!
Thank you so much for watching! ❤️
Absolutely incredible! How you guys manage to find all of these neat places is truly a gift 🥺❤️ The cliff dwellings are a gem, as well as the trail you found!!
We are so glad you enjoyed it! ❤️
I first visited the Gila Cliff Dwellings in 1958. Back then, it was quite primitive compared with what you see today. We were escorted by a man named Campbell, 'Doc' if I recall correctly, and he was a 'dollar a year' employee who protected the site.
No bridge over the Gila River at the time; my car flooded, and he came down with a team of horses and pulled me out. We later rented horses from him (I ended up with a mule named "White Rat', that later fell victim to a mountain lion) and admired his use of hot water from a spring to heat his store/house in the winter. Good memories!
Oh wow what a story! Thanks for sharing and watching!
I’m so enjoying this journey. I’ve been following you ever since I found you by way of your exceptionally well written blog post on traveling with a reactive dog. As travelers with a reactive dog, we appreciate that you show places where you can comfortably and safely adventure with your fur baby.
Plus, your style of travel off the beaten path is similar to ours. I think my spreadsheet of places to visit is going to fill up by the end of this series based on all the fascinating places you’ve shared with us in just your last two videos!
We feel your pain about having a reactive pup! It is TOUGH! And there is a lot of anxiety and stress behind the camera when it comes to having Kona with us. But we are so glad she can join us for things and mostly it isn't embarrassing! We have loved visiting some lesser known spots so far. Hopefully we can give you more ideas as we continue on!
Y'all are the best channel on CZcams!
You’re too kind! ❤️
You guys do such a great job with your videos! I will be heading to that area of New Mexico soon and I can't wait to check out lots of the places y'all visited. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome! Thank you and thanks for watching!
We really enjoy watching all your videos last year. We are in the high mountains of Colorado a retired couple who love your adventure. Keep posting and be safe.
Thank you so much for watching! We love Colorado!
Silver City, so cool. Kona looked amazed on the catwalk. Stargazing was nice! 🔭
She looked better than she felt lol! The holes on the bridge scared her a bit, but she was brave!
Love the new graphics & map at the beginning!
We are so glad!
We really enjoyed learning about the Gila Cliff dwellings. That’s really cool to learn about some of the parts of the US we’ve never even heard about before. Those photos turned out amazing! I think that’s our favorite photograph of Brisket the Van ever.
Brisket looked like a star! 💫🤩 thank you for helping keep us awake so we could actually stay up and take the photos!
NM - truly the land of enchantment. Love the vibrant colors on the buildings and houses. Only 53 days until spring!! Looks like Kona was guiding mom and dad like the white dog was guiding the goats. 👍👍🙋♂️
She totally was!
Finally, tempted my interest - Cosmic Campground. Thanks.
I found the first of your journey, and it is amazing. The west is just amazing. I love the cliff dwellings, but really I loved it all. I watched parts of the Alaska last night, and this morning I found the beginning of your journey. I am really enjoying every single video and all the amazing places you have gone. I loved the old mine too. You have the right idea on how to travel. Thank you so much for sharing your journey.
We are so lucky and thankful for all the places we have been to already!
I agree. Every little small town I visited in New Mexico I met so many people who would just sit and have long conversations with you. Everyone is so super nice everywhere i visited there. And don't get me started on the food, always amazing. So so many little hidden gems to discover in New Mexico, I see something amazing everytime I pass through
We couldn't agree more! Beautiful nature, delicious food, and great people!
We love southern Utah and all of the ancient cliff-dwelling ruins, but Gila looks absolutely amazing. It is now on our bucket list. The Catwalk looked cool too, and that whole area deserves more exploration! Thanks for sharing your experiences.
We totally agree! Such an underrated area!
A lot of Utah and Arizona's cliff dwellings are blown up and destroyed. It's pretty messed up!
you got a nice shot of the Andromeda galaxy there on your night photos... nice video... :)
You have found the most special area in the lower 48. You have only scratched the surface of what there is to see and do there. Very few people know about the Gila.
Thanks for sharing your experienes. Well done on the astrophotography! They turned out great.
Thank you so much!
The artwork in Silver City is so pretty, and the coffee shop was amazingly eclectic! 😍 Really loved your exploration of the cliff dwellings. Interesting how you were allowed to do a self tour but weren't at Mesa Verde, I guess it doesn't get the same visitor numbers? Your night sky photos were really good, but I especially loved the one with the van in it! I think my favourite from this video has to have been the Catwalk. Reminds me a bit of the El Caminito del Rey in southern Spain - not that I've done it... had planned to but COVID cancelled that trip!
We do think Mesa Verde allows people to explore one dwelling on their own, but it was closed during our visit. The self guided, but have a ranger nearby, format is definitely our favorite! This spot was way less busy too, which was a huge perk. We loved the photo with the van in it too! Brisket looks like a star 🤩 Holy cow that spot in Spain looks EPIC! Adding that to the list!
We knew Doc and Ida Campbell when we were much younger (late 1970s). They were a sweet and charming couple. I hope their children and grand children are still there! Glad to see the Campbell store is still a going concern! Gila Cliff Dwellings is a wonderful place. We visited it on a number of occasions. So glad you had the opportunity to go!
Oh that’s so awesome! We had a great time in that area! It was such a gem!
8:02 you drove right past my folks place. :)
I love that you guys saw javelina
I spent 11 years exploring that part of New Mexico. It's definitely an under rated part of the world. I went to the Catwalk I don't know how many times. It was a favorite place of mine to hike.
Really nice job guys. Especially good soundtrack choices. Great summary of the area with good background info and brief map views. Can't wait to follow your trail. Godspeed.
Glad you enjoyed it!
You have a great arial shot of the neighborhood I grew up in. Made me instantly homesick as I love in Tennessee nowadays.
Alaska...take your time and enjoy!
I’m from Deming NM. I’m sure you guys passed by. But if you ever stop in Deming, you have to eat at Irma’s. Hands down some of the best New Mexican food. Especially the carne asada smothered burritos. There also a place called city of rocks between Deming and silver that I think you guys would really like. Love to see your videos and your explorations in NM
That sounds delicious! And we hear city of rocks is super cool!
Great video, looking forward to seeing all the places that you visit.
So well done, thank you for this. My favorite places, and great background music too.
Thank you!
Great vlog! It's always interesting to see my town from someone else's perspective, especially since I live and film videos here everyday, lol. I just found your channel and am enjoying the recent content so far! Also, yes, Tranquil Buzz is the best coffee shop ever.
We’re glad you’re here! Tranquil Buzz was such a neat spot. One of our favs we’ve been to. Thanks for watching!
yall are great!
Not sure of your exact route, or how far along you are by the time that you released this video, but US 60 between Show Low AZ and Globe AZ is a pretty drive that switchbacks down several hundred feet to cross the Salt River. The drives from Globe south towards Winkleman, and west towards Superior are scenic as well.
Thank you for the tip! That’s a bit north of where our route is, but good to know for the future!
@@AdventuresofAplusK Are you coming across on I-10? There is some good hiking in Chiricauhua NM, some nice scenery at Bisbee (Queen Bee mine tours), a really sweet cave at Kartchner Caverns. Also nice hiking in the Tortolita Mtns (just north of Tucson), and in the Catalinas. You can also scale Picacho Peak.
My wife and I have been following you guys for about a year now. Although we're at different stages in life, we love watching your journey and the places you go. We know we are getting s late start as we plan our retirement, and hope to get to many of the sites you've shown us! Thank you!
Another awesome video. Thanks for the great info!!
Thank you for your wonderful views and reviews of our area❤️
Of course! ❤️
That night sky is amazing! Beautiful photos! What a fun video!
Thank you Sarah!
Yay! Super fun vlog you guys! This was so much fun! Those small western towns are always so cool! Also, I love the new intro! Thanks again guys, you're the best!!!!
We are so glad you enjoyed it Brad!
So glad for you to highlight my home state of New Mexico! The Gila has so much to offer!! Great video!
We loved the area! 😍
From Buda, TX here 🙂 You guys are awesome. I love watching the videos where you're on the way to your destination. One of the best feelings as a Texan when going to the mountains is getting out of Texas and seeing the landscape change slowly. Gives me goosebumps. Looking forward to your journey to Alaska! Be safe ✌️
We know and love that feeling! It has been awesome to see mountains and new scenery!
Thanks for giving us so many great ideas!
Wow!! Those photos look incredible!!! So amazing! So spectacular!!
Thank you so much!
Awesome video… Love the music choices… Footage was fantastic as well… You guys have really upped your game this year… Cannot wait for each video on this awesome Alaska journey…
Thank you so much! We hope to make some amazing views this year!
Doc Campbell’s is legit! Their old west women’s lot section is the best!
Doc Camp bell’s was a very nice surprise! We’d love to return in the high season to see it in full swing!

Found this on random, but getting to see my hometown on screen is amazing! It honestly made me a little emotional watching you guys enjoy the very town that I love so dearly.
Thank you so much for watching 💗
Hello from Silver City!!! I missed it when I lived in South Carolina.... Have a great day
Particularly enjoyed your Milky Way photos. Thank you for sharing. Agreed - it's never too cold for ice cream.
We are so glad you enjoyed them! It was cold taking them hahah
Lots of beautiful sights to see in that area. You guys captured it well and told great stories about various information points and historical locations!
Thank you so much!
Love the reference to living in a van down by the river lol!
I'm digging the new intro! Great astro pics too! That would be such a cool experience to be out under the stars. 🌌
We’re so glad you like the intro! You’ll be seeing it for many months to come haha
I've been to Catwalk, was an unexpected treat. Thanks for the memories of that area of New Mexico.
Loved your epic Milky Way photos.
Hope you get to Chiricahua NM... amazing place.
Stay tuned for the next video 😃
Great stuff! I loved the artwork in Silver City. I bet the ruins were fun, and the night sky was awesome! Thanks for sharing and enjoy your trip. 👍
We loved all of the art there too! Always brightens up a town!
Glad you enjoyed my home state. I love it here, need to visit the Gila area more, thanks for the scouting trip.
We loved the area so much! Can’t wait to explore it more someday!
Seeing this video makes me homesick
Thanks for another wonderful video! Definitely your beautiful videos are a highlight in our lives! It was wonderful to see the Gila National Forest. This area is mentioned in Aldo Leopold's writings about conservation and we never been to this part of New Mexico!! Thanks again!!!
We highly recommend this area! It exceeded our expectations!
Great scenery and photography…love New Mexico…I’m ready for ice cream now…thanks for bringing it!!
New Mexico is such a beautiful state!
Omg!! I live in and am from Silver City!! How exciting. I hope you guys enjoyed your stay💕☺️
That is awesome! We had a wonderful time and met so many friendly locals. Y'all know how to make outsiders feel welcome!
I am watching amazing videos of cool places from a couple who live in a van down by the river! Great intro guys!
Thank you!
Route 152 is a beautiful drive and Hillsboro is a cute town.
Another gret episode. Thanks.
That definitely was the Milky Way! Great shots of it. Thanks for sharing this fun trip 😃
Thank you! Was so excited to get to see it! Hoping to do a Timelapse video of it next time 😄
I grew up there. Made me miss it. I need to visit soon!
Such a beautiful and unique place. We were glad we got to experience the Gila Cliff Dwellings and Silver City when we lived in NM. Oh and you had us ooohing at the Poblano Butternut squash soup. Thanks for sharing.
That soup was amazing! We need to make it in the van!
So happy I came across this video! I’m planning a trip to NM this year and this is so helpful!
We are so glad! Have a great trip!
I love how you always give some history on the areas you are visiting. Oh, and that Guinness Beef Stew looked so yumee and comfortingee.
It was delicious!
New Mexico is my new favorite state. And you're right--the people are the friendliest ever. Unfortunately, I live about 10 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and can only get there about once a year. Thanks for this vicarious trip to the Land of Enchantment.
We are so glad you love NM! Where are your favorite spots in the state?
@@AdventuresofAplusK Taos. Santa Fe, and surrounding areas.
Love small, quaint little towns like Silver City! The coffee shop looked so cool! And y'alls soup looked delicious! The Cliff Dwellings do look like MEsa Verde! With a lot less people :) What a cool store and ice cream! So glad they still sell it in the winter. Coffee flavor yes please! You will learn or maybe you already know Alaska is the top seller of ice cream and they are always cold, lol! Awesome nighttime sky pics with the van too! That Catwalk Rec. Area looked so cool! Great road trip so far!
Soooo many less people at both the cliff dwellings and everywhere else! Makes us love visiting these less popular spots even more 😍 And it sounds like Alaska is our perfect place then! There is an ice cream shop that we have wanted to visit for years there and we cannot wait to finally go 🙌🏼
@@AdventuresofAplusK This was awesome!! You made me hop up to put Coffee Ice Cream on my shopping list, hahahah! :)
We've really enjoyed our time in NM, though we haven't been in the SW area. The cliff dwellings looked really cool. Ha! Kathryn busting Adam's chops on this food descriptions. So funny! Adam, she's giving you grief, been smacking your butt.... sheesh!! LOL. The dark sky area looked amazing!!! Awesome photos! The catwalk looked tremendous!
Just gotta keep his renowned food descriptions in check! 😜😜
You were so close to Mogollon. I always do mogollon and catwalk the same day. I also always do the cliffdwellings and the gila hot springs the same day.
Magical place that is actually like as little of people as possible to find out about. Part of its intrigue to go along with all of the beauty is that very few people know of it and there aren’t crowds. I live the headwaters of the gila.
The cliff dwellings only have one way in and out via road though. You have to leave the same way you came. Eventually when leaving the road will allow you to continue on to silver city or turn towards the lake Roberts in the Mimbres valley. The Mimbres area is all a total hidden gem. Super happy to live here.
We had a great time in the area! Much of Mogollon was not open when we visited and the hot springs were also closed for the season during our visit. Hopefully we can check them out next time!
Hello Adventurers😊😊😊, I really enjoyed checking out the Gila Cliff Dwellings in New Mexico. It reminds me of my time at Mesa Verde National Park climbing down to the ruins. Gila seems to be less crowded. Great video👍👍👍👍!
The entire region was way less crowded and we loved that about it!
Beautiful scenery! The cliff dwellings are SO cool! I was wondering if Konie was afraid of the catwalk…so proud of my brave and ADORABLE Konie Bear! The coffee shop was so awesome and that stew and soup looked AMAZING! I love the Milky Way shots and did I see Orion?! He’s my guy! Great job you three! “Woohoo…it was like riding the Bull!” 🤣
She definitely was a little nervous at times and got carried a tiny bit, but she was brave and of course cute as always ❤️ And we did see your guy Orion! Always makes me think of you!
New Mexico!! So excited to follow you in this state :)
What a beautiful place
Enjoyed watching your video. I live here in Silver City! You guys are awesome loved seeing everywhere you went!
Thank you so much for watching and for the kind words ❤️
You went into one of my favorite coffee shops. It looks like they have added more things on the inside. The outside garden is beautiful as well. Love silver city!
We loved the coffee shop so much!
I recently discovered your channel while researching an upcoming trip to Southern Utah, and learned so much from all the places you went last year and all the things you filmed. You guys are awesome - your videos are the perfect mix of informative and entertaining. Keep doing what you're doing, and I hope you have an amazing Journey to Alaska. I'll be along for the ride!
Thank you so much for watching Michael and for the kind words!
Very cool. I'm going to put that on my bucket list. Love it. Always time to ice cream 🍦 😋
Always!
You two sweethearts know how to make a proper travelogue. Wish you the very best together, health and wisdom. You find sumptuous grooves! I truly hope there are little feet in your future.
Thank you and thanks for watching!
But if there was a kid, the adventures might stop?
I like the start of 2022 season, will be following along. Safe travels!
Lots of good adventures to come!
I've wondered what it'd be like to live in one those small towns, they were so peaceful looking. Here in Muskogee, we have nothing really; a nice park, and couple of museums is about all there is!! Take care guys!!!!
It definitely seems like a peaceful way of life!
I live in silver city nm, was raised out here and tho it is absolute beautiful and charming it is very corrupt and high in crime and drugs.
I lived in Silver City from 1949-1957. Grew up and went to school there. Lovely
peaceful little town! I got my first job at the Gila theater at age 16 as a hostess and showed people to their seats after the show started. Saved enough money to buy my first “record player” as they were called them. It played 45 rpm records. I earned .50 cents an hour!
What a spectacular adventure. I really enjoy your channel. Be safe!
We visited Silver City in January of 2020. Like you this was the only cliff dwellings we had visited other than Mesa Verde. Almost felt like we were breaking some kind of rule by being in there on our own after the restrictions at the NP. (Apparently there are other cliff dwellings in Colorado where you have the same freedom to explore). Truly an amazing adventure. It was a snowy day for us also and we opted for coffee at the Trading Post. You are spot on about the people of Silver City. We are from the East Coast and the politeness of the drivers in Silver City blew us away. We were on a whirlwind vacation trip where we only stayed one night in each location but we are planning to go back to Silver City when we have more time to explore. If you ever get back be sure to hit up the mining museum. Watch those high sidewalks though.
Those high sidewalks were a big surprise haha! Definitely gotta watch where you walk 😂 And we also felt like we were breaking the rules somehow. It was so fun to explore on our own!
