My dad bought me a helium balloon at a fair ground when I was 7. I forgot to grab the string when I opened the car door so had to watch it float away. I was devastated lol. I'm 45 and I still remember that feeling.
I am a 59 year old woman, I am still an avid gamer.
I have always been a very responsible person. But I only adult when I have to.
I think it helped me a lot having not had kids to still feel young. Because I haven't watched kids grow up in front of me and not being tied down like parenting ties people down.
It still startles me when I meet friends my age and how old they look. I will then spend too much time looking in the mirror and asking others if I look as old as that friend I had just seen. LOL
The worse thing about being a kid for me was being around the other kids and adults not explaining their reasoning of things to me.
The best thing was playing on my Grandparents dairy farm on the weekends as a child.
How my mom handled fairness: when something needed to be split between my brother and me, her rule was that one of us made the split and the other got to choose. So if we were splitting a bottle of pop (soda) and I poured out, my brother got to choose which glass he wanted. You'd better believe, those glasses were even!
That's a great system :)
Im 46 and birthdays are still awesome.
Im still about 16 in my head and cannot comprehend WHERE 30 years have gone.
as a child - "I Can't WAIT to do all this adult stuff!" > as an adult - "you mean I have to pay for christmas?!" - not much joy when you have to foot the bill.

Team 3 star?
I'm 48, 49 in April and don't feel like an adult at all. I have no clue what I'm doing.
What scares me most though, is my Dad passed away 4 days after my 16th birthday at the age of 48. On 3rd December 2023, I was the exact same age that he was when he passed.. so now, I will always be older than he was, but feel like I have achieved so much less. He was happily married, I'm divorced. He had two children, I have none, although I did want kids. He was a home owner, I've just moved into a rented 1 bedroom flat because I couldn't afford to keep paying an ever increasing mortgage on a property that was continually decreasing in value.
He was medically retired in his mid-30s due to a stroke, but still did whatever he could to support the family. I've had to quit from a job I loved due to stress and anxiety caused by a bully of a manager.
I just want to know when I'll start to understand how things are supposed to work.
My parents made it all seem so easy.
I love all of your content VLDL Team, especially when dealing with mental health issues.
Thank you for bringing topics like that in to the light and helping to reduce the stigma.
Much love to you all ❤
As a 53 year old, I like to tell all the young ones (LoL) to have more fun! Seriously! I went to a theme park last December, and I was all bright eyed and happy and making the jokes considered silly and stupid (like I do every day with my husband anyway, so not a far stretch for me) for someone my age and not be so bothered by what other people might think of you. I refuse to be the grandma (Yes, I am one) that knits baby socks and moans about the youth of today. Nah bro, I listen to hard rock, wear bandshirts, have the sides of my head shaved, read comics, play videogames of all sorts, watch action movies, and just have fun!
Loving VLDL for reminding me to do it even more! Thanks guys, and Ellie!
I’m a few levels ahead of you in years, and I do the same thing. Our parents didn’t grow up with comic books, video games, and rock band t-shirts. On a nice warm December day, I sat on the porch eating lunch, enjoying the warm breeze, reading comic books, and listening to 70’s-80’s music. Good times!
@@WilliamTheMovieFan Thiiiis! So much this! And I love that you also call it levels, and not years. I do that normally as well, but thought, maybe they won't get it, like usually ... forgetting that I am here, at VLDL's corner of the world. ;)
Singing in the supermarket with the music I grew up with ... Yup, that's me. If they are doing my tunes, and making my shopping experience fun, they get the fun. ;)
I can't wait to grow up like this
@@johnp5250 Or, you know, don't. It's a trap. ;)
I was one of those kids who very quickly noticed how stressed and sad most of the adults were around me. Did not make me excited to be an adult, and the more I learned about the "real world" the more I felt like I was just being lied to by everyone for no reason other than to delay the inevitable. But even though it made me not appreciate my childhood as much while it was happening, I think being so scared about being an adult made me lean into myself more than I ever would. I've made a lot of mistakes but I like what I'm becoming at this point.
I'm starting to think these guys were told to do a podcast
Whatever in the world made you think that?
It is kind of crazy that they're actually doing it, though. Three white guys getting through these full episodes of podcasts is unheard of, so it's fascinating to see.
Must not have been a nice day for fishin'.
Christmas eve as a kid... knowing you just had to go to sleep and instantly it would BE CHRISTMAS! Waking up early, feeling out the shape of your presents, waiting until 7am to pry your parents out of bed and open them!
I’ve been working since I was 14. “Adult” just means working and paying for ones debts. Some get to enjoy life and some have to work it away
I think it's an essential lesson to teach children, that the world isn't fair. Teach them to deal with unfairness.
To degrees yes but we don't want them to become victims or playing the victims.....
Yep, @Falruk that's exactly what I did. I told my kids "it's okay for adults, but kids aren't allowed to" for some things. I never pretended the world is fair to my kids lol. It certainly never gave them any reason to play a victim as they are in the same boat as everybody else.
@@knifeyonlinewhat boat is that
WRT cutting cake fair - our house had a rule, one child cuts the portions, the other gets first pick. I'm the younger child and at some point, realised how carefully my brother was making the choice. One day, I started the cut about 5mm to one side, but angled it so it was heavily undercutting the "larger" piece. My brother actually loudly "hah!"'d when he saw what a fool I'd been and grabbed the assumed larger piece... Realised it was cut at about 45 degrees, and went to swap it for the other... At which point my dad, who'd seen it all happen, stepped in and told him he had to take the piece he'd picked. When you're four years younger, the little victories can be big victories.
I never dared do it again, but it was still quite fun seeing how carefully he studied cake slices before picking for the while afterwards.
I'm allergic to milk, and have often not gotten to eat of the cake when friends have birthdays when I was a child, and I remember when I moved out that the realization hit that I can buy a cake to eat whenever I want. I've eaten a bit too many cakes now..
Satisfying handiness/DIY, gardening, and cooking are together with my wife and children the sources of the best feelings in my early/mid-30s.
The biggest problem we adults have is we forget to unwind and have real fun. As children, most of our day was just fun and gave a crap about anything else in life
Great podcast, really enjoyed this one 🤘
This "as children most of our day was just fun and give a crap about anything else in life“ sounds a lot like my financial advisor
Growing up on a farm, I had the best childhood. dirt bikes, rusty old farm cars we were allowed to drive around the farm and tear up the paddocks with as a 12 year old lol. Camping out at the back of the farm. lots of bonfires and home made mud slides down hills. I never wanted to grow up to an adult.
I turned 50 a few days ago, and I feel like a kid most of the time still.
I also cook lots, and do DIY stuff (I built a kitchen in one of my houses), but I still play loads of computer games.
That's largely due to how humans perceive the passage of time. It's all based on ratios. To a typical 4 y.o., a year seems to last forever due to it's being 25% of their life. That same year to a 40 y.o. is only 2.5%. That's why the older we get, the more 'recent' 20-30 years ago seems.
Rowan firing off the letters sounded absolutely radio DJ 😂
I love listening to you all chat. Reminds me of hanging with my m8s back in the day. You give each other room to talk & express yourselves really well, which many podcasts with a bunch of dudes struggle with often.
I think the key thing for being a child to being an adult is as an adult you know you could do whatever it is you want to do, but you have the ability to think about and choose what you should do.
Its kinda funny, I was saying to a friend earlier "you know you feel like an adult when the highlight of your day is that youre favorite bar soap is in stock" 😂❤
The thing I always looked forward to as a kid was not having homework. Have to say, being an adult is pretty awesome on that aspect. It's nice leaving work and NOT having to study or do 3-5 more hours of "mandatory learning for my own good."
...well until something around the house breaks.
Love the podcasts - Last week I had a sobering moment at work. My coworker found a discount program for young adults. I asked if they could share it with me only to be laughed at. They said that it was for people between 18-39...and I just turned 40 last month.
My former supervisor, in her 60s, used to flip me the bird all the time. All in fun of course. Our offices faced each other, and every once in a while, she would call my name, I would look up and there she was, flipping me off. It's so silly and one of the things I miss most about working with her (she's retired).
Loving the Halo behind Rowans head! 😇
Guys... I'll be turning 61 in exactly one month and I still don't quite feel like an adult! Well, not all the time at least - when I must remember to pay the bills of figure out stuff about the house, yeah, then I sure feel like an adult. Too bad that my body is reminding me every now and then that I'm no spring chicken and haven't been for quite a while so I should do a better job of taking care of it, but I'm still standing and having fun and even have the opportunity to do stuff I like and want to do, even though the adulting stuff tends to come in the way!
When I eas a kid I thought that someone would come along on a monumental birthday 8 12, 18,, 21, etc) and tell me the secret of being an adult. I'm 75 and still waiting.
It will be 100 won't it!?
I remember when my mom finally put an N64 on layaway for me. I eventually got through that waiting of I don't know how long and got it. 🤯 What a great couple of years. I'd sneak over to friends' house in the summer while their parents were at work, and we played Ocarina of Time, or there'd be a big group of us at some random neighbors playing Goldeneye. Ah, what great times. ❤
Also, really happy to see THE Bob Bladesong in a plug for merch. Haha.
Seeing a new VLDL podcast episode makes my entire morning! Thank you guys, another great one. 😄
I'd love for there to be an Ellie-cam that they can cut to occasionally, just to see her reaction to some of the ridiculous stuff they talk about here
I love you guys. Watching your pod cast with my morning coffee has become one of my favorite moments
Exactly the things I needed to hear before turning 40 tomorrow 🙈
Good luck. It's all a slippery slide from there. :D
On the topic of fairness as a kid.
I remember having to split a snack with my brother. Also, how CRITICAL it was that the halves were even.
My dad had a clever way of doing this. (I only remember it happening once but it stuck with me.)
I was able to split the snack myself, however I wanted. But! my brother got to pick which half he wanted first.
It encouraged me to be fair, and also I realized that being slightly off wasn't a huge deal.
My birthday is in March so Christmas was always a blast for me. 9 months of 'charge up' to the big day under the tree. Didn't let my parents wallets recharge properly either for my birthday, so the big gifts and major wishes were all fulfilled on christmas.
My nephew on the other hand is born on christmas and he is wildly jealous about others getting a birthday and christmas (twice the fun in his opinion).
Now that I'm 32 my birthday means absolutely nothing to me, while christmas is still a family get together making it stand out more.
Murica here. We 100% have "Kiwi Onion Dip". Not sure what condensed cream is but I'm assuming its what we'd call Sour Cream. Fairy Bread on the other hand...no idea wtf that is! 😄
Yess "French Onion Dip"
Sour cream and condensed cream is different, fairy bread is sprinkles on bread
27, yep, still not an adult, still don't know what I'm doing. Miss being a kid in some ways, don't miss it in others!
Also have that little reminder in my brain sometimes of "wait, I'm an adult, I can do what the fuck I want". I fancied a steak the other night, but just thought "oh well, never mind". Like half an hour later, my brain kicked into gear and I was like "wait, I'm 27, I can just go buy a fucking steak if I want to". So I did, and I cooked it, ate it, and enjoyed it. Being an adult is okay sometimes.
I have 34 years and no idea what I want feom my life really.. I currently started to face my depression, as I have really backed out from life during last years. I am terrified it's me that is the decisive person for my life, lol.
Great podcast!❤ Im 52 and also don't really feel like an adult. I have adult responsibilities as a mom, however my adult kid acts more "adult" then me at times!😊 Love my video games too, and so many hobbies, baby talking to my dogs, that keep me mindfully young. I truly believe its healthy to never fully "grow up" or "adult" too much. Keeping a bit of our younger self with us keeps us grounded imo.
It's funny how we will tell our kids the things we were told when we were kids.... only to be ignored like we did to our parents like yea whatever
Trust me guys - being an adult gets rather boring after a many decades; all that maturity, wisdom, self-sacrifice, selflessness, and all. 🤪
j/k, though I do wish at times I'd had a chance to've been able to act a kid when I actually WAS a kid. Trying to be one after nearly 7 decades makes people wonder your mental stability, you know.
I'm 62, I'll grow up any time soon.

How to be an adult: Just replace "F**k you!" with "That sounds great".
As a kid myself these are good life lessons
Keep up the great content!
I came home from school one day, and my dad had put all of my toys outside and gave them away to random kids in the apartment complex.
Heck, my mother did that too. And my comic books (that I got from my older cousin) were in the trash. Still can't forgive her that...
Video games for me as a kid was the ultimate high. Halo 1-3 at your friends house doing late night split screen shenanigans was the pinnacle of happiness. 28 this year and have yet to have that same level of fun yet 😂
I don't listen to podcasts but I love you guys, keep doing your thing - your one of my aspirations
Kiwi Christmas at the beach during summer holidays, nothing beats it! Best childhood memories - bikes, scooters, Pokemon, Sega, Playstation, sports, comics, cards, chocolate 🎉
Getting out of school for Summer Break was literally my favorite time of the year. No responsibilities. No bedtime. Truly a magical time in life.
There needs to be a bored episode where Mr Whippy pulls up outside the TechTown store and Rowan is excited like a little kid. He asks if anyone wants anything and they're surprised with how nice is behaving. Rowan runs outside and places a massive order, brings it all back into the store, but not before tripping over his untied shoelace and dropping it on the floor. This is when Rowan bursts out in anger 😂
There was a time when it was ' I can't wait to be at the adult table at holidays...and not being a 'kid' anymore" then after college .. it was like "wait that's all there is here -- this is it? "
as for your comment about making a kids style birthday party as an adult. My friend did that for his 30th. it was great! fairy bread, candy everywhere, and even played pass the parcel and music chairs ahaha
I give ya'll hayeaaah, cheers for another podcast, was fun to listen, keep it up! ❣️
I love the whole conversation but, as a medical practitioner, I did get stuck on the dinner conversation, lol. The “early dinner” recommendation pertains to changes in your metabolism throughout the day that have some associated with your circadian rhythm. Therefore, if you are awake during typical daytime hours, it is best to eat prior to 6:00pm as your metabolism will start to slow down in preparation for the “recovery phase” we go into during sleep. Hopefully that helps you guys!
A) Thank you, Rowan and Alan, for the perspective of how devastating "silly" things are for kids. I don't think enough people recognize this .. that it is important to be there and support them in their despair regardless of how minor WE view that thing as.
B) I think I'm the only person ever who loved high school. College was a shit storm of God-only-knows what. But high school was some great times!
I am a similar age to you guys, and Cyberpunk is actually one of the most amazing games I've played in adulthood. The characters, the story, the music. Give it another chance, especially if you played it with all the bugs on launch! 😁
I only ever wanted to get to legal driving age! Get my license and truck and didnt care about future adulthood. And then the bills came.. im 37 now, with twin boys on the way. I think im gunna tell them to remember to slow down and enjoy childhood if they get ancy to grow up.
Congrats Rowan accomplished your childhood fantasy "Doing whatever the f***k you want" in the BORED videos 🤣🤣 .... Love all your content, keep up with your amazing channel.. I'm 42 and I can see that my parents were a bit overreacting, my little one is my treasure and I love every moments and the best is when her face goes brightly surprised full of happiness, that is the best sensation in the world. I still a teenager inside 🤣🤣 and yes now I eat all the ice-cream I want 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think the games that really brought me back in feeling as a kid again were the insomniac Spider-Man games. It always remembers me sitting in front of these old games and still also them made me happy
I think you guyus should do a Dinnercast. Same thing with some nice lighting and having dinner with a glass of wine. Think that would create a diffrent atmosphere that might make the topic quite intresting
7:30 "When you wake up on Christmas as an adult you're like"
*Carl's Jr. ad*
"Yeaaah!"
9:25 Fuck yes, getting an N64 on Christmas is definitely a God-tier childhood memory, and I remember even the adults were amazed by that thing when they saw me playing it. Literally, everyone was in awe of Super Mario 64.
Still love that game! Got my son an emulator so he could play it too, so it's not just rose tinted glasses.
That poster behind Rowan is really cool!
I'm really enjoying these podcasts. Very relatable!
lol, I don't think I made it to the "grown up table" until after I was 25. I remember coming back from college and still sitting with the little kids at meal time, but at the chair closest to the adult table. To be fair the adult table was very small and I was included in grown up conversations.
im 16 i dont want this... ever, i never want to ever have to do adulting
Being 16 forever is not something you would want in the long run.
Short term no but long term it becomes a pain.
I know right. It's my sixth year being 16 and it's starting to be a pain.
Dividing portions between 2 children. Easy when you're at home - one divides, the other chooses.
Holy Nova! Y’all are back!
Rowan built a deck, but he didn't tell us how we protects his deck! Did he seal it? You have to keep your deck dry. I hear Shaeffers has you covered.
For me, with cooking, i get it perfect first time. And then every subsequent time I get something wrong, and sometimes I can’t even figure out what made it wrong.
Baulders Gate and Helldivers 2 has hit that childhood high with video games i haven't felt since a kid.. amazing games! If you haven't you need to play them..lol
My kid is 13 and is still devastated when they drop their ice cream. Ice cream is sacred dammit.
I myself am 38 and I’m devastated when something happens to my coffee that makes it undrinkable.
Getting my mind blown by the dinner time.. 6:30pm is me leaving work.. Dinner at 7:30pm at best. Usually 8pm.
Me wearing my flame hoodie with the cuffs wearing out... wishing y'all made a windbreaker with the flame on the back!!! That would be sick. Saving up to get something new soon... ❤
You guys are good at this! I enjoy listening
That is the first time I heard the fireworks referred to as that outside of South Africa, thanks Rowan
I'm in my early 50s (LOVE your scale, Adam *wink, wink) and quite often have moments (and it's usually while with my grown up kids) where I say, "HELP! I need an adult!" As Billy Connolly says, "I'm too old to die young". Getting old is a privilege, growing up is optional.
Love these conversations!
i think every big CZcamsr or youtube group should make a video like this because im a child rn (13) and i could learn alot and when children like me at my age get mad at thier parents they come to their favourite CZcamsrs for entertainment and if more videos like this come to pop up it will be great for the audience and the younger genoration thats watching and teach them on how to live life better and with less regrets, i love Viva La Dirt League keep up the amazing work!
You want to find yourself a copy of a song called "Everybody's free (To wear sunscreen)" by Baz Luhrmann. The older I got the more I realised that everything said it was stone cold truth. :)

Dude that neon VLDL logo is sick, I would totally buy one lol
Honestly, I'm turning 37 boys. Hearing the dial up tones 😆 🤣
No one needs to search we were told etc. VLDL is amazing. Anyone that knows you tells others about how amazing the channel is. Your quality content speaks for itself.
the only game that took me straight back to my childhood was that new ratchet and clank, wasn't going to get it i was like nah im too old im 30. i had a great time
Legends!
Wait till your in your 40's and up and your birthday comes along and you forget how old you are by a few digits...i do this to myself all the time! One year i was telling people i was 52 for the whole yr, only to realize i was actually 51 when my birthday rolled around...🤣
14:30 I STILL feel I'm not valuable enough at 45. Wanted to be an adult cause in Junior High and High School I was bullied and really had no friends, still don't.
You still have to ask permission as an adult, if you have kid's. Finding someone to babysit so you may go out. And Life still isn't fair as an adult either.
This episode is freaking ridiculous 😂EVERYONE was very naughty 😅
Going out and buying my first new car. I drove off with it like "so I just have this now? They let me take this???"
My kids have not once sat at a kids table. And I think that is a good thing.
That doesn't sound anything like the Birthday parties we have here in America. Generally a kids birthday party has like hotdogs or burgers or some other easy to make food and a birthday cake. Balloons and streamers and presents.
Every group like yours needs to include someone like me (51 yo) that tell you that you haven’t yet begun to feel old. LOL
WHOA. I wasn't the only 51 year-old thinking that???
omg 11 episodes? has anybody ever done that many episodes of a podcast before?
I'm still holding out for another GT use announce in one of your videos 😂!
Being an adult is simply having to take more responsibility for yourself and your own living situation. Everything else is just how you play it.
