Have you ever experienced burnout? It can happen to anyone. Last year, we may have overcommitted ourselves by adding a studio-build onto our already hectic schedule - and you guessed it, we're experiencing burnout as a result.
According to Web MD, Burnout is a form of exhaustion caused by constantly feeling swamped, and it's a result of excessive and prolonged emotional, physical, and mental stress.
We're lucky to have the job we do, but we're still affected by things like burnout and so we want to have a chat about how we've been affected and what we're doing to help ourselves, in case it's helpful to you.

Im recovering from a burnout. 16 months ago my brain stopped working. My cognitive function just stopped working. I couldnt remember a thing, forgot how to drive, couldnt stand lights and sounds, especially female high voices. Grocery shopping was a hell, i had panic attacks in public. Really awfull. After the smallest house choirs i needed sleep..
The thing that bothered me the most is that im not on the level i was. Its like playing a game being level 50 and being degraded to level 4 and being unable to get to level 5. Just grinding and grinding not leveling up. Felt so empty for the longest time. Like a mandatory loser potion with a debuff that gives you -150% xp and a forced sleep period after a raid or chopping wood.

Im diagnosed by multiple professionals. Best is to look at a scientific article about burnout. Burn out is a pretty popular concept nowadays and there is a lot of misonformation about the subject. The symptoms can differ in severity. However, its basicly youre body and mind being to tired to go on, so its shutting down. Youre body and mind will shut down, there is no more "just do one more step" or "just finish this one thing". The recoverytime is at least 6months with minor symptoms to 2+ years with more severe symptoms.

Burnout is bad. I've been on the edge of it, my mom actually got it, spoke to people who had it. Got a friend who might get it soon. Many people who cross the boundary and get burnt out, just wake up and are literally unable to get out of bed; being so stressed that your body shuts down physically. And the recovery takes years.
I've started deleting apps that I don't really like and just distract, or taking away notification privileges if apps don't have an option to turn off push notifications and post them too often. And I try to read more physical books rather than watch videos or play games on my phone in bed.

Some people just smack blindly at full speed into the wall. Some people _do_ notice some of its symthoms a bit earlier though, which _can_ enable them to some extent "brace for impact". But some of the latter still aren't able to do so, or don't realize the connection in time. So they still end up ramming into that wall while either looking on helplessly, unable to find the brake, or while looking out the other windows trying to find any other causes than what's right in front of them.
For the vast majority of people burnout _develops_ gradually. But _because_ it is most commonly induced by extensive, persistent, medium to long term stress revolving around something that requires tons of your constant attention - that inherent nature of the beast renders a huge blind spot towards the same. Making many oblivious to it coming for them right up until they feel the teeth of its jaws clamp around their neck.

I have separate work and personal phones. Work phone gets turned off when the work day ends. Most people at work also have my personal number, but they never use it unless there's an actual emergency or for things that are not work related. Personal phone has all "here's a new thing to check out" type notifications disabled. Unless it's a personal message from someone directly to me, or a smart home notification (e.g. laundry done, so I remember to get the dryer going), I don't see it until I intentionally open the relevant app to check. Well, that's probably not entirely true, but whatever apps remain unblocked so rarely pop up a notification I can't even come up with an example at the moment. When I head to bed, my phone and (smart) watch are turned off and left in the living room.
For me, this wasn't a "I need to disconnect for my mental health" type thing. I wasn't really bothered or in danger of burning out or anything. I just found the constant distractions and bleeps for attention to be annoying. It was living life as if trying to watch a movie with a commercial break every five minutes.

How to not get burnt out: work little instances of self-care into every day, as often as possible. That can be something like doing pushups between meetings, having tea from a fancy tea set, caring for plants in your cubicle/office/desk, go outside for your lunch break (and eat lunch at your desk to maximize time outside, or sit in your car away from everyone!), etc. Also keeping up with hygiene, hydrating, and sleeping enough do SO MUCH for staving off burn out.

I'm 29, with partner, no kids. Recently went through burn-out. September 2023 I called in sick and I started building up hours at work last week again. Now that I am mostly through it, I sleep well. But I sleep well because I have the energy to spend my day's well. With that I mean: I have the mental capacity to spend my time offline, to take good care of myself, hygiene, movement, etc. Since a few weeks I feel well rested and mentally quite relaxed. One tip I would like to share: get an offline hobby that requires very little brainpower, but allows you to literally create something. It gives satisfaction, gives your brain the time to start processing all the things from the day which probably will help to fall asleep sooner and sleep better, and with a bit of luck you build up a real-world skill. I find old crafts are really good for this. They require mostly time, but not that much brain power. I would love to feel like this the rest of my life, but I know that is very, very hard to achieve IF I want to live life like most people do today. And it is so easy to get sucked into that lifestyle.
I agree with Adam, it's not catch-up. Maybe it was for a bit, but it's the way we live. How we NEVER, for a moment, are alone or without someone wanting something from us, mainly digitally. Our brain does not get a break. With burn-out I had to take that break, and luckily people were very understanding and it showed me again, as did the covid-time that I (and I am convinced, most people) flourish with a bit slower pace of life, but mostly being fully in the present, without the constant temptation of notifications etc. It's healing for your brain.
I also agree with Rowan that covid was for me personally a blissfull time. I've never felt so at peace in my entire (adult?) life.
Sorry for the wall of text.

It allows you to do something that makes you feel like you're fulfilling a purpose and completing tasks (get that dopamine AND oxytocin) and allows your reward system to prioritize it over time and eventually it helps you become accustomed to being able to just put it all away and focus on the people around you and the you around you (not an end-all be-all but should work for most people) just my opinion after 10 years as a medic making observations of myself and others.

My burnout appeared the moment when I was trying to figure out a schedule of both “getting married abroad with a foreigner” (almost no one could help me with it) and massive work roadmap schedules that were suddenly moved to that year (including the whole company IT infrastructure moving to a new location with new devices (migrations); again, alone).
I managed to do EVERYTHING. I wasn’t able to enjoy my wedding ceremony (or the following events) at all.
At that moment, I could’ve either end the whole plan of getting married at all or just pushed it at least 5 years ahead (five years of utter pointless feeling saving up money).

13:55 I'm 25 and I honestly feel either burned out or at the brink of burnout. I'm in a similar position to Alan where my only real me-time is when our 8 month old goes to bed so after 7pm or 8pm. After that I usually stay up until about midnight playing video games or watching TV with my wife and I'll do the baby's dishes before shower and bed. Baby wakes up at 6am or 7am so I wake up pretty tired. I've also been working on two theses (master's on my major and bachelor's on my minor), I had my final teaching practice period this winter and there's also the rest of the schoolwork at uni
I've experienced pretty severe study related stress for many years before but now I think it might actually be burnout

4 10 hour days is the most ideal work schedule. Having worked 3 12s, 4 10s, and also 5 8s I can attest.
That said, this isn't even touching on the idea of mandatory overtime which is pretty norm in a lot of situations. You talk about needing those 2 days off to recover from burnout but what about when you are consistently working 6 or 7 days. Burnout is almost inevitable at that point.

    On your question at 13:47:
I‘m 25 and I can relate to the phone thing a lot. There was times I used to doomscroll for hours on an almost daily basis. Whenever I had a split second of waiting time anywhere my hand went into auto pilot to pull out my phone and open social media. I only managed to get it under control by deleting Instagram and CZcams from my phone (gladly I never got into TikTok). Now I only access those apps from my tablet. This way I have much more control because I use them more consciously and I can only access them when I have wifi.
I guess what also comes in handy is that I have a really deep sleep so I can’t leave my phone next to my bed at night or I will turn off the alarm without actually waking up in the morning. I need to charge it at a different spot in my room so I generally don’t have the problem of using my phone in bed.

When someone asks "What do you do?" and you don't want to talk about work, answer with a hobby, "I'm an artist" "I'm a musician" whatever it is. If we don't want work to define us it really doesn't have to. Its more down to the answers people give than the questions we ask.
If you asked an enlightened monk "What do you do?" he probably has many tasks and chores but he would never mistake them for his purpose.

21:00 Little-talked about, house work is unpaid labor, especially if there are children involved. Like an unpaid live-in maid + nanny who gets housing and food, is financially reliant on their "boss"/partner, and who would have a hard time leaving if it was an abusive relationship because they don't have a job to pay for their expenses. Respect to unpaid domestic workers.
34:45 All of that is stuff that is endemic to a system where you are defined by what you do, not human nature. The "putting people in a box" thing is an adaptation to the systems that provide a way to relate to each other based on what is normal for the system: you are what you do. If we were to change systems so that people could do what they want rather than what's necessary to put food on the table or live comfortably, then the ways that we try to relate to each other would likewise change to be about more personal things than what our profession is, or use the fact that most of us don't have time or resources to do the things we like to fish for what our actual interests are. It means moving away from capitalism, but too many people don't wanna do that for shortsighted and often misinformed (brainwashed) reasons that are endemic to systems which rely on people being constantly desperate and afraid of losing their place in one or more hierarchies.

I knew that I was making a lot of money and that in order to replace that level of income I might have to take another job but there was no way I would make it. I could feel my health getting worse. I had hardly any time for family, for my kids, or for anything but work. I still feel some guilt over giving up that income, but my personal life is much better, my health is much better, and we may be struggling financially but that can be overcome with planning and budgeting. It was well worth what I gained to give up what I lost.

21:00 I think a big issue is that, before, those kind of situations where people stayed for longer or dedicated a lot (arguably too much) to their job was mostly reserved for passionate people. Who kinda wanted that to some degree.
The problem is that now it’s expected in many job. Even jobs that are just the bare minimum to just survive nowadays. How could you expect someone who took that job only to eat to be passionate, work over hours, be amazing and inspiring ? When he doesn’t even get much opportunities to climb the ladder and poor financial perks in return ?
Some managerial positions are just completely dissociated from reality I think. I know many people who work just to eat, they don’t like their job. So of course when it’s time to leave they leave, and if whatever better opportunity shows up they change their job. And that’s good.
That shouldn’t be considered anti work, even if I understood what you meant. I think that’s just rebalancing expectations. Someone is passionate and want to work a lot to reach new opportunities ? Nice. Someone just want to work his hours and come back home to enjoy time with his family ? Totally fine as well.

Worse even than asking someone's age. I think it's safer just to gossip about others or talk about the weather. Or play "would you rather", of course. 😇
