Wilson Combat SFX9 Handgun Review

  • The SFX9 from Wilson Combat is essentially an upgraded version of their EDC X9 handgun. The difference is that the SFX9 has a solid frame. The flat-sided frame feels a bit Glockish, but the grip angle is pure 1911. And, like all 1911-style handguns, the SFX9 is a single-action semi-auto outfitted with a manual thumb safety. However, like the EDC X9, the SFX9 does not have a grip safety. The trigger on this pistol was superb, the sights were excellent for fast defensive work, and the action cycled with impeccable smoothness.

Completely agree with this review. I have both a 4" and 3.25" SFX, and can say these a flat out the best guns I've ever owned. And I have more than a few customized Glocks and 1911's and the SFX is everything mentioned in this review. It's worth noting that the review spends a lot of time on the user interface, and rightly so. The sights, the placement of the mag eject button, the feel of the grips, the feel of the gun, the positive safety, the trigger reset it's all the way it should be. I wanted to buy a Staccato C2, but it never felt right. I knew instantly when I handled the Wilson "this is the one". My 3.25" has the "extreme dehorn" (move beveling to the side) and it is a perfect CCW weapon. My 4" could be a great CCW weapon, but I use it mostly as a house gun and as the gun I shoot Steel Challenges with. Love these SFX 9's and would recommend them to anyone.

I've also been checking out (online since i can't find any of these in person) BUL armory sas II ultralight or the new Staccato CS. I know "worth" is a subjective thing. @@SinCityVillain Hey, I can speak from personal experience. I was all set to buy a C2 (I think that’s what it was) about this time last year. Problem was I had never held one. The owner of my favorite LGS let me handle his. I knew instantly that the grips would not work with my medium hands. Later last year I was in the same shop and handled the Wilson EDC X9 which felt much better. Than they showed me the SFX9 and I knew it would work. I hope you can find a place near you that has one so you can handle it. For me, the SFX9 fits my hand even better than a single stack 1911. My hands are medium so not sure what to say about small hands. You really should try and find one to hold before buying any of the ones you mentioned.

It's a refined gun no doubt about it and a lot of handwork goes into it. I look at the SFX9 the same way I look at a Manurhin MR-73 Gendarmerie. Some people like finely made things. Lots of people do all kinds of things to Glocks and the price tag goes up. I will not even go into hunting rifles, god knows how much money I spent getting a rifle I bought off the rack to be just right for me. It's part of the hobby. Wilson makes a good gun, is it worth the price tag, I guess it is since they sell every one they make and the company has grown a lot in the last two decades. I want a Manurhin MR 73 Gerndamerie, and I have been saving for it for the last year and a half, I have just about enough money to buy one along with a proper holster, speed loaders, and 2000 rounds of 357 Mag ammo. I am by no means wealthy or anything like that, I just set a goal for myself and I just do what I need to do to get to that goal. The inflation that is going on is a factor but all good things come for those who are willing to put of the here and now for something great in a little while. I shoot a Glock 19 since I retired a Browning High Power some years back and yeah I did some things to it to make it better- the damn hobby is a license to burn money.

Not sure if I buy the "what is your life worth" argument when trying to justify the ridiculous cost of a handgun. Are you telling me that a glock 19 wouldn't perform just as well in a defensive situation when compared to this handgun? I have a hard time believing that. You can get a firearm that's going to do the job flawlessly for 1/6 the cost. Sure, this wilson combat is a nice firearm, but it's a luxury item and commands a higher price because of small details with diminishing returns, not because it's any better in a defensive situation when compared to other similar firearms.

As much as i like this gun, I hate it when people say you can't put a price on your life. The truth is, yes you can. One does not need to own $1k + guns to save themselves from self defense shooting, just ask Elisjsha Dicken... A reliable firearm these days can get you from $400 dollars. I do own "expensive" guns like SCAR 17, Staccato P etc. I didn't buy these guns to save my life. To me, it sounds like an excuse to purchase high end products to justify the price.

Can anyone suggest an alternative to this firearm from any company other than Wilson Combat?
I did not find Wilson Combat warranty support in line with their sales price or "hype". I purchased 3 magazines for my 1911, none of which fit (my owner's manual pictures Wilson Combat magazines). I returned 2 to the retailer. The 3rd, upon the advice of my gun dealer and wanting desperately to believe the Wilson Combat hype, I modified by filing the release slot. This modification was required just to be able to seat/release the magazine. After seating the magazine, I experienced multiple misfeeds and found the magazine unsafe/unusable. I asked Wilson Combat for a refund, but of course I was denied, due to having made a modification. Oddly, they told me I should have informed them of the misfeeding before I filed the release slot ... yet I'm not sure how you get a misfeed if you can't even seat the magazine. After watching this video, I asked Wilson Combat if they would discount me the magazine cost ($40) on the purchase of an ECD 9X which lists at $3200 before options. They would not. Nor did they suggest sending me a spare magazine with a purchased ECD X9. I'm left holding junk and dissatisfied with even the simplest of technical replies. And why would they ask what gun dealer recommended my magazine modification if they weren't going to work with me on an accommodation...why waste my time pretending you're interested? I'm in the market for and EDC and requesting help for anything but a Wilson Combat model. Thanks!

  • @mondaymorningquarterback1584

I’d be happy if Wilson would just make an aluminum frame based on a Glock 19, designed to accept the Glock 26 slide/barrel. A Glock 26X with their solid frame would be winning combination for an everyday carry gun.

The Wilson EDC X9 guns are quite a departure from a traditional 1911. And all for the better:
-9mm 1911s are over lugged and over railed. This gun isn’t.
-9mm 1911s use radial locking lugs that are more susceptible to fouling. The X9 guns lock on the hood like a Glock. Read more reliable.
-1911s use a spring steel extractor that is generally considered a weak point in the design. The X9 used an external extractor that is more robust and easily replaced with no tuning.
-x9 drops the grip safety. The bane of many shooters.
-the x9 drops the staked plunger tube that is easily damaged on 1911s, and used a much stronger milled part that is dovetailed into place. No gunsmith needed.
-X9 uses a modern magazine tube that was designed from the ground up around the 9mm round. Way more reliable and durable than a lot other double stack 1911 offerings.
-That small 9mm mag allows for a small 9mm frame that holds 15 or 18+1. All without being stupid fat like all 2011 guns that stuff 9mm into a 45 caliber footprint.
In short, and to your point, this gun isn’t just an iteration of a 1911. This thing is proprietary IP from the ground up if an entirely new gun.
Nobody but wilson makes this gun. Nobody but wilson has ANYTHING even close design wise to this gun.
Is it a 1911? I say yes from a 1911 shooter’s perspective. Inside, it’s way different. Way better.

What's you life worth? What a ridiculous statement. Anything less than a 3000 dollar handgun, and your putting your life in jeopardy. Pandering to Wilson Combat, probably for a kickback.

    Great looking gun
But no matter what you say, $3000 is way over the price. U know it & I know it.
But as long as there are Fools out there to pay that price , therefore u automatically believe it's worthy 😉.
My proof is that look at our 👮‍♂️ cops, FBI, CIA , etc etc , do they carry $3000 to $5000 guns to save their life & everyone else. They carry the most effective Gun that they depend on & it's way way way way less then $3000.
    By the way:
    I approve this message.

No, you're just ignorant. Just because a screwdriver and a saw are both tools doesn't mean they're the same. A Glock is not a premium firearm hand fitted with billet tool steel internals all hand fitted to the tinyist of tolerances and fully customizable from the factory.

That's all BS, Which is good Tactics for fools to expend that much money to satisfy themselves for whatever is missing in their life.
I see fools pay 40,000 for Rolex just because of its name, I also know
U can get the same watch performance using Citizen watches,
There are lots of hand made Guns, go to third world countries, lots of hand made guns fool.
As I said, as long there are Fools like U, there be Markets for $5000 had made guns.
      Lol.

Many officers of law use staccato those are 2500$ Texas rangers to mention just one… and our folks in blue get a discount for a firearm they trust to protect all our lives.

Okay I love Wilson combat ❤️ but they are to full of themselves and should get real if they want to expand sales make money, sorry but u can put out an awesome weapon that’s in reach of common dofus. Nobody is asking cheapo or less quality but Wilson need’s to reevaluate the direction for the future instead of bogus pomp. Hard times are ahead adapt or die ❤️

If you're asking for cheaper, you're asking for less quality. Or you don't understand the industry well enough to comment with valid opinion. Which is it?
      "Adapt or die"
There will be no adaptation. Only compliance or death.

Your premise is flawed. Hard times don't apply to most Wilson combat customers. I own 4 of them with a Vickers Elite on order. For me if I lose one in self defense I will just go buy another. Not trying to be a dick, just the way things are.

    • @danielhenderson8316

So Wilson Combat is already backlogged on orders and their expanding their manufacturing capabilities doing everything you say they shouldn't do? That's probably why Bill Wilson runs a multimillion dollar company and you're a nobody on the internet.
