My First Time Backpacking in the Snow

- With no experience hiking in the winter, and very little backpacking at all, I figured it would be fun to tackle a snow-covered trail in -12 degree weather.
I hiked a trail in Ohio called the Zaleski South Loop: Moonville rail Trail.
Also I said -12 degrees above which is in Celsius to sound more dramatic. That's 10 degrees Fahrenheit, which is still way too cold, but still, just sayin.
Quick tips other than bring super warm clothes/sleeping bag:
- Trekking poles are great in the snow
- Water freezes (who knew)
- Don't fall into creeks

“Nighttime is a problem for later me.”
I have never felt a statement in my soul more.
Lol, im glad to have you on my side
Your narration is wonderful, it's the perfect balance of interesting and background noise! I think this channel may convince me to go try backpacking :)
Thanks! I love to hear that
Definitely skinwalker tracks 😂 one time I went camping it was 4° out and my sleeping mat got a hole in it so I was basically sleeping on The Frozen ground all night. Definitely the worst camping experience I've ever had and I've also been flooded several times 😅
Ohh boy, oh boy, that sounds like a lovely time lol. I think if that happened to me, I would have just called it a night, packed up, and hiked back in the dark haha
@@MinnowTank I guess we're pretty stubborn in our car wasn't too far from us and we decided to tough it out 😂 if that ever happens again you better believe I'm hiking back lol
Your are quite perceptive @NickandRachel . Or maybe just Rachel. A bear or a skinwalker walking like a bear? Good try skinwalker!
@@georgcuro 😂
It’s always a good idea to bring some duct table or could work for a night
Always carry extra socks. Your feet are as important as food and water. Also, practice making a fire, so that you can look after your feet and potentially have warmth.
This style of video production is very reminiscent of the Dick Proenneke videos. Great scenery with lighthearted narration. A tried and true method. 10/10
Love doing these smaller hikes when you crash wherever you decide. Always the hardest getting up in the morning! Great video, looking forward to more!
Thank ya! And yeah, packing everything up in the morning especially when its freezing cold is rough. But, im definitely looking forward to exploring many more trails!
Man I’m a fan of your channel. Your narration is so good.
Why thank ya!
I hope to see more adventure videos from you, the vibes and editing are top notch!
Hey, Great Video. Just a quick tip. I keep my boots in my sleeping bag over night for drying and keeping them warm. Have fun with your future adventures!
This channel is going to boom, I can already see it!
Great work man!
there is that anime where they camp in winter called Yuru Camp this video kind of felt like an episode of it. Cant wait for your video of your first time backpacking in the scorching heat in summer.
Really love your energy and narration style ❤
I hope to keep seeing your adventures in the future
I understand the frozen shoe part. Once during the winter, I fell into a giant creek and got my legs soaked. That night at camp, I went to bed super early because my feet were so cold. When I woke up, the laces were so frozen that I could pull them up and they'd hold their shape like pipe cleaners. Thankfully, that was the last day and we were taking a shorter route out, since one of my friends injured himself the day before. My feet were completely numb the whole way back.
Yepp thats wild. The winter doesnt mess around
Your videos are amazing dude! Hope to see you do more hiking/backpacking videos!
You convey such a cozy vibe.
your voice is perfect for narration its very soft and friendly
Awesome to see new people out in the hiking community. Welcome. Tip wrap Walmart plastic bags around your feet to help keep them dry. Also you should come to the Sam Houston National park and try the Lone Star trail in TX. February, March and September, October are really nice here.
Bags could have been helpful, i like that. Also sweet, ill check that spot out and see if I can make it!
Great experience. Im looking forward to your next trip. A tip van be a s,al cushion for your butt of a helinix ground chair. Its increases 500grams bit Michel more comfortable.
this may be one of my new favorite channels!
this video was awesome thanks this summer i’m going to try to go backpacking
I love your casual sense of humor, subbed for sure.
Awesome videos man please keep it up! Great style and great humor
Love you videos man, hiking is my favorite outdoors hobby. Keep up the great work!
Nice vids man. Looking forward to seeing more stuff from you this spring!
Just subscribed. Really impressed with your two videos so far and appreciate your sense of humor and honesty.
Found you like 30 mins ago, and i´m already in love with this channel.
Cant wait for more!
Watched both of your videos! They were so enjoyable. I hope you make more this upcoming season 😊
Love your editing style and narration. :) Nice to relax and watch a calm video after a stressful day!
I love these camping videos, keep them coming!
definitely one of my new favorite youtubers, can't wait to see what you make next!
I love your videos! I hope you have many more to come.
I love your channel and both videos man, keep it up.
I loved the video! If you were to continue doing more winter camping I would highly suggest investing in a hot tent, those things are life savers.
A hot tent sure woulda been cozy. Also thanks a bunch!
What's the feeling you have now that you followed what your heart desired, faced your fears and came out victorious? 😊
Id say mostly relieved I didnt lose a foot haha. But its always really great finishing a hike, whatever the size 🙂
@@MinnowTank Haha understandable. That's a great answer to the question 👍 thanks 😊
it's great to see you improve when backpacking. Hopefully you keep this hobby up, because its fun to explore the outdoors! Great video
You are an entertaining storyteller.
Thank you for the video and sharing your experience! Love this kind of content, very relaxing as well
Much appreciated!
I hope you continue doing videos like this, it was amazing
That Garfield was pretty scary! Lol!!! Glad your foot and eyeballs came back with you! Great video!
Cool and chill video👍
Love you’re videos, hope to see more of them!
This was so chill!
Saturday, February 10th: Today is the Chinese Lunar New Year, Year of the Dragon! Glad you had a good hike! Happy Trails! Ross08
Stoked to see the continued hiking adventures n shit. False Cape State Park near Virginia Beach is an awesome spot, no dispersed camping allowed but you can hike in and reserve a site. Sleeping like 20 yards from the beach and everything
Ooo that sounds right up my alley. Im adding it to my list right now, solid rec!
Love this channel!!!!
I cant believe this is your second video, the narration was so good and kept me entertained. keep going and imma support u!
Love this!
Very underrated channel
I can't wait to see the next journey you go on 🏕
An awesome winter adventure... Super fun... I've never camped in the winter but do (winter) kayak some our Northern Michigan rivers... Great work and thanks, Jim ✌️
That sounds super cool! Id love to start kayaking - I bet thats a lot of fun and especially beautiful in northern michigan
Such a beautiful atmosphere my friend, masterfully narrated!
Thank ya thank ya!
I love following skinwalker prints in the snow 🥰
your editing is so good dude!
Your videos are amazing keep it up and i want even more to get back out
the reference photo of the scarf on your face is amazing. great video! hope to see more of your trips.
Haha thanks! I only provide the most accurate representations
man your doing the stuff I wish I had the time and money to do
A tip for the next cold trip. Bring something plastic or something similar to wrap around your sleeping bag, it will keep the heat isolated
i need more videos like this
Wow, your channel is so amazing. I can’t believe you’ve only made two videos. You’re a pro at this.
Much appreciated!
If you’re ever in the area i would recommend mushroom rock near Chattanooga Tennessee, it’s so beautiful. Theres other hikes on the mountain its on called signal mountain, and i would recommend it 150 percent!
Ooo I’ll have to check it out!
Really solid stuff
Very nice keep going please! Greetings from Germany ❤
love the videos please make more
What a fantastic video, and also that bad tent pitch 😂
Haven’t watched this yet but I’m so excited you dropped another video. Your first backpacking video was perfection. Even the equipment you had spoke volumes. Do you have any other social media accounts aside from CZcams?
Hey thanks, i hope you enjoy this one too! Right now I dont have any other social media, mostly because idk what id do with them, but if I find a reason, then ill make sure to try and get the word out!
@@MinnowTank amazing again!!! Super excited for your future adventures. I would recommend some gaiters for more winter adventures. But keep it up!
I live in Lancaster ohio. Zaleski is surely on my list to go check out, thanks for the great video!
Great video! You seem to be on the East Coast, you should try out Dolly Sods or Cranberry Wilderness, West Virginia for some great unique hiking. Its climate and environment is the same as Canada because its the highest plateau east of the Mississippi!
Thanks! Im actually looking to go to dolly sods next! Im super excited and just waiting for the weather to match up with my schedule, so that will be lots of fun
@@MinnowTankNice! I will be up there in June, might run into ya!
another awesome video dude! if you dont mind me asking what do you record off of?
Thanks! Right now I just record off of my iphone. I have a tiny tripod that I strap around one of my trekking poles which works alright, but also falls over a lot haha
love these videos! i know there's only 2 so far but i instantly subbed from the first one. i'm curious, do you take walks or use the treadmill much on the regular? i had been walking a decent amount prior to winter, but now we're in spring and i've completely fallen off. i want to go on hikes and eventually a trip like this (though in a warmer season haha) but i know i must build up to it
Thanks, and I hope your hikes this year go great! For me personally, im decently active whether it be weightlifting or just casually playing sports outside, so its hard to say how much of an impact thats had on my hiking, but as long as you slowly build up your miles then you should be set!
Def pack some stuff to make some warm drinks for those long cold nights. Maybe u thought about this and decided against but it helps mentally and physically at night in the winter. One propane tank and a stove top can go a long way. Love your videos man. Keep it up. Very inspiring.
Yeah I may have to pick up a stove at some point because a hot chocolate would have gone a long way. Also thanks a bunch, very much appreciated!
Lovely video! In the future if you're eyes continue to get cold maybe grab a sleep mask to cover them. I'm extremely excited to see where you decide to go next!
A sleep mask woulda been helpful, I must say. Also thanks! Im looking forward to whatever comes next too
I’m 25 from NY and feel like im hanging with one of the boys when I watch your channel. Great content!
Ayy thats amazing, I appreciate that!
A tip for avoiding the cold shoes: Put a bottle of hot water in them to warm them up before putting them on. You'll probably need to heat the water while you're out there, unless you have a thermos that can keep it hot long enough.
I’ll definitely bring some sort of stove or fire next time i head out into the freezing cold and give this a go. Who woulda thunk heat would have been useful haha
Grand Teton is gorgeous
very cosy video brother
So glad to be an og here
Try a fire next trip!!🎉
ohio!!! you got yourself a new ohioan subscriber
Ohiooo lets gooo!
what tent do you use and whats the cost?
Its the durston x-mid 1 and costs $240! That doesnt include any of the poles though, so if you dont have trekking poles, then you would either have to get those separately or the extra pole add on that the tent has for a bit more money.
Got a sub for me I watched both ur videos, very entertaining
Will they be a Spring backpacking video? If so I can't wait to watch
They definitely will be! Im trying to get a nice weekend with good weather and leaves/flowers popping up. Fingers crossed it happens soon because im excited!
please do continue making videos :)
Not sure I could solo in a known haunted area, but can def solo in snow/winter in a shorter safe trail depending on weather.
Which Camera U use ?
I just used my iPhone for this one! Nice and easy
Loved the video! When is your next upload coming out?
Well since you asked, I’ll upload one today
@@MinnowTank can't talk about better timing then that!
👌🏽
👌
schweet
Dude your narration is funny as fuck hahah
I hope your gonna blow up! (subscriber wise, not literally)
Pheww, that was a close call. Thanks for the last minute clarification!
you should start cooking on a campfire in those videos bro
I do suggest a version of the thumbnail where you walk, like in the first video, because i almost didn't catch that this video is about to be an adventure like the previous one
Solid point, I never really thought about that!
get yourself a flextail mini pump for inflating your pad, never have i regretted the tiny weight of it
That could be a really nice lil improvement
@Tankthey are alsp great for bellows'ing a fire you are trying to start, sooo much better than blowing on it the old fashioned way. I also find it convenient that the pump i have also has a flashlight integrated . (edit): also if your socks arent already wool socks, make the upgrade immediately. Darn Tough is a good sock to start with and has a life time no questions asked replacement policy.
Come to the UK and ill take you storm camping 😜
Lol that sounds like a nightmare…im on my way
@@MinnowTank haha great video btw 😎
Thank ya, very much appreciated!
camp at pictured rocks
Skinwalkers?!!
I wouldnt worry about it
Please make more videos
commenting for the algorith
Mvp
A piece of advice next time don't blow the sleeping pad with your mouth because it absorbs moisture and the R value won't be the same in reality
Ohh thats good to know, thank ya!
first
Shoot, you beat me to it
The video has beautiful visuals and I love your narration style! I hope you keep making videos, seeing the progress you’re making is making me want to get out there more often…
Thanks a bunch! You should definitely try to get out there more! Honestly its comments like these that encourage me to get out more, so im glad its working both ways haha
@@MinnowTank Tomorrow I’m going out on a hike so thank you for the inspiration haha, looking forward to the next video!
