Ohh adding ‘Never Whistle at Night’ I’m half Thai and my mom always told me to not whistle at night but didn’t know it was a common horror/ scary superstition among other cultures so I’m excited to learn more 🥰

I just finished Never Whistle at Night and it was such a good spooky season read! The stories are the perfect length for a short read, or you can read a few in a row. Lots of good societal topics covered, and some classic ghost stories!

I hate when books have a technical, "normal" reason for why things were eerie or scary. It takes away from the whole suspense of the book to have that plain explanation at the end. That was my problem with The Stranger Upstairs by Lisa M. Matlin. I didn't want things tied up neatly with a bow at the end. That ruins a thriller for me. 🤪

Rainy days are great for getting a lot of in house things done that you keep putting off but other than that I would prefer it to be sunny daily.

I’ve been really deliberating picking up Mexican gothic and this confirmed that i am going to give it a pass!
I feel like Mexican Gothic is hit or miss for a lot of people because it's framed as a scary thriller when it's just not. It's a bummer that it's marketed as scary because it's really more a way to "talk back" to the Romantic Gothicism and use that super stereotypically white genre to discuss colonialism. I definitely went in thinking I was supposed to be scared, only to realize it's all a veiled critique of how scary and gross eugenics and colonialism can be. Which, yes, scary, for other reasons but not quite what I thought the novel would be. Still loved it, though!
