      If Retro Games does make an A500 Maxi, then I hope that they put a real built in floppy disk drive on it that can read both double density disks (for Amiga 500 floppy disk games) and high density disks (for disks with Amiga games downloaded onto them). It would also be cool if the A500 Mini had USB floppy drive support sometime in the future.

    Much as I love these Commodore computers being 're-imagined' in these forms - and I do have nostalgic feelings toward them, I'd love to see Retro Games look at the equivalent Atari models; the 800/800XL, or the XE series, and then the ST computers.... these were amazing machines back then, and don't get anywhere near the attention that they deserve: Each computer could do certain things that the other couldn't...but software devs always found clever ways around the differences to get games as equal as possible; Either that, or they'd just go off any create a totally different version of the same game title...!! 😁

      I don't imagine it would be that difficult to take the mini out of the case and mash it into a full size case with a keyboard designed to look authentic. Expensive for the first person to do it, due to the cost of the keyboard (cases exist), but not "hard" in any technical sense. And once the tooling for the keyboard is paid off, it won't be that expensive for everyone else.

    • @AmartharDrakestone
      @AmartharDrakestone Před 2 lety

      It's not a question of games being pre-configured. My guess is that the internal emulator is just configured to pass USB gamepad inputs as joystick inputs, so any game that supports Amiga joysticks should work with this gamepad (or any other standard USB gamepad or joystick).

    • @matp8493

    • @AmartharDrakestone
      @AmartharDrakestone Před 2 lety

      @@matp8493 Don't know why you would want to configure anything, since most Amiga joysticks only supported 1 fire button, and only some supported 2 buttons. Their previous mini (the C64 mini/maxi) didn't need configurations, since C64 joystick games only supported one button. For games that didn't support a joystick they had the on-screen keyboard or you could connect your own USB keyboard (the mini version) or use the unit's keyboard (the maxi version).
      I guess you could make them pass joystick inputs as keyboard inputs, but that would have to be done externally and on a game by game basis. That's assuming you can use custom emulator config files on there. But I don't think you can since the purpose of this machine is to be as plug-and-play as possible. That's why it's set up with WHDLoad games and not ADF disk images.

    This type of machine is what I wanted for years now. A dedicated non Windows/MacOS/Linux system which I run and then load an emulator. I wanted to boot into the retro system. Admittedly I was hoping first for the Atari ST line, but as also a former owner of Amiga, I am fine with this one too. I do hope though that after good sales of this system we will eventually get a similar Atari ST mini too.
    I had a few questions, you answered most of them through the video, but I do have a few more remaining. If you don't mind.
    Does/Will the system support any USB mouse too other than joystick? For joystick I plan on connecting arcade/fight sticks, and for mouse I rather use my own modern mouse to which I am now well used to. You mentioned it should support any USB joystick and the promotional material mentions any USB keyboard, but nothing about mouse.
    Hmm, I wonder though how one would access the menu etc buttons of the gamepad on a third party device. Perhaps combination with keyboard press on a USB keyboard.
    How are hard drives emulated with this? Also can you actually save from within the game and not just the save state? I know the prototype you have there doesn't support usb sticks. I wonder how the final product will deal with this. I mean, ok I can load my own games on the stick, but what if I want to "install" them on a "hard drive"? Or say save/load games or whatever else from the virtual floppies and hard drive, than the save states of the emulator.
    Also can you use the save states for the games from a stick or only those already built in?
    Games that support both the A500 and A1200, can you pick which "version" to run?
    Mind you these are open questions, or thinking out loud if you prefer. :)
    Not knowing how great the final product will be (already pre-ordered it but has been pushed by Amazon back to mid April), I am hoping they will release a USB Quickshot II joystick too. Also the already mentioned ST mini.
    ANYWAY, thanks for the video man!

    I regret giving away / selling all my old computers and consoles as well. I do have a Mini SNES these days, and I have been a bit naughty and hacked it to put more games and emulators on it, one of them being the Megadrive versions of Speedball 2 and Worms. Loved the presentation of the video and seeing your gorgeous doggies brought a smile to my face. Subscribed!

    Does it work with the Retronic Design DB9 to USB adapter so you can use the original Amiga joysticks or the CD32 controller? I know for a fact that it works with the C64 Mini.
