- Welcome back to Next-Gen Console Watch. This week Daemon is joined by Unlocked's Ryan McCaffrey, and IGN's Community Lead, Jada Griffin to discuss Square Enix's sales woes. The company admits that the storied Final Fantasy franchise has not been selling well as of late, with the latest two entries not meeting expectations. As a result, Square Enix will be undergoing a restructuring of sorts, and many are pointing to their exclusivity deal with Sony as a cause. But is that fair? Maybe gamers just don't care about Final Fantasy as much as they used to? And how much can Xbox benefit if Square Enix decides to let all their franchises go multiplatform? Plus we have poll results and a new poll to vote on at IGN.com.

The split for the Square Enix game would still be 90-10 or 80-20 in favour of Playstation to the Xbox just like how XV did. Not much of a gain tbh.
And that’s still more sales and $$$ for them, throw in pc and whatever Nintendo calls their next system and sales increase even further

Why have they even been releasing only on PlayStation anyway when they’ve released games on both like Final Fantasy 15 and Hitman? Why are they only doing that for some? Is that their decision or a deal they’ve signed themselves into?

A Final Fantasy 7 bundle isn't very unique. We've seen the Mass Effect Trilogy go to Sony after Xbox exclusivity.

They would never do the deal without doing the math beforehand. But Square is notoriously bad in measuring interest in their games. They can’t read the market properly these days. They lost tomb raider and hitman because of crap like that.

You know, you can have a conversation about the two brands as competitors, but you can also do it in a civil way.
Exclusivity is shitty to begin with. Notice how games have lower sales on another platform when the same game is released on some platform years later(For example, FF7 Remake could have gotten more sales if it wasn't exclusive on PlayStation at launch)
Platforms need to have exclusives. Why have so many console companies when they all give you the same games? PlayStation, Nintendo need to keep their exclusives. It may hurt game sales, but still that's what makes you buy a PlayStation or a Nintendo console.

It's not just that. Game development in general has increased massively in cost and time since then. AAA game studios have decreased in the amount while taking much much longer to release a single title. This is the main reason behind the current drought of AAA games.

About that poll at the end. If the Switch 2 has a 4K docked resolution it wouldn't be rendering games like that. GUI menus and video apps would be what that feature would be for. Nintendo not providing backwards compatibility would be a gut punch to players, so yeah it needs that. Hall Effect sticks on the new joy-con would solve stick drift.
Is none one mentioning how Nintendo is nothing but exclusives but somehow doing its thing w/o issue? Granted, it's an outlier in a lot of ways but its managed to do some pretty impressive things with underpowered hardware not pushing cutting edge graphics but still managing to make some form of financial dent.

Both platforms have games that show off the performance in console.
Many games on Xbox you can already get on Playstation and only Playstation has exclusives and for Xbox exclusives they are not real exclusives because those can also be played on PC

With this being said I’m positive the FF7 Remake series will remain a PS5 console exclusive. After Part 3 is when they will begin to branch out more. They still have a contract to uphold.
If exclusivity disappears, then owning a console will depend entirely on value and the size of the library of that console.
The killer app will always be the best reason to buy hardware. Yet software is still not the pinnacle of focus for hardware makers…🤷🏻♂️

Simply making Chrono Trigger sequels and similar games would have saved Square Enix long ago. They've refused since Chrono Cross, which had very little to do with Chrono Trigger.
A proper Chrono Trigger sequel or full remake would’ve made them soooo much money. It’s ridiculous that they haven’t yet.

Third-party exclusivity deals only serve to hurt the market and gamers themselves. When you buy a console to just play a single game then there's no competition, you don't choose the better piece of hardware, or the one that suits your needs best, or even the one with the best studios.
