- Welcome back to Next-Gen Console Watch. This week Daemon is joined by Ryan McCaffrey of the Unlocked podcast, and Max Scoville from Beyond. The topic: are video game publishers better off making adaptations of their games, rather than making new games? Fallout and The Last of Us are two examples of a TV adaptation of a video game done right, and Sony is leaning hard into their IP for more TV series. Is it more financially viable for an IP holder to license their properties for a prestige TV show, over making a new entry in the video game franchise? And would fans prefer that, as long as the shows are good?

I’m glad games figured it out. Tv Series are WAYYYYY BETTER than movies for video games. Tv series allow it to be more detailed and tell more of the story the movies never did games true justice.

Oh wait you can’t. The walking dead was a show before it turned into a movie. The only game that really did this was King Kong. Game developers can’t keep up. Helldivers 2 is still up there 👀 been some months for what a 200 person company ?
Depends on the studio. Super Mario had a movie and Halo had a tv show and people like Super Mario more.

TV Show is an expensive gamble as well, main positive for the devs is that someone else takes up the bulk of the heavy lifting....
It also relies on TV show creators to faithfully adapt - otherwise you end up with something like Halo.
They saw what wonders it did for Cyberpunk & Witcher.

They didn't. Fallout TV series were planned before TLOU and Witcher series even existed, but it took years to find the right concept.

Halo really shot itself in the foot with it being an AU story. Imagine if we got something about some insurgents on a planet in the outer colonies just at the start of the covenant war. Where at the start, they're fighting the UNSC for their independence. And here comes a covenant ship that starts glassing the place and it becomes a fight for survival to escape off world. Evading the Kig-Yar scouts, taking out some Ungoyy, an extremely close encounter with some Sangheili that leads to tragic deaths. Maybe even a run in with some UNSC marine or Spartan that has them on edge at first but work together to overcome the alien threat. A whole original story that could canonically take place within the universe of the games, books and comics.
Sorry Ryan, but the halo tv show is not fine.

We're still getting a new fallout game, but its many years away since their working on ES first.
Ahh yore, those were the days. It’s also probably frustrating for writers who have unique stories they’d love to get in front of people’s eyes when they’re up against shows based on game properties let alone recycled known IPs
The same holds true in Japan when they make anime about a manga, novel, or game.

Because eventually there will be a limit of how many customers you can sell too until you are forced to make another product.

Portal would work, but games like Skyrim wouldn't be done justice without several hours of screentime

You can make a show or a movie about a game series. Just don’t expect the long term fans of that game to enjoy whatever gets pushed out. Fallout is a diamond in the rough for recent adaptions.
So when the hell are we getting that Half Life Alyx port on the PSVR2?

A canonical Gears of war TV series, maybe about a team of onix guards on azura or something like that, and done well as fallout

The TV show gets viewers curious about the game. The Game is the hook. New game would be the big money maker as most of the people who play the games recently either bought it at a huge discount or have owned it since 2015.
So a new game would sell to the new and old fans together for a bigger first month profit.
Again, if both PlayStation and Microsoft dont show some actul bangers in the upcoming months, it's going to the worst for games.
We def need more games this generation. My series x is a dust collector and I’ve played more bloodborne and dark souls replays on ps5 than much else. Not counting the few exclusives we have gotten. It’s got more use than my xbox for sure. Baldurs Gate 3 has been the only game that really had me putting loads of time into it.
As a 21 year old it's strange thing to say but...i was raised on the OG trio, seeing a mix between new and old in the show was pretty good..i just hope season 2 shows the varying factions from NV like the boomers and khans.

Streamers have had their traffic spike significantly, walk through channels and first playthroughs are popping up everywhere, even veteran fallout streamers are reinvigorating their tips and tricks videos, everyone seems to be benefiting. ❤
Hope that games will focus more on gameplay and avoid to be movies like, fallout is not cinematic and that helped the show a lot in bringing something that the game couldn't do, and that's fine because games are not supposed to do what movies do.

Easy because a game can sell more and the TV series has a really big history no matter what it is it will do to fail but the Mario movie ended up providing that they have potential but after that they went back to sucking
