- Welcome back to Next-Gen Console Watch. This week Daemon is joined by IGN's Xbox podcast host, Ryan McCaffrey, and Podcast Beyond's Max Scoville to talk Nintendo Switch 2 rumors. Leaks from manufacturers have provided more details on what updates Nintendo's Switch 2 could have over the original. The leaks suggest magnetic joy-con, longer battery life, a larger and higher-resolution screen, and 4K output in docked mode. Plus, we go over last week's poll, and have a new poll for you to vote on at IGN.com.

Backward compatibility with PHYSICAL carts is what’s most important to me.
Mostly likely not but maybe with dlc
Why is it so important , it’s not like the original switch will stop working when switch 2 is released
@@mr-gamer-1411 better performance!
@@mr-gamer-1411PS5 and XS have retrocompatibility , that enhances the performance of the exclusives and other third party games. If you have to buy a remaster for the next console instead of upgrading the game you already have, then it's no worth It.
Nintendo has always had a history of physical backwards compatibility in its consoles even placing ports for previous hardware controllers e.g: the Wii for Gamecube controllers. Like the Gameboy Advance you could stick in original Gameboy cartridges and then it played
All we want is a powerful switch with modern technology we dont want a new invention. Everyone loves the original switch we just want it to be more powerful.
Agreed. So all the new releases don't have to either downgrade the graphics, or wait longer times for the switch release

Making the the Switch 2 backwards complatable is a great way to combat piracy. This would allow them to still get revenue from their OG Switch titles, creating a smooth transition to the next generation console.
Backward compatibility should always be the first thing when building a new console
You mean....like Switch was? 😬😬😬😬🤭🤭🤭🤭
No one uses backwards compatibility

Who cares about magnetic joycons. Fix the joycon drift is all they had to do.
Won't happen they made millions selling defective joy cons
Other reports state that they have
Fixing the Joycon drift is easy, they just need to use Hall effect sensors.
What is this man Ryan on about? Nintendo has been champions of backwards compatibility for a while. GB>>GBC>>GBA>>DS>>3DS each were backwards compatible with the previous hardware. Consoles have a much worse history with Gamecube, Wii, and Wii U being the outliers. This notion of selling the same games to you "over and over" seems to be more of an issue with virtual console games which won't be an issue as I'm sure NSO's game library will transfer over to Switch 2.
Basically this is XXL switch, got it.
But with new architecture, new customised SOC, new technologies likes DLSS etc
Nintendo has always been great with backwards compatibility. The Wii could play Gamecube games, the Wii U could play Wii games and Nintendo DS, could play ALL the previous gameboy games.
And yet I’ll never have the joy of playing Windwaker. Sigh.
Ds could not play gameboy games
@@CursedCommentariesYeah, he probably meant the DS could play gameboy advance game
If it's backwards compatible day 1 for me if it isn't might pick 1 up a few years after release or not bother.
I'm in the same boat.
For me, it would depend on the new titles.
Its just basically an upgraded switch so yes it will be "backwards compatible" if you should even call it that when all it is, is an upgraded switch. Better joycons, better resolution, more power. Nothing warrants it not being able to play switch games. Its still crap since it can't play my gamecube, wii, and all past console games because that would make it a real backwards compatible device. Nintendo will never do that. Most you get is just "you can still play switch games on this better switch".
What's Ryan talking about? Nintendo was the only console doing backward compatibility for a long time. Gameboy Advance was backwards compatible with Gameboy games. DS was backwards compatible with GBA games. 3DS was backwards compatible with DS games. Wii was backwards compatible with Gamecube games. Wii U was backwards compatible with Wii games...has he forgotten that? Lol Ryan being a Microsoft fanboy thinking Xbox were pioneers in it😅😅😅
To be fair, Microsoft is the only ones with backwards compatibility all the way and everything will work on next console too.
He was likely referring to Nintendo's practice of their non-portable systems not being backwards compatible with each other. The Wii was the first Nintendo home console to be backwards compatible with games from the previous system, followed by the Wii U. On the portable side of things, they did things different. GB->GBC->GBA->DS->3DS, each was compatible with the system before it, and in the GBA's case, two systems before it.
Backwards compatibility doesn't count if you only do it with the previous console.
XBOX does it with games from ALL previous consoles. PS3 was compatible with PSONE and PS2 games back in the day and with PS4 it all went bleh... and PSN now has roms abailable to buy, but you can't even use your own old discs so it doesn'0t fully count as well...
If you're working on backwards compatibilty, you must do it right, with all your previous consoles in mind, or maybe just getting a PC and emulating games, because that works flawlessly and it's the only way to preserve and play nice the Nintendo games.
@@DJordydj Microsoft doesn't do it with all games though, in fact it's pretty limited. And yes, backwards compatibility does count if you only do it with the previous console, that's exactly what it means.
A lot of it is circumstantial based on the hardware diversification and remaster potential with Nintendo prioritising unique gameplay experiences. That being said, they are a business and entitled to monetise their content as they see fit. No one's got a gun to our heads to sell our old devices. Plus, they did pave the way as has been mentioned.

How about let's just focus on 1080p in a hand held before we waste battery on 4k nonsense. The switch is often 540p and many games run like crap even at that low res. 4k on a tiny screen is just wasting resources. Focus on 1080p handheld, 1440p / upscaled 4k on TV output.

Important to note that Nintendo have been offering backwards compatibility for a while now. GBA could play GB. Wii could play Gamecube. Wii U could play Wii. 3DS could play DS etc
Doesn't really mean a damn thing when they can only go back one generation...wow just one gen of backwards compatibility. The newer switch will only play switch games as it compatibility meaning so little...can't play any past gen titles then its nothing of interest as it should be playing switch games by default as this will just be a more powerful switch that's all.
Switch could play...?
@@Fate862 The Switch also marks the start of Nintendo officially investing in users' online accounts, as per their repeated business plan and investment in NSO. Backwards compatibility now favors the idea that they value a long lasting library. For old games on Switch, we've seen them drip-fed into NSO or as full-on remasters/remakes with a lot left to bring over.
Why isn't there a Nintendo splash screen at the beginning?
I’ve spent $1000 plus on games and accessories on the switch so I’d hope the next gen is backwards compatible
“Are we excited” lmao sums it up
It would cool if they put an external graphics card in the dock so we can really push the performance and quality when playing on the tv
Cannot wait. Aesthetics wise also switch still looks sleek at the end of its life. Hope the form factor is just as nice looking.

Maybe the new joycons have Hall effect sticks; which use magnets, and somewhere down the line that got confused as electromagnetic attachment somehow. 🤷🏽♂️
Because Hall effect sticks would solve the drift issue
not only an 8 in screen there should be an oled option as well. hopefully
Who's making the APU? AMD? Or are the doing another arm/nvidia custom job? Or will it be Snapdragon based (lol)?
arm/nvidia for sure
If the battery is better and backwards compatibility is the only upgrade then that alone is a success
Backwards compatibility is not optional, and the joycons need to be better quality. The magnet attachment would be nice to prevent damage on the rails.
Ture. Looking forward to swith 2. Hoping the joy con Don't drift.
drift will never be completely gone. but there can be improvements
After seeing the entire gaming industry go out of their way to imitate the versatility of the switch, it would be very foolish to piss in that cereal.
1080p oled handheld mode with faster load times and less laggy with backwards compatible digital and physical is all we need lol
The Switch 2 will not be as powerful as we think...
It's going to use DLSS to look better but run slower.
At least we can expect decent updates for Switch 1 games.
Imagine Zelda at 60 fps!
@@parazels83 Its funny because the current switch can play zelda totk in 60 fps. Lol
what would be required of the hardware and Dock to output in 4k to TV tho? that seems like a stretch

Yeah...no one from NVC is here. Weird. Lol
@8:47 Honestly the only thing that matters if they’re just upgrading the Switch.
Nobody is talking about how IF the joycon don't clic* like they do when you snap them on... The new magnetic system needs to make a similar snap if they REALLY wanna be congruent still calling it a SWITCH.
In my workplace we have electromagnetic devices, and they turn on by simply turning a dial. You could do it with a click or snap with the Joycons if you just have to pass a trigger or button to attach them, said button turning on the magnet.
@@szeltovivarsydroxan9944 that would be so sick! little details like that elevate the tangibility of the switch and separate it from regular similar consoles

Hopefully there's no issue having magnets near the screen
How often do you have magnets near any screen of any device you already own on a normal basis?
BUT WILL IT BE A BIGGER OLED SCREEN?
here comes the jinx:
it's gonna be digital-only.
what if there was a digital only home console only version that had a 1tb sata ssd?
Will the electro magnetic hold and lock tho?
i’m guessing it will be interlocking, like a puzzle but with the magnets it should hold and be sturdy until you intentionally remove it.
You don’t have a Nintendo exclusive podcast?
That extra inch goes such a long way.... -_-
hey this guy was part of the sonic hate discussion in 2016
I’m kinda wanting 1080p and a larger screen more than anything that would be so cool to travel with since I’m never at home to play the PlayStation

Nintendo only pushes 1080 upscaled is just fine. That means processing power doesn't need to be monstrous.
A whole extra inch is crazy

why not have someone from NVC on
it would just be nice if it is backward compatible, that it would mean that it can use the switch 1 carts, and not just backwards compatibility is just for digital only games.
They need to work out a way to get the dock to properly boost the spec independantly from the handheld, which should be left relatively low power for battery life and the small screen. Even if they charge seperately for a spec boosting dock, that's fine. Must be a way. The previous dock was mainly just useless lump of plastic that a cheap adapter could better.
nvidia dlss being exclusive for the swithc 2 is a make it or break it feature.
When IGN comments about this stuff it’s gets SPICY
Honestly switch has become my favourite console of all time / renewed my love for Nintendo.
It would take a lot for me not to get Switch 2 day 1. I'm all in - super looking forward to it lol
Mine too. How smooth it goes from handheld to dock and one to two players. Everything is so smooth and well thought.
Super Nintendo Switch does make a lot of sense.
With my reading glasses these days I’m going to assume diminishing returns on a handheld screen with 4k resolution
They have no idea what the NSW will be like or when it will be on sale. Those video titles are great for wasting time and generating business.
It would be really cool if the Switch 2 is backwards compatible, to let the old Switch games finally shine, and getting resolution upscaling and framerate boosts. That would be a dream. Also, those analog sticks need to be redone from the ground. Make the Joycons thicker/deeper, with actual analog sticks like you'd have on a PlayStation or Xbox controller, and obviously without drift issues.
If they use electromagnetic suction strong enough to hold the joy-cons on, would it be safe for people with pacemakers? 🤔
There's leaks and info? Damn.
If the next Switch isn't backwards compatible, it's going to be a children's toy and the world will move on to Steam Deck. If Nintendo really want to be competitive and appeal to gamers, it should be backwards compatible with every previous Nintendo console, the GameBoy, GameBoy Advance, 3DS, GameCube etc. Then it would be a lot more interesting.
Electro-magnetic? It sounds like it will not have a long battery life.
It’s gonna be called “Switch XL”
Please Nintendo call the next system Super Nintendo Switch
Nintendo consoles have a mixed record on backwards compatibility. Like they've often had some kind of device to bring previous gens into current gen.
But their handheld devices have always fully supported the previous gen.
With the switch specifically, how much are they going to change the shape of their carts?
All we want to customize home screen😅
Only got into fallout because bundled with Skyrim for special edition.
Dang these guys has been with ign for the longest. Sheesh.
If every game will have stable 30/60 fps then it would be enough improvement for me.
1. 8 inch screen or slightly larger is most important for me, the Lenovo Legion Go is 8.8 inches, so call that 9 inches... AAA console games, especially full 3D games, are designed so like in real life, you can see tiny things in the distance and sometimes interact with them too, like with a sniper rifle. This is fine on a 42 inch living room TV, taking things down to 8 inches is the bare minimum for comfort.
2. Consoles need a full sized directional pad exactly like the dpad found on the Wii U, the GameCube dpad was too small, the Switch dpad is non-existent, never make these mistakes again. There are more games in existence that use dpad input than thumbsticks for now, this includes 99% of fighting games like Soul Calibur, Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, and 2D platforming and puzzle type games like Mario, Rayman and Tetris.
3. Unobtrusive paddles / buttons on the back of the controllers or the device...exactly like the Steam Deck, for more input options. (These types of buttons work great for modifying what other buttons do while they are being held too, giving a huge range of input options!) People have lacked ideas on how to increase the freedom of input since the PS2 days, it is time to make rear buttons standard, let people be able to turn them off or on since everyone's hands are different, and place them ergonomically so they aren't in the way while gaming normally, nor too easy to press.
4. Normal face buttons, please. No more differently sized A, and B buttons, no more tiny C buttons, no more bean shaped X and Y buttons, and no more remotes, please. If anything, 6 face buttons like a Hori Fighting Commander gamepad would be amazing, or at the very least, offering a right joycon with those features.
That's all normal people who play all types of games really want. Hall sensor thumbsticks are cool, yes, but don't stick those on to some piece of garbage that lacks the above improvements.
We definitely need more mature rated games since the switch 2 will be more powerful
Backwards compatibility is a must

Every Nintendo console with the exception of the SNES had some gimmick that competing system didn’t have. N64 had 4 controller ports, GameCube literally had the ability to be carried around, Wii offered motion controls, Wii U had tablet integration, Switch could be handheld and stationary. I’m excited to see how the next Nintendo console innovates itself, if the next console is just a more powerful Switch I’ll be a little disappointed
