wait a sec, I don’t get one thing. if little ghost was able to go up there, how did it go pass through the door? in the end of the cut scene we clearly hear that the door is closing and then the ghost is falling down
@@alisakibin in the actual lore of the game, little ghost does not escape the abyss by going through that door. Nosk, for some reason we are not sure of, builds a tunnel from the abyss to deepnest, allowing a few of the vessels to escape, including little ghost. the tunnel later closed up and there is nearly no trace of it being there
@@gdlifesteal5824 wait wait... Nosk built a tunnel? How can we be sure? was it a shadow same as the Knight or started from the other side?

Hello father/mother
Imagine being little ghost and do all of that just for see that your father has already chosen someone else to be the hollow knight and be thrown back to the abyss
That doesn't sound right, as the hollow knight's already fully grown, while the knight is still small from that memory to the time this game takes place.
The birthplace sequence is confirmed a memory, and time just doesn't work in Hallownest.

That's why the end of the escape scene is so important-the chosen Hollow Knight looks back when Wyrm can't see, showing it has a small fragment of compassion. That's why the kingdom is falling under the control of the infection when you show up-the Hollow Knight actually isn't a completely pure vessel.
I can see why Hollow Knight was chosen as the pure vessel, dude's a speedrunning god o.o
thats our character, the knight, NOT the hollow knight
You all can't read or something... He said that the "Hollow Knight was chosen as the pure vessel" he was talking about the "Hollow Knight" not the "Ghost".
The Ghost wasn't chosen as a pure vessel, Hollow Knight was chosen as a pure vessel, hence the Hollow Knight is Parkour god, hence he is the Pure Vessel.
@@Tsukinotaku what youre saying makes no sense since the one in the video is the knight/little ghost, and little ghost is the one doing the speedrunning, *not* the hollow knight.

Actually he did make sense.
Even though the player is the “little ghost” and he did make it all the way to the top, The Pure Vessel did it way faster, and first.
Thats why he was chosen.
You got it mixed up.
“Hollow Knight” is the Pure Vessel.
@@Alex-wl6oh ohhhh wait they meant the fact that the hollow knight is already at the top, i get it now
I’d like to think the Abyss memory isn’t an exact representation of how it actually went down. I think the Pale King part of it is accurate, but the fact that the Knight goes through it with its new abilities is because they’ve developed as a vessel and their current self shows up in this altered memory, not them before the events of the game
And for an easier answer, simple fair game design
When I first played it, and after some videos and theories and stuff, I honestly just believed that the Knight could always do that, but, due to them leaving Hallownest (since they came back from the Howling Cliffs), they forgot everything about it (Like Quirrel). The spells? Like using chakra or mana in an anime or whatever, or like in Pokemon where they can forget moves, it requires you to know a certain something to be able to do it. Dash? The Knight is already wearing a cloak so I thought it wore down. I always thought that the Monarch Wings was less of an item and more of an ability, too. I've never actually thought about the other items too fondly so I can't and probably won't try to argue that this might be wrong but I just made up this in my head since I've never seen anyone talk about it before.
Judging by the number of dead vessels it probably looked more like World War Z
@@ataino I mean... every other time you've ever used the dream nail, you've entered the dream as the current version of the Knight. There's no reason for this to be any different just because it's your own dream.
@@android19willpwn that also makes sense, just that usually you enter other peoples' dreams and they're there, but here, there's only knight, which led me to make all of that theorising lol
Maybe it's like how Sekiro does memories, it literally doesn't happen for the person until they go back into the past and do it.
Well, the abyss is who knows how old, so maybe platforms crumbled away over time. The flashback is just the abyss as the knight remembers it.
this is a good interpretation
Well the platforms are floating somehow
Tbh this is why I theorize that the Path of Pain was entirely a dream realm thing made by the Pale King to hide his greatest failure (the memory when he realized he loved his child, and thus 'corrupted' them) rather than a way of choosing the Pure Vessel; the climb to the top of the Abyss was almost completely impossible, and could only be done by a vessel that had no will to break, a vessel that was not only emotionless enough to do whatever it needed to get to the top, but also was strong enough to grow into a knight to fight/contain the Radiance. Since it's implied that the vessels hatched on the floor of the Abyss with all the eggshells, it would have been much more convenient to simply call them up through the obstacle course of hell and filter out the 'impure' ones than to take them all into the Palace and run them through a physical version of the Path of Pain (which would have been a huge waste of time to build, assuming there's a time crunch with the infection and that the Abyss escape is natural). That also would have allowed him to remain distant and relatively uncaring about what he had to do, because all he had to do to properly test them was to call them up and wait for one that was empty enough to bludgeon their way to the top (perhaps even using other siblings to climb).
The problem with this, of course, is that the vessels would have had to do a fair bit of problem-solving to escape (assuming they were asked to make the climb relatively soon after hatching), implying the presence of mind, but as we all know, the Pale King's perceptions of things is...a little flawed, to say the least, and he was likely desperate enough to attribute this problem-solving as more of a computer trying to find the easiest route of escape to complete its task rather than a thinking being problem-solving its way out of his obstacle course of death. It's not like he had another option, anyways...at least, as far as we know. Frankly, I think him just sauntering up to the Radiance to fight her would have been a lot less complicated than this whole Abyss disaster, but we know jack shit about his limitations so the dead baby pit was most likely his best and only option
My headcanon is that we're playing IN the memory not literally reliving the memory of escaping the abyss so that's why we still have all out stuff
So either the Hollow Knight and the Ghost are super badasses, or the ghost found a small hole that leads to freedom.. I wonder... Nice vid by the way, thanks for your suffering
maybe thats how the others escaped too. but the knight did make it up
My theory is that there's a gateway to the abyss from deepnest, in the Sharp Shadow room. That's how Hornet found the abyss and why Nosk has so many vessel corpses.
@@Tyxaar uhh yeah, maybe. Possibly even an intended passage between ancient "void worshipers" and ancient weavers, you know?
@@Tyxaar I mean, that's probably what happened. we know void can pass through void, and, since the vessels were born is the abyss, most likely they were drenched in void and temporarily obtained the shade cloak or something like that, and, we also know void can be solid because of the black stones and void given form. So, they probably shade cloaked up there.

The real question is how many other vessels did the Knight run into on the way up? How many did it see tumble from the tippity top of the abyss only to goof the last few jumps? What's to stop them from not fighting/helping each other? Does Gorb actually like dairy products? And how do we know the vessels couldn't find a way to wall-climb indefinitely since they technically have no concept of pain/endurance?
IF YOU'RE DOING MORE LORE, I BEG OF YOU: I NEED MORE ANSWERS! (excellent video, as always)
Gorb loves Dairy Products
Helping or fighting each other shows emotions, therefore, they are faulty
Hanki, ;) wanting to get up, proves faultiness, the pure vessel prolly just didn’t even move and got killed
@@HankJ666 I think they would pogo on each other, seeing his brothers as just platforms
A P, that is both incredibly terrible and the most plausible answer.
Even besides the Abyss, how *tf* did the knight make it to the top of the howling cliffs??
Maybe there’s a little tunnel that leads straight from the abyss to the top. . .
Also CC, if you somehow see this, I love your content and I watched every second of your video talking about cloaks, it was fantastic, +1 sub ;)
That would make the most sense, considering the memory ends with the door closing and the Knight falling back down. Some alternative exit is the only answer.
But that aside, it doesn't change that he had to make his way all the way up there anyways in order to have that memory in the first place
@LadyKatana YT I'm glad you enjoyed the video :D
The lore of Hollow Knight is incosistent in several instances
1) How did the PK put Radiance inside PV, if it exists in minds of bugs in the first place
2) How did vessels escape the Abyss
3) Why does WL simultaneously say that the Knight is a perfect vessel ('you are free of such blemishes' and several other quotes) and then proceeds to imply that we have freedom of choice (she says to asssist the Troupe, 'if we chose so') and curiocity ('if it's curiocity wishes it' or smt).
And maybe some others
Greenpath. The fork in the road is even before mothwing cloak. The elder baldur was still a hatchling, or the knight damage-boosted through, there's no need for mantis claw and there's plenty of mobs to pogo off through all the dash-jumps.
Well if you or the hollow knight resourceful enough you could make a makeshift mantis claw with some of the sharper and harder to break horns of the vessels

In my headcanon when the player's not controlling Little Ghost (aka playing Hollow Knight), they're an absolute god in terms of platforming and combat, so they maybe they were able to do all of that in less than 5 hits (or even with no hit at all)
@Arnold Gila no I mean the Knight is just capable of doing that but the Hollow Knight is better or just got lucky that time
@Arnold Gila well, HK did have a head start from knight. he can be an absolute beast, but HK was climbing up before him.
I think it may not be an oversight that the knight has all its abilities in the birthplace memory. Anytime the knight enters a dream it has all its abilities, therefore it could be safe to say that it has all its abilities when traveling in its own? Then to justify it climbing out of the abyss the first time, there's a very high chance that by the time you get to the abyss in-game, it's likely been weathered down or something after being sealed off for probably months.
Seeing as you need the dream nail to get to this point it makes sense
The Knight was just going into his own dream. Maybe he dreams of himself with beautiful wings.
awwwwww. :)
...on second thought, though, that would definitely make him impure
*themself
the knight is genderless
The Knight having the stuff in the memory makes sense. The Knight used the Dream Nail to go into the memory, right? Every time it does that to someone else, it enters the dream as is, the same is happening here, the current Knight physically takes the place of the Knight who played out the memory in the Abyss, that's most likely why we can even control the Knight for most of it... Of course that still doesn't explain how it got out the first time if it didn't have a nail, and especially if we are supposed to take there were no Shadow Creepers. Also I think it's impossible to make the last jump from the Birthplace cutscene, since a few are rearranged? I'm pretty sure the gap between the last two is too big.
Also for Ccamci, I actually had a lot of stuff to respond to you about that White Lady comment threat, but I've both been too lazy and forgotten about it constantly... I mean, it'll probably happen eventually, but ehhh *shrugs*

Aight this is my idea. You know how leaving Hallownest takes away the intellect and memory of the bugs as we know from Quirrel and the tablets, so I think that the Knight already had some abilities when born, in this case monarch wings and cloak. After leaving Hallownest he lost his memory and thus his abilities. When acquiring items like the cloak or wings he is just grabbing some relics that trigger the return of his memories, maybe something similar to Quirrel with Monomon.

I think the knight had all the abilities when exiting the abyss or was able to do those things (probably the ladder) but the knight completely forgot how to wall jump etc. when leaving hallownest and the knight needs the collectible items to help it with traveling.
Just Speculation
Cool theory, i was thinking that shit of losing memories outside hallownest
The problem is that Mothwing Cloak, Mantic Claw, Crystal Heart and Monarch Wings are not just abilities. They are physical objects that you obtain. Even if you forgot how to use it, you would still have access to it. Similar to how Quirrel has the Mask throughout his journey out side of Hollownest.
@@akishorekumarr he said that the knight knew how to do the abilities but then when it left hallownest it lost it's memory so it needed the objects to remember, not that it had the objects before
@@remus6909 My point is that if the Knight didn't have the objects before, then it couldn't have those abilities. If it did have the objects before, it should still have them at the start of the game. From this, I can only assume that the Knight did not have the abilities when climbing out of the Abyss.

The intro of you explaining that it was an "inconsistency" that the knight in his memory, has already got a dash and the wings.. Well i think otherwise when you said it was an "inconsistency." I think what you were playing when the Knight was getting out of the abyss was the present knight. The game was showing you, the present knight, reliving it's past memories. The knight was walking through his memories (literally) to remember it. And when he got to the ledge, he finally remembered his past of holding to the ledge and falling.
remember that they were not alone in the abyss... the siblings probably helped each other climb up (some probably sacrificed themselves).
True. Considering that they were not pure vessels that had no feelings.
But... Since the little ghost had no feelings... Maybe he used the other vessels as a sacrifice. Just a theory
i think the knight lost his dash and wings, given that we find the items close to siblings' corpses.
Interesting
I mean, the knight isn't the only vessel to have escaped, so there's probably another way out that's not in the game. We only see the game in 2d, but we know there is more behind what we see because, you know, background art

You're asking the real questions and I love the fact that knight was proven to be a parkour god.
I feel like you have the dash to begin with. The broken vessel had it and you get the mothwing cloak from another vessel. The knight could've lost the cloak after escaping the abyss
I always thought that was weird, lol, now we can see how he escaped
I love this, and all the work you put into it! (since it shown that the knight *could have* gotten out. Maybe.) I always justified it by saying the knight started with their wings, but they were destroyed when they escaped the Abyss, and only regained them later, but it was kind of flimsy, on my part.
2:42
Getting over it with The Pale King
Bro, when I heard that SummoningSalt music kicking in, I knew I was in for a treat!
I think maybe the knight was the most trained vessel so the pale king gave him all the abilities. He got thrown into the abyss, got out. Left Hallownest lost his memory and lost the abilities
It makes sense for all the void spells because of the description of the voidheart , it basically seems like it says the void in him was long forgotten
And for the rest of the things you can get (except the crystal heart because why would he be given a mining tool?) maybe he had short term memory like a goldfish and kept dropping them. He probably only remembered a few things, like needing to save Hallownes and how to use his nail(but I think he had learned the nail arts so he forgot those)
I just think that this is what happened and that why he has these abilities in the abyss memory
But if the knight was one of the most trained vessels, the king would have paid attention to him more and should have known that he was void and could seal the radiance.
And, the vessels was born in the abyss. Who would even go there and train them?
Just found your channel today at 5:31 am. Subbed!
Maybe, you keep your items because they are gifts to test the possible Hollow Knight, one who knows to use the gifts of those his father rules. How do you get all these abilities? From other vessels? From the Mantis’? These things may have been given to all of the vessels.
I can't help but notice that you get the Mothwing Cloak *from* a Vessel in the main game, so it seems possible that the Knight had it and lost it somewhere in the wasteland outside of Hallownest? It seems weird that one random vessel corpse would have it and it wouldn't be something they all had naturally, doubly so since the Lost Kin also has a dash ability.
Wow this is amazing I always wonder if it is possible!
This is so high quality how did I not find you sooner
The HOME song at the opening hit like a freight train. Amazing video.
My theory on why the knight had those abilities is that they're all intrinsically within different knights, but bound to Hallownest. So, when the knight left the nest (for... whatever reason), they lost all their "pale" abilities.
I always thought that was more of a vision than a memory. A dream.
Nice summoning salt inspiration! I bet hed be happy
But maybe the vessels knew how to dash or double jump from the moment they were born. The Knight leaves the kingdom and we know that everybody leaving the kingdoms looses their memory. So it seams plausible that the knight just lost his abilities this way
Those things may be a part of vessels "basic" equipment that our knight lost while wandering outside the kingdom with no goal. Just remember that you get those from, well, other vessels. Both the cloak and wings. And that's it
lul, never tried the path of pain. Guess I'll try this path of pain. sometime

Oh boy oh boy I hope some people actually attempt this
A couple points:
If you assume a nail could be crafted, it stands to reason a claw could too.
The knight may have improvised basically every item, gotten out of the Abyss, gotten out of the kingdom, and lost/discarded the items outside the kingdom, having forgotten why it had them. Then just used what it found, as Quirrel suggested in the Temple of the Black Egg, once it came back and started exploring.
Great video!

Summoning salt vibes love the execution
Every vessel was given a nail when they were born, along with a mothwing cloak and monarch wings. The knight lost those items and broke their nail when they found their way into the kings pass. Thats why the vessel hornet killed had a mothwing cloak, and the broken vessel seems to use it for their dash attacks. No vessels are seen using monarch wings but they could have had them in their full forms and then broken vessel sort of broke/lost his.
Wow. I was wondering the same lol-
pretty impressive cc! How many times did the spike tunnel take you?
Why does the vessel have all the abilities that you acquire over the game in the abyss dream? Simple.
It’s a dream (not a perfect recreation of the past). The vessel’s memories are sealed/lost throughout the events of the game, thus it must descend into the depths of hallow nest and explore its varied landscapes and cultures in order to discover itself. This part of the game is simply the vessel dream nailing their own reflection (ie. entering into their own dreams and learning about a truth that they had up until that point forgotten). I wouldn’t call it an inconsistency in the game, it falls well within what could be expected and wouldn’t be inaccurate to the storytelling in any way.
I know I haven’t done a good job explaining this (and it does seem like I’m ranting a bit) but I just really love this game, and think that the story is told beautifully ;P
You get the mothwing cloak and monarch wings any time you enter anyone's dream. It makes sense that entering your own should be no different tbf
My head-canon is that different vessels have different abilities.
The Hollow Knight / Pure Vessel is able to teleport, summon pillars (blades or flames), throw its innards at you (orange blobs or void tendrils), do an AoE (blob spray or focus).
All of its abilites seem to be modified by the infection, replacing focus with orange juice.
Something similar might have happened to the broken vessel / lost kin. I wonder if modders could reimagine the broken vessel before it's infection. What abilities does the intact(?) vessel have?
The Knight's abilities used to get out of the abyss and Hallownest might have been erased in the howling cliffs, as it seems to erode the mind, like with Quirrel's memories. Both the Knight and Quirrel however retained their mental pull toward Hallownest.
The abyss might have been imperfectly sealed, allowing some vessels to escape. Those holes could have been patched up later. We see streams of void throughout Hallownest (impassible without shadecloak) which might be remnants of former openings.
The Pale King likely called the first vessel that made it up a pure vessel, probably because he was in desperate need of such a being and didn't have the time to examine each and every one of them, maybe not even knowing what he should check for. Who knows how long it took for OG THK to make it up there? How long has the Pale King stared into that abyss before getting the results he wished for? THK was tarnished by the love for the Pale King and didn't want to dissapoint him, so they hid their imperfection.
The Pale King was able to look some distance into the future. He foresaw that he would become king of Hallownest, saw he shed his wyrm body. He foresaw the infection so he created THK. He foresaw his misjudgement of THK and abandoned the kingdom.
The Pale King bit off a bit more that he could chew, overestimation his own judgement and abilities, and the vision of it all coming crashing down after sealing away the infection in THK in the black egg temple drove him into hiding inside a dream.
Given that Siblings are an enemy type in the abyss, what about using Shades to bypass the walljump or the spike tunnel?
I was so confused for a minute because of the summoning salt music XD

Just hearing the music at the very beginning of this video is already telling me its gonna be a good one.
