      Mater-Peer..
      Mother-Peer? Like peer to mother?
      Father?
      also could it be that the weavers (or the pale king) threw silk down, the void copied it and made it into a part of the vessels? Or that the Void makes more silk, given a template - or.. maybe the Void is able to make Hollow Vessels when given living substance - like an egg?

    • @OrionoftheStar
      @OrionoftheStar Před 3 lety +32

      Quick question--doesn't the appearance of Hornet's face on the Sealed Siblings ending imply that she knows how to make the Seal of Binding? While she was trapped in the Black Egg with the Knight, the masks that had appeared on the original version of the Black Egg were of the Dreamers--who weren't in the Egg, and who we know were capable of forming the Seal of Binding.
      Shouldn't that suggest, then, that Hornet does have that knowledge?
      (I also had the idea that the Seal of Binding in Hornet's room was her practicing making one, but there's no substance behind that idea)

    • @lakefish7743
      @lakefish7743 Před 3 lety +5

      Well she could have been working out how to make one, and the knowledge may have allowed the seal to appear.. but it might be that the Pale King put void into the Black Egg - enough to give it the order to re-seal any who take in the Radiance like the "Pure" Vessel had done, as a precautionary measure.. or did so because the seals can wear down. Void-made "Spider" perhaps?

    • @marzipancutter8144
      @marzipancutter8144 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@EaterOfGeese The shade dash, like all the spell upgrades, is just the knight integrating its own void nature into its abilities. It's not a different cloak. If I had to guess, I'd say what we see is what we get, the knight covers himself (including the cloak) in Void for the duration of the dash, but still uses the cloaks ability to dash.
      As for "how do you even use shade dash in steel soul", there's really no reason why it shouldn't work the same. Just because you can't canonically die to see it doesn't mean that the knight isn't still made of void, and as such, a shade under his shell.

      “Pale Prince” is usually used to describe a theoretical non-hollowed child of the Pale King and White Lady. The vessels are not actually Pale Beings due to most of their physical form having been destroyed and replaced by the Void. While it could be argued that replacing their original bodies with Void does not make them no longer Pale Beings, the living vessels do not give off any sort of light, which both the Pale King and White Lady do, and the Pale King himself mentions in the White Palace lore tablet that he has “no blazing kin,” which obviously means that Vessels lack what makes the Pale Beings so unique. I know this is a bit long to respond to something that was likely just a misconception, but I felt like the point needed some explanation. Also, Hornet isn’t a Pale Being because her mother is just a common bug, and that impurity makes her only 50% Pale Being, which apparently means that she has almost none of the traits of Pale Beings

Or what about the inconsistency that she supposedly uses soul to form her half of the Kingsoul charm, but supposedly the seal would stop her for focusing/growing, even though through this theory she can still use soul.
      I feel like this would be be the best answer, but too much missing information to solidify it as valid. The only way to prove this theory is if we can figure out:
      - How much soul the White Lade currently has
      - & how much soul (if any) is needed for her to grow in size.

      So, since the White Lady is a higher being, maybe she, too, has limitless amounts of SOUL? That would imply that... either her Focus ability isn't changing her size based on the amount of SOUL she has or uses, or that there's an additional seal on her to stop her from "growing" herself further than the growth we see just outside the egg.

    Hey Cc! I was wondering what your takes on the baldurs are? They're a weird enemy, only appearing near Greenpath and in the mounds, the baldur nest where you find the charm is also strange, it's a unique place never explained. Then there's the fact that all elder baldurs _never_ come back after they die, a property shared by only combat arena enemies and bosses. It's such a strange bit of the lore I find is so rarely acknowledged.
    The baldur nest has the corpses or shells of many dead elder baldurs, so what killed them? It couldn't be the infection, as all the baldurs we see so far are unharmed by it, and there's no goop anywhere in the nest, unlike other infected characters. It'd be really interesting to see a video on the baldurs, if you have the time.

    The cloaks could also be offshoots and length could be hard to control because of the fact that all the vessels have a tree as a mom, and her branches are very large and curly, which could be why cloaks and horns are so curved, pointed, or long. Some vessels like Broken Vessel have long and curly horns, whereas vessels like the Knight/Player Character have shorter and more stiff/straight horns, similar to the Pale King. Both parents could play a part in the horns and cloaks due to their physical forms. (This is just my theory)

    I have a theory about why the failed vessels died while climbing out of the Abyss--it has to do with however it was the Pale King was testing them.
    -The egg in the Abyss creates an effectively endless stream of vessels
    -The vessels are created with one purpose--leave the Abyss
    -The test is for them to accomplish a goal without developing any will, determination, emotion, or separate purpose of their own
    -As these are basic aspects of intellect, you get thousands to millions of failures before getting one (actually two) extreme abnormalities
    -Either the Pale King, as a higher being, is able to detect this and kill them when he notices from his position at the entrance, or he set up some spell to euthanize them if it happens
    -When he leaves with the Hollow Knight-to-be, he turns off the egg and doesn't kill anything else (or stops powering the spell, because his test is over).
    -The vessels that we know survived and got out somehow (and, considering that the Knight might have gotten some emotions of his own after being abandoned to fall back into the Abyss, possibly him too) are those that were created between the moment of the Knight's creation and the moment of the Void egg being turned off, but who hadn't been "alive" long enough for all of them to feel emotions and fail the test

    Speculation: I think you actually touched on the mystery of how the hollow knight grew to his size. It's the part of the white lady, and her ability to grow and to acquire more power.
    If the Wyrm's power was massive, but constant, even when he shrank to match the shells of the lesser beings, what if the white lady's ability is use her souls to grow, adding to its power. Could then it be possibly to use that power gained from his heritage for the hollow knight to grow in size.

    • @natakug1
      @natakug1 Před 3 lety +1

      on the same theory, the hollow knight's seal reacts to outside forces interacting with it, while the White Lady's seal reacts only to soul magic. Could this maybe be a key to her power? Maybe she draws IN souls similar to our main character draws in soul from striking enemies. and therefore the seal is to prevent herself from obtaining any further soul from her surroundings, thus binding her from growing and reaching further outside her "egg"

    One of the best lore videos I've ever seen. Very well thought out-and the Speculation tag (while a little too difficult to make out from the background sometimes) is genius of the highest being.
    I do have a couple of counterpoints/points:
    -Why does the White Lady's seal only activate with SOUL attacks? Well, what are higher beings? Look at the five we know of-the Pale King, Unn, Radiance, Root, and Grimm. Grimm's whole thing is being reborn to live forever. The Pale King reincarnated, presumably to live forever. Unn is old. Root is ancient and shows no signs of stopping. Radiance was physically destroyed, it seems, but her Essence lives on in memory as an Idea and a spirit.
    The Pale King is sometimes contrasted with "mortal bugs." So might the defining feature of Higher Beings be some sort of relation to immortality-if not literal, then in a spiritual sense of rebirth? (This would explain why the Pale King actually died, despite having died previously-he did not dance and die to live once more.)
    Either this or the Higher Beings have a connection to Dreams, which is equally possible.
    I don't think the SOUL side of your theory is quite on the money, but I cannot think of a better answer to the seal's problem.
    Keep it up!

      - I'm not exactly sure if I'm on the money either considering the Kingsoul half contradiction, though I think I at least got REALLY close (also Grimm isn't a higher being, he's a vessel for the Nightmare Heart; the Nightmare Heart is a higher being).

      oh boy this is goign to be long ..... you are quite close higher beings do have their own dream realms for radiance and nightmare heart its said that it was once united this probably can go for other realms too but they feel apart for unknown reasons?
      also im sure this said somewhere in game but higher beings are just called higher beings because they have immerse power abilities than normal bugs and pale king was only one to had rebirthing abilities because hes a wyrm and wyrms can shed their skin and thus he rebirthed to a mortal king to appeal for them more since mortals/moths couldnt see radiance they only saw her upper body as shining light or never saw her in general ( i know this is canon because not even godseeker can see her and puts her statue as just shining light and legs probably a bible referance as u phisycally cant see god), some are maybe immortal but i personally dont think so since radiance finnally got consumed by shadelord, pale king died for real since he died in his own realm and there are no signs of rebirth (i have a theory that he made a deal with void for a promise to destory radiance once and for all in exchange for his soul but thats not likely he most probably just got consumed), and grimm just dies with not completing the ritual and takes mightmare heart with him

    I agree with the vast majority of this video, and I really like the conclusion, even though I don't necessarily agree with it, I guess it's just sorta sitting idly in my head now? But I'll always take it into consideration. Buut I still feel compelled to point out soome stuff, and I guess I'll do it here, for anyone else passing by in the future, and because it is covering this specific theory, after all. (I also uh, don't really have a Twitter account to begin with.)
    I decided to go over stuff increasingly less important the further I go, so yeah, most important part is this: you're actually off on how many seals are activated by spells. The seals around the Dreamers are all activated by both physical hits and spells.The Hollow Knight's seal is only triggered by physical hits, though you can see snippets of it every few seconds even if you do nothing. One that's a bit odd is the faded seal over the egg containing the King's Brand, you can only see it once you get close enough, and it doesn't show up if you hit it with your nail or use spells on it. Now, the seals over the White Lady, the trilobite statue and the one in Grimm's tent are activated only by spells, as you said, but also the seal over the Black Egg's entrance and the one over the door to the Abyss. (Its existence also proves the Pale King can make those.)
    Soo, no, I don't think them blocking spells means they're blocking in access to soul, though _maybe_ the White Lady can have it do that anyway? Anyhow, since the entrance of the Black Egg and the door to the Abyss are not meant to be opened, I assume their seals act as both physical and magic protection (I mean, if they didn't couldn't the Knight just break through them?), and for whatever reason they don't show up when the Knight swings its nail in their general direction. It could be as to hide the fact that there's a seal to the player, and that in-game the Knight isn't actually trying to hit the thing, but spells are always less precise, I guess? It would make some sense for the White Lady, since the Knight doesn't hit NPCs, even if it can trigger the seal sorta indirectly.
    While I definitely do believe her wrappings are part of the whole binding process, and now that they grew naturally, through looks alone it's not impossible she had them from her silhouette in Godhome. I wasn't really able to tell where you think her eyes are, and I did think they were higher in the past, but this is roughly where I think makes most sense for them to be: prntscr.com/t1rqft Reason being that this greatly resembles her current look, just in silhouette form.
    So uh, I'm so inept at making my comments brief I'll have to separate them into multiple ones. Whoops. I'll take my chance now to say I really enjoyed this video, though.

    • @petruciosxd1374
      @petruciosxd1374 Před 3 lety +5

      I definitely agree that focusing soul isn't just used for healing, after all, one of the lore tablets in King's Pass says the reader can do it, and I believe it was William, who told mossbag that Ellina _could_ read the tablet next to the Abyss, she just couldn't decipher what it _meant,_ this makes it likely that indeed anyone who entered Hallownest may have been able to do it, even if the tablets are admittedly hyping up everything about the kingdom and the king, so ya know, worship him.
      It's possible this has to do with the Pale King's beacon granting higher thought to the bugs of Hallownest, so if you're an outsider who enters his beacon, you will gain the ability to focus, which is either possible due to being sentient, or perhaps the gained ability to focus is what grants you sentience, either way it works.
      Additionally, to make you think of him as even greater, he hypes up your abilities, calling you a higher being, saying you possess great strength, and that by focusing soul you "shall achieve feats of which others can only dream", which is in line with the idea that focusing grants one higher though, although it should be necessary to have at least enough intelligence to actually read the tablet; anyhow, since it's him who granted you this amazing super special ability, he therefore seems even more god-like in comparison.
      About the Soul Sanctum scholars, while them mentioning a pure focus does mean they know focusing is a thing they can/could do and implies a link to the mind, the _pure_ focus they mention is probably impossible, as it was the Radiance who manipulated the Soul Master and thus the other scholars into taking in the soul of others. This means it's not far fetched to believe it was her who implanted that idea into their heads, especially if they thought it'd give them an immunity to the "plague of mind", because like, if it was her who convinced them into doing it, and they think having a ton of soul would make them immune to the infection, and they were right, it wouldn't have been the best idea to make them use soul in the first place. If anyone is unfamiliar or disagrees with the idea that it was the Radiance's idea that more soul would prevent infection, I can explain why it's likely she did, but it'd take a little while longer is all, so just ask I guess.
      Also when Pure Vessel focuses, it's unclear whether the death spheres it spawns stem from focusing itself or if it's actually using some spell as well as focusing, since it's probably not impossible to do that. Another thing is that although we don't know if PV actually heals or not, I'd say it probably does, since, like, why would the Knight be able to and not Pure Vessel? It's certainly useful to do so. As to why it doesn't heal in-game can really just be chalked up to the fact that there isn't a health bar, and also maybe so something like Old Nail only isn't invalidated or made into actual hell (considering they made bindings a thing, I think it's probable they knew people kept beating the game without upgrades).
      I also just remember how it only does the attack after it loses enough HP, which of course isn't unique for bosses, but indeed it would be a bit wasteful if it focused soul at full HP. Just to clarify, I know you didn't say PV didn't heal, but since I'm covering focusing I still wanted to make it clear that I do think it can. While I'm on this topic, I'll also mention an idea I had that maybe the reason the Knight is able to heal by focusing is because it takes the soul of other beings, and by focusing that stolen soul, it becomes it own, thus healing it, since soul is the thing that animates the bodies of living beings.
      Nailmaster Glory's descriptions says you focus your power to unleash Nail Arts, and the achievement for beating Pantheon 3 is called Focus as well. Keep in mind that the achievements for beating pantheons 1-4 are always in reference to the main god of the Pantheon (even for P5 as well, since you become the god of gods)... I don't know how to fit this into anything.
      The Whispering Roots in the Ancestral Mound mentions something called spiral focus in relation to the Snail Shamans... I also don't know what that means.
      My god, I just realized how long this turned out, it almost scares me.
      Edit: Oh yeah, also, the Knight along with likely all the other Vessels, can focus in the infection, as well as the Dreamers('s essence?) to destroy them. That's kind of a big one.

    • @petruciosxd1374
      @petruciosxd1374 Před 3 lety +5

      About Pure Vessel's whole existence, I do think this is what Pure Vessel looked like in the past, mainly due to this line: "Though its worldly body be bound and defiled, the glory of its pure form endures, [...]" and its description in the Hunter's Journal: "Chosen vessel, raised and trained to prime form."
      I believe the first confirms that's the Hollow Knight from before it got chained up in the Black Egg, because she says that while in the present it's imprisoned and "defiled" (corrupted by infection and is confirmed by the White Lady to have gotten weaker), its pure form _endures,_ meaning that despite its current state, this form _continues_ to exist, as if it did before. PV's description just lightly implies this is the actual form of the chosen Vessel, as it's being attributed to this version, and not THK, whose description only calls it a "fully grown" Vessel. Like, of course they are the same being, the Hollow Knight still was the chosen Vessel, but that distinction makes it seem like "raised and trained to prime form" applies more to Pure Vessel than the Hollow Knight, who is no longer in its prime.
      Now, it's not impossible her focus made Pure Vessel more powerful (though I don't consider it so, I'll explain later on), but I still think that's still how it probably looked like, for a few reasons. Actually, I think I forgot one of them... Uh, anyway, one is that prior to Pantheon 5, no Ascended variants of bosses are present in the pantheons, just dream forms, which may be similar, but the former requires the Godseeker's focus for the bosses to "ascend", and, as far as we know, none of the bosses are strengthened in this manner prior to the 5th pantheon, only Pure Vessel, who would be the sole exception, and of course we can't use itself as evidence that it is. Instead, I think Pure Vessel is just THK's dream form, akin to White Defender's which is a memory, and that it's just the Hollow Knight back when it was "the Pure Vessel", even if it wasn't actually pure. For why she thinks it's pure, yeah, she's probably just wrong, because like, why'd her focus make it hollow? That's kinda weird, I just went with that being a sorta surface level understanding of PV.
      Now this isn't all that related, but have you ever noticed how dream catcher particles are surprisingly uncommon in Godhome arenas? I believe the only ones that have them are the arenas for the Vengefly King, Failed Champion, Hornet Protector, Winged Nosk, White Defender, Sly and both versions of Grimm. Now, some are pretty strange choices (though I did come up with a few explanations as to why), but for Sly I do think the form we see is him back in his prime, when he wasn't as old, at least: "Holding it lets you run around quickly and tirelessly, as though you were young again! Or, erm, so I'm told."
      So I don't think his wings are different because of the Godseeker, but instead just because that's how they used to look, red signifying he's the Great Nailsage in the fight and not just the shopkeeper we meet, possibly since red is the other main color of the Nailmasters. Oh yeah, maybe I should've mentioned it earlier, but from what I've read you don't have to fight any of the dream bosses for them to show up in the pantheons, and possibly the Hall of Gods as well though I haven't tested (exception being you can Dream Nail Grimm's statue just fine after banishing the troupe, even if you never encounter NKG).
      Lastly, in the game's code, Pure Vessel is named "hk_prime". Of course this isn't an in-game source so it should be taken with some grains of salt, after all in the game's code, God Tamer and her beast are still called Lobster Lancer since those were their original names, buut I think it's worth bringing up nonetheless.

      @@petruciosxd1374 Srry for the late reply, been a bit busy and just saw your comment today, I’ll try to answer all your points in order of each paragraph (and I’m glad you enjoyed the video :D) (typed this all in a google doc, so hopefully I separated every paragraph correctly when moving it here, srry if I didn't).
      - You’re right about the Black Egg and King’s Brand doors having seals, but the dreamers’ seals do not activate from soul magic. Just tested all of them in game, dreamers’ only become visible from movement & physical attacks. As for why the Hollow Knight’s seal becomes visible every once in a while, it might be because it is attempting to escape, so every time it attempts movement the seal reacts.
      - The reason why the seals on the Black Egg and Abyss door is b/c they both need a key of some kind to be opened (black egg needs dreamers killed, abyss needs king’s brand). Besides that, no idea.
      - By her silhouette in Godhome, the neck before her hair of roots is a match to her real world counterpart. If you layer both sprites on each other, you’d have to assume that is where the bindings would form. Now it is possible in the silhouette her bindings are glowing with her body, though that’s some pretty unfounded speculation, considering we never see the bindings glow ingame.
      - Yeye I agree here.
      - I’ll be answering this point on the Pale King’s beacon in a future video (not like directly tho, don’t worry I won’t put your comment in a video xD).
      - I agree with this too.
      - I agree here.
      - Even though we have to go off of in game code to determine if this focus attack is THK actually focusing, I’d say the fact THK enters a crouched stance similar to the Knight when it focuses, its most likely THK is just focusing to do this attack, not casting a spell at the same time (still up for debate tho). Though as for if that focus attack heals, I’d think it’d be pretty inconsiderate of Team Cherry to be like “yeah this focus attack heals THK” and at the same time not have his actual character heal. So again, most likely the focus attack does not heal THK.
      - Same reasoning on THK not healing (again, still up for debate), but Soul essence is not special to every bug. Soul is most likely a single essence that can be taken by anyone (Hot springs; Sly commenting on soul totems you hit to get soul out of). Think it’d be a bit too complicated to say a bug’s soul is special to them, and no one else can use it unless converted to their body’s soul. When the Knight focuses soul, it's most likely concentrating the extra soul within its body towards wounds, which is how it heals masks/health (best proof of this is Hot Springs, where when the Knight stands in it, it heals its body automatically, b/c its standing in some form of liquid soul. Making contact with the body, it makes sense it would begin healing every wound the Knight has. This is seen in Quirrel in Deepnest, where he says something around the lines of “this water makes my aching legs feel so much better”).
      - I don’t know how to fit that into anything either, unless you consider the statues you get for beating Pantheon bosses at regular, ascended, and radiant (pretty sure one of those talks about focus).
      - Dunno what a spiraling focus is, but probably has to do with their mastery of magic. Probably the reason why the Soul Scholars captured one of Snail Shaman’s siblings, to study such.
      Most likely the reason why the Knight can focus the infection is because it is similar to Soul. Dunno how or why the Knight gets soul from hitting infected husks, but if the knight can collect infected essence, it makes sense it can focus the infection.
      - “Though its worldly body be bound and defiled” can be counted by how the infection cracked THK’s shell & shade (as seen by the infection coming out of THK’s shade forehead in the Dream no More ending). This sadly doesn’t give solid enough evidence to point towards THK’s cloak color change.
      - As I stated in the video, THK was not pure, that is why it failed to contain the infection. So its possible PV is what a Pure version of THK could be, but we have no way to conclude this is what THK looked like in its assumed pure form.
      - You’re right this is most likely just its dream form, and as I stated in the video, there is the possibility both the Godseeker & the Pale King mistook PV for being pure, and this is what it actually looked like in the real world. But again, no way to definitively prove this sadly. But if we do want to entertain the thought, it is possible PV has this color of cloak b/c the Pale King pumped him with a bunch of soul. But when it entered the black egg, the infection took away this pure soul from THK and replaced it with infected soul. But hey, that’s just a theory, a game th-
      - You're probably right. This would support that PV is not a once existent version of THK, however this gets a big road block with Vengefly King & Winged Nosk. Winged Nosk represents its potential to become a doppelganger of Hornet, not that it had become Hornet in the past (though that is possible). And as for Vengefly King, well, pretty obvious why it having dream particles completely ruins this theory.
      - I said that Sly’s wing coloration was b/c of him being in his best form, though I should have probably mentioned that best form was probably when he was younger. Probably the reason you can face NKG is b/c he’s a dream boss. As for the warrior dreams, I’m pretty sure you’re supposed to face at least some of them to enter certain Pantheons (I know for sure you have to face Markoth to enter Pantheon 4)
      - Ye ur right on that being a consideration, but as you said, it is game code text, so can’t be definitive proof.
      Well that was a fun typing session xD This was a good conversation, again, I’m happy you enjoyed the video :D

    Keep in mind that the vessels contain both void and soul, so the cloaks could be containing or both. This would explain why in all the animation when the knight uses a spell and we can see the front of their body, the cloak is first shoved aside( I think, don't remember if that's true for all of them), it has to do that so that the spell doesn't just get trapped in the cloak and possibly damage themselves. Or I'm just overanalyzing a tiny detail in a game full of actual story I could look at instead.

    Personally, I have a theory regarding the mothwing cloak, crystal heart, and monarch wings, physics, and how that ties into the cloaks. I think the cloak is a set of wings. Hear me out with this. The knight has midair control, which nothing else has except winged enemies. Look at the watcher knights, the bouncy things in queens gardens, the god tamer beast, the collector. Once they leave the ground, their path is set, they cannot change it until they hit the ground again. Hornet’s midair mobility can be explained by use of silk, like how she suspends the spiky things in kingdoms edge. I think the mothwing cloak and monarch wings are learned abilities rather than collected items. If you notice, the cloak conveniently disappears when you use the wings. Also, it explains how the crystal heart can stop midair, even with no discernible counter force. I’m trying to keep it brief, so moral of the story, midair control on the knight’s level isn’t possible without some way of producing force in some way, and I think the cloak is the method of exerting that force

    I think the "hollow knight cloak looking different from pure vessel cloak" part is a perfect example of trying to find a super complex and in depth answer when its probably just as simple as the fact that the pure vessel was the hollow knight at the height of his power, and thus he kept up his image. The actual hollow knight has been sitting in an egg for who knows how long, and has probably been in combat before then given the fact that he appears to be missing an arm, so its highly probable that his cloak is just dirty and unmaintained like the rest of him
