- With two millennia of fascinating history ready to be discovered at every turn, there are few cities in the world quite like York. Shaped over centuries by the Romans, the Vikings, the Normans and more, this centre of Northern England is one of the country's most significant cities, and also one of the most popular with visitors from all over the world, with all of York's main sights easy to discover on foot!
So, join me for a bumper hour-long walk around York's historic city centre on a sunny December afternoon, with the city bustling in the lead-up to Christmas!
On our walk around the city, we pass many of York's most famous landmarks, including Bootham Bar, York Minster, The Belfrey, Low Petergate, Mad Alice Lane, Kings Square, The Shambles, Shambles Market, Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate, The Merchant Adventurers' Hall, St. Denys's Church, Fishergate Postern Tower, Clifford's Tower, Fairfax House, Jorvik Viking Centre, Parliament Street, St. Helen's Church, Mansion House, Ouse Bridge, Micklegate Bar, York City Walls, York Station, Lendal Bridge, York Museum Gardens, The Yorkshire Museum, St. Mary's Abbey and York Art Gallery.
In all that time, we only just scratch the surface of what is undoubtedly one of the world's greatest cities, but I'll do my best to give you an in-depth tour of York.

THIS IS A WONDEFUL TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE FOR ME.
Was born in York (1955), and lived there until migrating to Australia at the age of 25.
Was on York market for years, and used to drive up the Shambles to get to my stall.
Thought nothing of the walls, as kids we were always climbing up them from the outside; we wondered why there was always so many tourists. Really mis the place now.
Thanks for uploading this!

I spent a week there once, and rushed around trying to see all the sights. Very difficult because there's so much to see. There were a couple of day trips later, but I love that city. Thanks for the walk down memory lane. Hope to get back over there some day while I'm still able.
Thank you so much for this. I bought an apartment in low Peters Gate and moving to York soon. Can't wait.

There are not many walks around Northern England on CZcams, at least not like yours, with information on history and culture. So your channel is really a treasure.
That's so kind of you to say! I'm really glad you're enjoying the videos, and I'll continue to tour the North (and the South when I get the chance) finding more of the country's most fascinating places :)

Maybe a walk around Exeter and area sometime?! And Shrewsbury!

I'd love to visit both Exeter and Shrewsbury in the near future, Exeter is a little more out of the way for me but I'm definitely looking forward to visiting the West Country next year when the weather picks up a bit, so do stay tuned for that!
Nice walk in the city of York england I enjoyed it, very historical and beautiful the city of York. Have you ever walked in winchester England? I've been there on vacation. They have a very nice huge cathedral a great place to visit. Can't wait to see more of your walking videos. 😀😀
Thank you so much! I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed the video - York really is a stunning place and its centuries of history are absolutely spectacular :)
I've actually never been to Winchester before - I don't know how though! But thank you very much for recommending it, I'll add Winchester to my list of future destinations :)
Beautiful place and a fantastic tour thank you. We where only there ourselves last weekend, and i flew York Minster which is up on my channel. Thanks for sharing, keep them coming. Del
Wow! York Minster looks amazing from so high up in the air - you can really get a great sense of scale from your impressive drone photography there, thanks for showing me that :)
I hope you had a great time in York last weekend - and thank you very much for watching this video, I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
@@LetsWalkUK Thank you very much for your lovely comment. I've not been flying long, so nice to get good feedback to see I'm improving. Yes it is a totally different perspective from the air. I have always been into photography, but above is alot better. Yes we had a great time thank you, one of our favourite places. I'm glad you liked the video, please feel free to check out my other videos. Keep up the great content. Del 👍
Awsome video❤️ just for curiosity, also curiosity did not kill the cat.
I would love to know where you got your info from.
If you could put refferences to thevlink which you got your info in your description would be fantastic
A lovely presentation of the city where I was born 73 years ago, I actually learned something new 😀 I would like to point a few inaccuracies however. The street you call Low Petergate is actually Stonegate. York Minster is not “one of the largest” cathedrals in Europe, it is the largest north of the Alps. It is also the tallest building in York, a city ordinance forbids any building higher. A good presentation, I give you an A - can’t see my way to giving you A*
Another excellent video done by yourself . York is indeed a fascinating & beautiful city . Never realised there were so many churches though . Very interesting learning all about their history . Getting through all your walks one By one . Kept them up . Hope you do one of my home city of Birmingham one day . Would very much like to see one from there .
There are few cities quite as historic as York! All the churches tell a fascinating story about the city's development though - and it's amazing just how much you can discover on a simple walk around the gorgeous city centre :)
Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you're enjoying the videos, it means a lot to hear! Amazing to think but I've never actually been to Birmingham before - other than the train station - so I look forward to making a video there in the future!
@@LetsWalkUK in 1984 there was a lighting strike that hit the York Minster (full name : Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Saint Peter in York) which started a fire , unlike what happend The Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, were most of the Cathedral had been lost . York Minster was lucky with only losing abit of the church roof and some items inside.
Nice video
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed it - York certainly is a very nice city :)
It would be much better if we listen to a voice telling us the history then reading..
We loose too much of the show while reading..
Best reards and tks, from Brazil 🇧🇷🎄☺
I love these videos, particularly during these Covid times. However, I think they would be greatly enhanced if you did a voiceover, rather than text on the screen, which is distracting and obscures the view. The journeys around the various town /city centres would be much more entertaining and interesting with a voiceover and much more watchable. Anyway, thank you for these videos and keep up the great work.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos - there are so many fascinating places to discover around the country :)
I've had a few comments suggesting narrated walks, and it's something I'm looking to add to the upload roster alongside non-narrated walks, which I know lots of people enjoy too! Thank you very much for your comment, it's always so helpful to hear your thoughts on the videos!
Then don’t watch. Problem solved.
Had no idea that there was so many female NED’s in York.
Staggering really.
😇
What and were is the Building that was discovered 1970's in York UK?
Harrogate??
Harrogate's a beautiful town! You can see my walk around Harrogate right here: czcams.com/video/lhZlGSfC1W0/video.html
Hope you enjoy - and thanks for watching :)
Thanks, will hopefully be visiting a little later in the year and around Pateley Bridge
