  • Range Rover Sport debuted in 2005 as a cheaper alternative to the ever-growing full-size Range Rover. By the end of 2020, one million units had been sold, while the SUV was still in its second generation. In addition to footballers' wives, powerful powertrains, including a 5-liter V8 with a compressor, certainly contributed to the sales success.
    The current third generation also seeks to introduce a bit of green credentials to the Range Rover Sport L461 ahead of the arrival of an all-electric version in 2024. The engine range, depending on the market, includes diesels, diesels with a mild hybrid, petrol engines with a mild hybrid, petrol engines with a plug-in hybrid and the 530-hp 4.4 liter petrol V8 from BMW that powered the big Range Rover I reviewed a few months ago.

      The V8 is from BMW. The straight 6 is JLR's own development. The engines are not the problem. It's the electronics around them.

      JLR produced some press cars for the launch event, and then sent them out across Europe for local press fleet duty. I imagine it was more efficient, than making another batch of press cars, when the clients want their cars NOW :)

    Nice review as usual Marek. Much appreciated.
    I noticed that many (if not all) the German SUVs use run flat tyres, and I'm assuming given that it has a full sized spare the Range Rover still uses normal tyres. Do you feel that it any impact on the ride and handling of the Range Rover?

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  Před rokem

      I'd have to drive them back to back, preferably somewhere on a nasty bit of road. I know there's a huge difference in handling, when it comes to sidewall size, but then again we'd have to look at steering ratio in various cars.
      Long story short: hard to tell :)

    Marek ... You mentioned the BMW as having a better driving experience...? Maybe, but remember in a BMW one is driving just a "Soft Roader", whereas with Range Rovers one has genuine and unparalleld Off Road capabilities.. One may not use them off road, but I like the knowledge that I could, if I ever need to.

    I find it strange that the infotainment screen is positioned so low. I rarely see that on new cars anymore, probably because it's safer to keep that screen higher. That way you don't have to take your eyes that far off the road. Lately the screen is in most cars positioned at the same height as the meterscreen behind the steering wheel.

      @@MarekDrivesENG I am from nearby, CZ 😉 right now I drive 2021 BMW M5 LCI, cool car definitelly with useless amount of power, but with two small kids I’m looking for something more family orientated. New X7 is ugly and X5, Q7 and Q8 as well as Cayenne they all have coming facelift during next year. I wanted to try something different but not at expense od reliability. JLR has bad reputation, but they know and supposedly try to improve, as they say in JLR. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      I never though I'm going to be one of THOSE people, but get the pre-facelift BMW, before they install the new infotainment system.
      Yes, JLR has a terrible reputation. I know a guy who does some quick electronic repairs for them, when the authorised dealer fails (which apparently is more often than we think), and he said he wouldn't touch a JLR product with a 3-meter pole.

    what is the difference between mild and plug-in hybrid? something you mentioned when you talked about the available powertrains for this vehicle

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  Před rokem +4

      OK, so the mild hybrid is a more complex stop and start system, which also gives you a boost in certain situations. Depending on the brand, engine, setup it may also allow coasting with the engine off. But from a driver's perspective it's pretty much a regular petrol or diesel powertrain.
      A plug-in hybrid is (as the name suggest) something you plug-in to charge, and then you can drive a certain distance on electricity only (in this case it's around 100 km I think). Once you're out of juice, the petrol engine will kick in, and then it will behave like a regular hybrid (i.e. not a mild hybrid), where the petrol engine and the electric motor may work together or interchangeably in order to maintain efficiency.
      Arguments in favour of PHEVs are that you can do your daily commute in electric mode. Arguments against PHEVs are that if you don't charge them regularly, you're just carrying a lot of extra weight, and using more fuel, when out of electricity.

Just too unreliable and rattle traps after 100K km.
