    The Jeannot trade is indeed awful. It should always be concerning if your only standout trait is "physicality."
    Brisebois had a decent quote on it that essentially boils down to how draft picks are often overrated and when your team is in "win today" mode, they're generally worthless. Contract erm, team control, and scarcity in player type. Sure, fans want their teams to go for the homerun swing on a guy like Horvat, Tarasenko, or Meier, but those are all guys that could have walked away at the end of the year, whereas Jeannot has at least one more year of control, and most likely will be under contract for at least 3-5 years when he signs his RFA deal. But going to the last part, if you were a team that wasn't looking for a homerun, top of the lineup forward, and were specifically looking for that kind of physical third line winger, there weren't a lot of options out there. I know some people have said they felt like Tampa was bidding against themselves, but I highly doubt that. You only have to look at Toronto following it up with picking up Lafferty from Chicago and they were probably in on the Jeannot talks. And I'm sure other teams were too, which pushed the price up, especially considering the team control part and not being a mere rental.

I understand why the Sharks wanted to get rid of Timo, but dang. DownGoesBrown had a great comment about both the Jeannot trade to TBL and McDabe to TOR in that he felt like that teams were "finally recalibrating how they view middling-but-useful players with cheap contracts. Those guys should have more value than rentals, but it hasn't always seemed that way." With the Lightning constantly having to look for ways to save money and still get useful players, it makes a lot of sense to give up these kind of assets. Even with Jeannot having a down year (with much of Nashville's skaters having a down year), if he was a free agent this summer, he would get more on the market than what he will cost for the Lightning to re-sign him due to being an RFA. It's almost always cheaper to sign an RFA than it is to sign an equivalent UFA. Obviously superstars are an exception, but if you're getting a guy like Jeannot on the UFA market that isn't 35+, you're going to pay more than his next contract with Tampa.
    Also as BriseBois pointed out, these picks they're giving up, the players they would draft wouldn't have an impact on the team in years, if they even would because the odds on draft picks being impact players is so low. He knows that one day things will fall apart. But when you have multiple future Hall of Famers on your roster still playing at a high level, as well as a strong secondary portion of the core that is still fairly young, you should be doing everything you can to win Cups. You don't get back the last great years of Stamkos, Hedman, Kucherov, Point, and Vasilevskiy in 3-5 years when the players taken with those draft picks would be ready to play in the NHL. That's a problem for Future BriseBois to deal with in rebuilding the team when his superstars are past their best years of hockey.

    • @GeoFitz4
      @GeoFitz4 Před rokem

      Also people are really focused on the number of picks, but the reality is that the Lightning didn't have that much draft pick capital, and so they had to go for quantity over quality to get their guy. While the Lightning have had a lot of luck in the later rounds of the draft, the chances of those draft picks even turning into players is still quite low.

      Great points, and the thing is.. with the exception of Stamkos and maybe Hedman, the rest of the core is still going to be good/in their prime in 3-5 years. • @GeoFitz4
      @GeoFitz4 Před rokem

      @@jdm1029 Yes, and I think Kucherov, Hedman, and Vasilevskiy will age well, but typically 29-30 is when players have already started to decline from their peak performance. Kucherov is 29, Hedman is 32, Stamkos is 33, Vasilevskiy is 28. Outside of Point, you can say the other four are past their peaks and it's only downhill from here. They're still playing at a high level, and should for another few years, but that performance is going to continue to decline.
      The secondary core is younger with Point at 26, Cirelli 25, Hagel 24, Sergachev 24, and Cernak 25. But outside of Point and Sergachev, that group lacks the same kind of superstar power. They're good quality players and the kind of players you need in your core to be a championship team, but even at their peak, they are not as good as the others at their peak.

    Tampa can easily get those 3rd, 4th & 5th picks back, especially with all those good players they have. The 1st will almost definitely be a late rounder (but hey its still a first!) & same deal with the 2nd. IMO i dont think Cal foote would have panned out for tampa with all the players infront of him on the depth chart. However i do believe he will be good on the preds, & they are great at developing defence. Tampa will likely not have to rebuild for a solid 5-10 years, they dont need those picks right now. IMO its not much of an overpay as everyone is making it out to be, especially if they are able to resign him. And with tampas luck Jeannot will become a 30 goal scorer, they are good at making top 9 players excel ( Hagel, Nick Paul, Blake Coleman, perry ect..) Jeannot is coming off a 20 goal rookie season and took a step back this season on a not so good Nashville team.

    Lightning & Panthers have such a huge advantage in free agency with Florida having no income tax that they should always be trading picks for players and stocking their teams thru free agency instead of the draft taking advantage of their massive free agency advantage.

    Love the crowd defending this, especially those that are saying that most of those picks will not make the NHL.
    They just traded for a guy that was not drafted and made the league still. You know what the odds are on players never drafted making the league? A lot lower than the non first round draft picks involved in the deal.
    It might work out for Tampa in the end but it doesn’t make the trade a good one from their perspective. They severely overpaid for a third line, at best, player.

    I'm surprised no mention of JBB paying higher for players over the years, to bring in the talent, with hopes to keep them, and put on these deep runs. So far he's gotten the job done as the TBL have been a thorn in the side of many teams. However, I think the East is a bloodbath and this trade, while good in the long term, probably won't help much this season.

The cup will be won by any of the top 6 teams in the east.
